Live ratings represent how many people watched it live. DVR ratings, on the other hand, represent how many people recorded the show to watch it later. They're both important in determining the audience of a television program (in our case, Super).

Live ratings are calculated by Video Research Ltd. using survey sampling (I believe it's 600 households in Kantō region) to gather information on what these people are watching. Then, they register this information and publish the results (which consist on the percentage of households watching that show during the time it was being aired). I don't know how DVR ratings are calculated, but I believe the results are shown in a different way: instead of showing how well a show did during its airing, the DVR rating publish a "comparison" of television programs in a specific category (Anime, sports, news, etc.), where the first place scores 100.0 and the others get a score proportional to that. So, let's say Yokai Watch had the best audience in a certain week, and Super had 15% less audience then YW. In that case, YW would score 100.0, whereas DBS would score 85.0.

I'm not entirely sure about this, so if anyone finds a mistake, feel free to point it out.

Yeah, the DVR ratings are a comparison. In the end, they don't seem to be as important or accurate as the actual tv ratings in Japan, where news sources rarely care about it enough to mention DVR figures.
So if a show has a low viewership, i guess getting a good DVR score doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

But for series like DBS, OP and Conan, that rank every week in both top 10, it's a sign there's really a lot of people watching, to say the least.

Lol the Japanese audience doesn't make any sense to at all. This is the episode that was supposed to gather attention from the hyped up episode last make. Doesn't make any sense man.

Japanese audience doesn´t have the same priorities as you do, and why should it be LoL for that?
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

I bet worldwide there's probably several million people watching these episodes each week.
I guess 2 million. Kids, parents and the hardcore older fans are still watching the show. It has been in the top 10 for almost a year now.

Total population of Kanto region is 42.6 million, so if average live rating of Super is 6.0%, then it means 2.556 million people watch the show on average.

Ratings shares are based on household with TVs -- not a certainty in this day and age. And excludes DVR or online streams of the show.

Also, the show is broadcast in other regions of japan at different times and schedules.

DVR ratings are actually pretty solid, mad respect for the long runners to be lasting so long and still be top 5

-Episode 39 DVR rating-
With Vegeta vs Cabba episode ranking 3th place, I was expecting the final battle Goku Vs HIt to rank first with episode 39.
Especially when the title teased "Goku's new technique." That line alone should hype any fan.

It's true that the live ratings were greater that week but this rating is still disappointing. It even got lower. :?
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

That's not how it works. Even though Kantō region has a population of 42.6 million, not all of them are watching TV during Super's airing time. It's actually way less than that. But Super could probably reach those numbers considering Japan as a whole, not only Kantō.

Re: Cabba

Maybe they're anxious for Cabba's still-unknown back-story to be revealed like I am?

I'm hoping this weekend's episode will be the start of that reveal.
On hiatus.

DVR Ratings, top 10: April 18th - April 24th (DBS episode 40).

1st - One Piece - 100.0
2nd - Yokai Watch - 94.7
3rd - Doraemon - 94.2
4th - Detective Conan - 74.9
5th - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE: 0096 - 70.6 (Up 1)
6th - Dragon Ball Super - 67.3 (Up 1)
7th - Assassination Classroom - 61.4 (Down 2)
8th - Sakamoto Desu Ga? - 60.7
9th - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - 55.9 (Up 1)
10th - Boku no Hero Academia - 51.1 (Up at least 1)

Mostly the same from last week, but DBS and Gundam go up, AssClass drops, Academia joins the ranks while Kabaneri drops out. That one doesn't seem to be doing so good as Noitamina's last show (Erased).
It's interesting that Gundam is ranking so well among a presumably older audience here, since it's just a tv airing of an ova.

Yikes. But I kinda expected a rating like this since the tournament ended.
