Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Toriyama is good, but there are way better manga artist out there. Go Nagai, Leiji Matsumoto and Shotaro Ishinomori are way better in my opinion. Too bad they didn't make it on the list, but I guess they are too obscure for Watchmojo.

I'd argue Mato (first 8 volumes of Pokémon Special/Adventures) is better. Toriyama is good and I adore his style but best ? Naw.

Not surprised. Toriyama single-handedly inspired an entire generation of shonen manga artists.

Going by art alone? I gotta agree with that. Toriyama is by far my favorite, art style wise.

They also include how prolific they´re and their influence in the world of anime and manga.Dbzfan94 wrote:Going by art alone? I gotta agree with that. Toriyama is by far my favorite, art style wise.

Re: WatchMojo.com choses Akira Toriyama as Nº1 manga artist
This is more like a list of popular artists, not best. They can all draw but even though I have learned a lot from Toriyama-san's style, I think Ken Akamatsu and Masakazu Katsura are better artists and draw way more beautiful. That is not to be totally generalized as I think at times Toriyama-san is also to be included on rank 1 but still.

Which is why Toriyama should be without a doubt No.1.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:They also include how prolific they´re and their influence in the world of anime and manga.Dbzfan94 wrote:Going by art alone? I gotta agree with that. Toriyama is by far my favorite, art style wise.

WatchMojo is a popularity contest with videos. They have no good taste in anything since it's all done by user votes.Cetra wrote:This is more like a list of popular artists, not best.

Yeah, he's no 1 influental "menga" artist.Lord Beerus wrote:Which is why Toriyama should be without a doubt No.1.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:They also include how prolific they´re and their influence in the world of anime and manga.Dbzfan94 wrote:Going by art alone? Re: WatchMojo.com choses Akira Toriyama as Nº1 manga artist
He is extremely influential but I personally prefer other artists like Hirohiko Araki. Though in terms of influence he is hands down No. 1.

I'm surprised they even knew who Urasawa was. That's my #1 for sure.

If we're basing this on how prolific and influential they are, even Toriyama loses out to "the godfather of manga".Lord Beerus wrote:Which is why Toriyama should be without a doubt No.1.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:They also include how prolific they´re and their influence in the world of anime and manga.Dbzfan94 wrote:Going by art alone? Reeks of pandering. I don't give WatchMojo the time of day tbh.
Re: WatchMojo.com choses Akira Toriyama as Nº1 manga artist
Without Toriyama almost 80% of the shounen stuff we see today wouldn't have been even been thought of. He deserves the number one spot.

Having just re-read Eyeshield 21 I can safely say that Murata Yuusuke is definitely the best comic artist on this planet...ignoring all of the artists I've never read the work of!
Murata's layouts, camera work and line work is impeccable, easily speaking volumes without ever having to write a word.

However, only one of the two has a manga that archived worldwide mainstream popularity, it helps Dragon Ball is the third most sold manga(as of April 2016).metamoss wrote: If we're basing this on how prolific and influential they are, even Toriyama loses out to "the godfather of manga".

I disagree. If you want to argue popularity, One Piece is still #1. In terms of manga influence alone, it could be argued that Tetsuo Hara, the mangaka of Fist of the North Star is most influential, as his style was how Hirohiko Araki started JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which in turn, arguably paved the way for the non-tournament arc shounen. And in terms of overall legacy, Tezuka takes the cake.Bansho64 wrote:Without Toriyama almost 80% of the shounen stuff we see today wouldn't have been even been thought of. It's hard to deny Toriyama's legacy, but it's not the one-and-all.

Re: WatchMojo.com choses Akira Toriyama as Nº1 manga artist
Yeah other manga artist are just as important as him. Go Nagai and Shotaro Ishinomori have a major impact on Japanese pop culture in the 1970's. Shotaro Ishinomori created Kamen Rider, Cyborg 009, Super Sentai and Android Kikaider which became major popular titles in Japan and Super Sentai would later be adapted over seas as Power Rangers. Go Nagai created Cutie Honey, Devilman, Mazinger Z, Violence Jack and Getter Robo which inspire many anime and manga series and tropes today. Without Mazinger, there would be no Gundam. Without Devilman, there would be no Berserk, The Guyver, Bastard!!, Urotsukidoji, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Neon Genesis Evagelion.Bansho64 wrote:Without Toriyama almost 80% of the shounen stuff we see today wouldn't have been even been thought of.
