Super Saiyan junk
Perhaps Goku was using his fight with Vegeta as a refernce point. I remember Vegeta saying something about having seen a technique like the Kaio-Ken before and Vegeta started to try and counter the move. Maybe Goku beleived Freeza to know how to counter the move more efficently so he hid the ability. Maybe Kaio simply could see through Goku's plan...its a little far fetched but I just took it off the top of my mind.
What can be seductive about the eternal nothing is that the finest day is indifferently this one or any other like it.

I think it was just a suspense building thing. I mean, we see no red aura, we hear no cries of "Kaio-ken!", we assume Goku's not using it. Then, bam, like bomb we find out that yes, Goku's getting his butt kicked while using the Kaio-ken to it's max. It's like... oh man, now what? How do you beat something that strong?

<Kaboom> I'm just glad that he now sounds more like Invader Zim than Rita Repulsa
<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.
