Yes, the final part of the saga of Freeza has some flaws (Krilin could have been far more incisive with its Kiezan in much scenes -and then some people come to say that the characters are "stupid" only in the Cell's arc ,and I say this because Krilin is my third favorite character), but the battle with Goku and Freeza, especially towards the end, compensates all enormously. And i think that Freeza it's also most amazing and successful villain in the series (aside RoF): is much like saga sayan's Vegeta, but with a simple and effective design, and a much more varied arsenal of techniques.

Absolutely love this series. Opened me up to so many new aspects to the series and rekindled my love for the franchise. I think I get some extra enjoyment since his opinion generally lines up with mine. It's a shame he doesn't have more subscribers.

No problem! It's been an absolute pleasure and I listen to your videos in the car quite often. If you don't mind, I kind of want to pick your brain on something. I remember leaving a YouTube comment about how Goku commenting on the fact that even common trash could surpass an elite rang hollow because the Saiyans themselves were elite and how it was frustrating to watch the other characters fall behind due to being born the wrong species. Do these sorts of things where what we see later on cheapens what the characters say or the general message in earlier parts of the story diminish those stories to you, or do you find it easy to compartmentalize it a bit and take those stories how they were written and ignore some of the contradictory stuff you know comes later on while you experience it? Do you mostly begrudge the later stuff for contradicting it? Sorry if that was a bit hard to follow, was trying to figure out how to word this.

Ooh, that was you? I kept that comment in my inbox for a very long time because I thought it was an excellent point and wanted to make sure I didn't forget it in the future. But, yes, I agree, to a point, at least. Obviously the story has always focused on Goku, and so that lesson was demonstrated more through him than anybody else, even before he was an alien. And to a certain extent, I'm okay with him being the personification of that lesson. But it is extraordinarily obnoxious that a series that gives the message of always continuing to push yourself has so many characters who have to shrug and say, "Well, it doesn't matter what I do. I'll never be good enough because I didn't win the genetic lottery."

Yup, that was me! Also, I was a bit curious about how much the art plays into your rating of these arcs. Is your rating based on just the plot or do you weigh the presentation into the ranking? If so, how much does it impact your score? I've heard you talk about art, but aside from just some short opinions on it, I never got an impression of how much it weighed on your ranking system.

I guess I have to admit it really doesn't, at least not nearly as much as character and story. I don't think it's a secret to say that I find such aspects more important than the art, but it's also fair to say that I feel in a much better position to talk authoritatively about the story and characters than the art. That's not to say I have no interest in it at all, but you are correct in assuming it's not the focus. A well-told story with so-so Toriyama art would most definitely score higher with me than great art with a so-so story. But if all other things were equal, the art would certainly tip the scales. Honestly, if memory serves, I recall JulieYBM mentioning in this very thread after I'd finished the first two arcs that I really didn't talk about the art at all. I realized he was right, and since then I've at least made an effort to bring it up when I can. I do think I'm going to have some design-related talk in the Freeza arc, though.

It's not quite Dragon Ball Dissection, but Derek Padula was kind enough to talk with me about his book series, Dragon Ball Culture!

Great interview, I got familiar with him when I read Kunzait_83's Wuxia Dragon Ball post. Didn't know about these books, I already bought one and I'll be flipping through that.

I've been on the fence for awhile now, but thanks to this interview, I think I'll buy one of Derek's books.

Meant to say this since I first watched the video, but I guess here would be the better place to see it. In your Saiyan Arc Part 3 video, you found it weird that Piccolo would think Gohan has been raised pampered and soft, even though he is just 4 years old. But, try watching it from Piccolo's perspective. At 3 years old he surpassed every martial artist on the planet and all of Earth's deities, the only one able to stand in his way being Goku. Of course from his point of view Gohan is weak, since at his own age Piccolo was doing stuff no one (except Goku himself) were able to accomplish. And then seeing how much potential the kid has, of course he is disappointed in his upbringing.
Check out the videos below, made by yours truly!

I don't think I ever expected "stuffed in her vag" to come out of your mouth. That caught me totally off guard and had me in hysterics.

As always, an interesting breakdown. I wonder how the fandom would react if the "training within each other's minds" thing would pop up again. I predict outrage.
