Will the Ocean Dub ever see a DVD release?

Post by Acid_Reign » Sat Feb 03, 2007 10:01 pm

Or is there no hope for them? I'm unclear as to why it hasn't happened already. Are the episodes available to anyone?

Let me know if this has been answered already.

We were discussing the possibility of a UK DVD release of DBZ not long ago. That's not exactly the same as your question, but it's similar:

He's not referring to the original dub of seasons 1 and 2, he's talking about the Ocean dub of seasons 4+ that aired in the UK and Canada.

Here Acid, if you really want it bad enough, the Saiyan saga and the Namek saga. Though with as expensive as those are, it pays off to have all the episodes on tape thanks to Cartoon Network. I'm certainly glad I had my VCR ready a few years back. *tap-dances* :D

Ah yeah, I seem to remember those. But they are edited, and nothing beyond that has been released, correct?

Hehe, and I'm glad I taped every episode of DBZ Ultimate Uncut that aired on CN*joins in tap dancing*

I really want to see the Ocean Dub. I really want to hear the English "DAN DAN".

Nothing dubbed by Ocean beyond the Saiyan and Namek sagas is available on legit DVD. And obviously they're edited, but personally, it doesn't ruin the experience for me. Ocean dub DBZ is its own entertaining version of the anime for many reasons. Stellar voice direction (exceptions being Freeza and arguable Kuririn), writing that can just make you crack laughing or giggle because it's so non-DBZ, the infamous digital paint edits and creative alterations, and not to mention its nostalgic value. One more thing, it actually seems more close to the manga in the aspect of so much removed filler, one overlooked plus IMO, and this's coming from an anime purist.

I grew up with all ocean dubs. I liked them.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

Didn't they change all of the voices after the Saiyan and Namek Sagas? :?

Are there any, uh...*cough* "non-legit" DVDs out there, by any chance? (Just curious.)

From what I understand: some, but not all.

After the Saiyan/Namek sagas, the UK and Canada got the FUNi edit-version dub. This would continue up until the episode where Trunks reveals the future warnings to Goku. Then with the UK, it was decided to have the Ocean group all reprise their roles over FUNi's edit-version video track with a virtually identical script (only altered in small dialogue areas to not sound dumbed down) in order to save costs for rights to air the FUNi version. Canada would continue to have the FUNi dub, not getting the new Ocean work until the start of the Cell Games, when by this point, Peter Kelamis had been replaced by the guy whom voices Miroku on Inuyasha (and to be blunt, I can do battle cries better than this guy) and preteen Gohan got a new voice. Canada and the UK had the rest of DBZ in this very differently directed audio, up until the start of GT and original DB (with the first 13 episodes redubbed by them) due to a low budget in affording the Ocean group; bringing in the very inferior Blue Water studio.

Did I just sum it up well? >.>

So, they basically have four dub casts of DBZ? :?

Saiyan-Namek Sagas - Ocean Cast
Ginyu-Trunks - FUNi edited
Trunks-Cell - Old Ocean Cast
Cell and up - New Ocean Cast

Something like that? (yes, you need to dumb it down for me >.>)

Well, with Cell-Kid Buu, it wasn't a new cast like the Blue Water dubs of GT and original DB, basically just with a few replacements. Goku, Bulma, preteen Gohan, and a couple other minor characters got new VAs. However, most of the important ones were retained, such as Scott Mcneil as Piccolo and Brian Drummond as Vegeta (and eventually as Vegetto). So...think of it as the Evangelion movies.

But yeah, you could imagine how confused dub-only fans in Canada and the UK would be with all the inconsistencies. And then bring along Budokai 1.

That's awesome that Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond stayed. They're what made the Ocean dub perfect 8)

And the miracle of Youtube now allows us non-Canadians to experience Brian Drummond's Final Flash! (I also see Krillin is the same still too ^_^)

So Conan, do you know exactly what episode they start the Ocean cast again? (after the Freeza Saga that is)

EDIT: Another reason why Brian Drummond kicks all ass.

I can probably trade my ocean dvds for the dragonboxes in the distant future.

In the UK, it was "episode 106" (in actuality, episode 121): "Welcome back, Goku". An interesting note is that since "Instant transmission" was never referenced before this episode, the Ocean group decided to rewrite it as "Instant Translocation". Canada would still have the FUNi version up until the Cell Games, whereas I mentioned, some of the VAs had been replaced.

After seeing that, I have to say I don't like Trunks in that version, or #16. And I prefer Sonny Strait's Krillin and Chris Sabat's iteration of the line.

See the clip I put in in the edit, Chris Sabat doesn't even compare.

And yes, Sonny Strait and Eric Vale > the Ocean guys of Krillin and Trunks.
