... Wait, why do we have this thread when there is a main thread for this already?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

As for Bardock armor, I think one month is plenty of time to change to his signature armor, since the previous one was damaged and maybe there wasn't new models, just the old-fashioned ones like Gine's.

I don't understand how Bardock could know Freeza was going to kill them without the psychic premenitions. Wouldn't it void out the hope he has for Kakarot if he doesnt see him in his future childhood? And why would Bardock want to send him to another planet for the sake of safety? Doesn't it go against the laws of their organization?

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

I found another plothole: Goku doesn't recognize Raditz's Saiyan armor when they meet even though he used to wear the exact same type of armor.

No it's not? Valley. Head injury. Amnesia. Gohan obviously didn't tell him anything about before the fall, because Goku didn't know about anything from before the fall. So long as he's stopped wearing it by the time he whacks his head, there is no issue.

Yes there is an issue. He stopped wearing it but he should still have seen it in Gohan's house (it's not like Gohan's house is huge and full of unexplored rooms).

That requires you to assume Gohan kept the battle jacket, when nothing says that he did. It's not like the old guy just stayed in that house every single day. We know for a fact that he at least went to visit Roshi once. He could have just as easily thrown it out during a trip or perhaps put it back in Goku's ship in order to prevent Goku's memory from being jogged now that he's finally docile. Heck, maybe that far back in the manga continuity, the old school battle jackets don't stretch and it shredded upon Goku's first transformation into an Oozaru that had Gohan warning the boy about looking at the moon.

Or even if it didn't get completely shredded just from the Oozaru transformation, it could've been damaged by Gohan himself trying to stop the rampaging giant monkey. He probably hadn't been strong enough to kill Gohan yet (even with that 10x boost) the first time, since Gohan was present for the transformation and lived through it... so maybe that armor got Kamehameha'd away or something.

Why must everything be a plot hole? I don't see anything wrong with what this series brings up as fact. A lot of things we have assumed as fact for years have been due to anime filler, which, as usual, is proven to be unreliable and against the creator's vision. If anything, DBM clears up plot holes, such as infants having to fend for themselves or Goku losing memory when memory would have been irrelevant to a few-month old baby. Akira Toriyama seems to keep demonstrating that his memory isn't something horrendous that some fans keep insisting upon.

I reread DB Minus just now and the way Bardock and Gine talk about Goku and the Earth makes these plot holes look even bigger.

Bardock decided to send Goku to Earth because the Earth has a lot of food but no value and isn't likely to be noticed (and invaded) by Freeza. Gine seems to dislike the idea of sending Goku to another planet, any planet. Now keep in mind that Goku is already a 3 year old in DB Minus and it's almost time for him to be sent somewhere on a mission like all saiyan children are. Gine even admits that it's almost time to take Goku out of the incubator. But Gine says that if Bardock is wrong (i.e. if Freeza doesn't kill them all) they will come to Earth to find Goku and bring him back home.

See the problem with this story?

The Earth wasn't even on Freeza's hit-list, it's a planet that has no value. So wtf is Raditz talking about when he meets Goku and why was Raditz so angry that Goku "failed his mission" if the Earth is so worthless? I don't believe that Raditz lied to Goku. Raditz says something like "Kakarotto has failed us" in the manga and in the anime as soon as he lands on Earth and sees that the Earthlings are still alive. Was Raditz lying to himself then?

Even worse, DB Minus implies that Goku was supposed to be sent on an official mission not to Earth but to some other planet if only Freeza didn't genocide the saiyans that month/year/etc... which really screws up the beginning of DBZ for obvious reasons. Kid Goku would not be allowed to live peacefully on Planet Vegeta after being released from his incubator, and we have no evidence that Goku's childhood would have been any different from other saiyan children if he wasn't sent to Earth.

Of course some fans will say that Bardock and Gine lied to Raditz about Goku's "mission" to Earth but this makes no sense at all if you think about it. The saiyans are just soldiers in Freeza's army. Freeza is their boss. The saiyans don't get to decide which planets to conquer, Freeza makes that decision. Raditz should have known that something is wrong the moment he found out that Goku was sent to Earth on a "mission" that was never authorized by Freeza.
Darkprince410 wrote:How would Raditz know that it wasn't an authorized mission? If both his parents told him that his baby brother had been sent off on a mission, what reason would he have to question it? Besides, he was already learning to defy Freeza by then, as he and Vegeta were actively defying orders when Vegeta said they should just ignore the order to return to planet Vegeta. So he's already reaching the point of not caring about Freeza, and thus wouldn't likely look any further into anything regarding his brother and any mission he was on.
This is another plot hole. How could Bardock and Gine tell Raditz anything? They can't talk to him through the scouters because Freeza's men might hear them, and they couldn't leave Planet Vegeta to go talk to Raditz in person because they would have been caught. Bardock tells Gine that it's impossible for them to escape because "we will be detected by the scouters". And of course we know that Raditz never returned home. I can only think of one explanation how Raditz eventually found Goku. There must be a camera and a microphone in every spaceship for videoconferencing.

I'm not sure I understand your other point. Kid Raditz and kid Vegeta were defying Freeza's orders in DB Minus but so what? That's not how Freeza's organization works. Freeza is a tyrannical boss who would never allow the saiyans or anyone else in his army to decide on their own which planets to conquer. Bardock and Gine had no right to send Goku anywhere without Freeza's permission... and Raditz should understand this by the time he meets Goku on Earth. Raditz wasn't a naive, rebellious kid when he finally met Goku on Earth, he was an adult (and a coward who was clearly afraid of dying). And Raditz knows that everything he says is being monitored and recorded through their scouters. We also know that in the original manga Vegeta got in trouble for going to Earth without Freeza's permission.

Changing the reason why Goku was sent to Earth created a massive, continuity breaking plot hole in DBZ. The fact that 2 years later Akira Toriyama still can't (or won't) explain why Raditz said what he said when he met Goku on Earth proves to me that Toriyama himself realizes that he totally screwed up the story with DB Minus. Back when DB Minus was published I was hoping that maybe these plot holes would be fixed in an anime adaptation but that's looking less and less likely at this point.

For starters, this is a topic that's nearly 2 years old. It's a general rule not to bump topics that old.
But Gine says that if Bardock is wrong (i.e. if Freeza doesn't kill them all) they will come to Earth to find Goku and bring him back home.
For starters, him being in an incubator for three years doesn't automatically mean that he's 3 years old, but that's beside the point on the matter.
