Interestingly enough, I was thinking of creating my own "perfect set," which is a bit similar to what some of you have posted here. I'm currently in the process of gathering all of the necessary equipment/sources, but here is what I'm doing:

If I did that, half of what I mentioned wouldn't even fit on the disc unless it underwent massive compression. I chose Blu-Ray (which not even I have yet) because of the glorious space that it has.JAPPO wrote:Make it DVD, man. I don't have (nor want) blu-ray anytime soon.
And though I'd love to distribute them all when I'm done, I'm not sure how legal it'd be for me to do so...
No, the new recordable format is called BD-RE. I'd be write-once, rest assured.godofchaos wrote:Here Here Jappo!, nice to see you and me on the same page.JAPPO wrote:Make it DVD, man. I don't have (nor want) blu-ray anytime soon.
and also, acid
Format: Blu-Ray (Recordable) ???
So you wanna be able to record OVER the disk you bought?

Are you familiar with the bitrate limitations of MPEG-2 video streams? And should I even reply to that second part about equipment? Some of us do work for a living and as a result can actually purchase things (though personally I won't be buying a Blu-Ray player until later this year, and my current television only does 1080i so I'll just have it output in 720p).JAPPO wrote:First of all, DVD can go over 8 GB. If worst comes to worst, just package it on seperate DVDs.
Second of all, DBZ on blu-ray will not look as good as you think without equipment you do not have, and probably will never afford.

My ideal booklet/insert wouldn't have goofy shit on it like a bogus timeline. It would have the original japanese episode titles / direct english translations / and FUNi episode titles, then a brief synopsis for each episode. Screenshots would be appropriate for the insert and if FUNi could manage some good looking boxart (they should pay SelMod) that has a consistent format from set to set, I would be pleased. They've already figured out the boxart for their DB sets..
I really don't understand how FUNi can't get the japanese audio for the episode previews (or have they figured that out?..) but that really needs to be in there for each episode
Everything I'd like to see with video/audio has already been said

Additionally, the prices on these things are expected to drop. Like most electronics, chances are pretty good that they'll become more and more commonplace over the next few years.
Also, that 8.5 GB you see printed on the standard DL discs is the capacity in SI notation, though. When that translates to binary it actually comes out to about 7.95.

What's there to be said about a perfect set? Either the DBox masters or something done to similar quality and cleanup, no widescreen, and then pretty much everything the FUNi set has now, plus maybe a couple more extra's here and there.
I think everyone would agree on something to that extent as being the optimum desire whilst economical and realistic.

Footage: Dragon Box masters, in the intended aspect ratio of course.
Audio: Japanese mono, English 5.1 with Japanese Music and redone audio for the recap and next episode segments, perferably whoever did them for the Dragon Ball dub, and the Spanish Dub in either Stereo or Mono, whichever it appeared in on the UUEs.
Subtitles: Steve Simmons' Japanese Translation, Subtitles for the dub, and mabey Spanish subtitles, but it's suposedly a great dub so the dialouge is probably pretty close to the Japanese script.
Special Features: Commentary on select episodes by the English Cast and Crew, History of DBZ in English feature talking about the history of the show in America, covering changes in casting, censorship, changing the music, and other things, and any trailers used to promote the Box set.
Episodes per Disc: 5-6.
Price: 40-50 USD.

Apparently, the voiceovers belonged to Fuji TV and Toei didn't have them to give to FUNimation the first time around.dasmith wrote:I really don't understand how FUNi can't get the japanese audio for the episode previews (or have they figured that out?..) but that really needs to be in there for each episode
However, since they're plainly there on the DragonBoxes, it stands to reason that Toei negotiated with Fuji TV to get those tapes and would have them to give to those who license the series.
I suppose the real test would be to ask if the Spanish remasters, based on the DragonBox footage, have the previews with Japanese voiceovers. If they do, then FUNimation really has no excuse.

I think the reason topic creator said "don't say dragonbox" is because realistically speaking it's not exactly the most viable perfect set (released in limited quantities, expensive, in japanese).
I mean, Dragonbox masters, subtitled, at a low price, translated extras, that's pretty much but I'd want, but I wouldn't even spend a couple hundred on a Japanese Dragonbox as watching something in a language I can't understand unsubbed doesn't interest me in the slightest.

The singles are a little less expensive than FUNimation's previous singles, so price can't be argued and neither can availability (the big, fuck-off boxes were limited but the singles won't be). The only real detractor for English speaking consumers would be the language barrier. Otherwise, the DragonBox discs are pretty damned close to perfection.Undercooked Sausage wrote:I think the reason topic creator said "don't say dragonbox" is because realistically speaking it's not exactly the most viable perfect set (released in limited quantities, expensive, in japanese).
