Funi's poor job of trying to hide the naughty antics in DB

Post by DBZfan2015 » Mon May 02, 2016 5:54 pm

For those who saw the US Dragon ball anime first, were you aware of the heavy censorship? I felt they did a poor job at it. There were things that didn't fly over my head. When I watched the US dub of Dragon ball back in the early 2000s, I knew Roshi and Oolong were perverted. It was pretty obvious when you look at their facial expressions lol. I knew Oolong didn't sneak into Bulma's room for the dragon balls.

There's an episode where Roshi shrinks himself just to watch Bulma use the bathroom. As a kid watching this on Cartoon Network, I knew what he was up to.

To be fair they didn't really try to "hide" anything, they just toned down the dialogue a bit. Roshi and Oolong still do the same things in the dub, and in the uncut version all the panty shots/boob scenes are still there.

I think my two absolute favorite moments of the censorship from early on were both in the same episode, the second one with Oolong (so...the Yamcha one, I guess?). The dollar bills replacing Bulma's panties on the fishing line were just kind of odd looking from what I recall of them, but nothing - nothing - was more hilarious to me than Goku's digitally added underwear.

Image

Looking at them there they might not look so bad, but actually in motion...I swear they moved unnaturally. Like, on their own, not in accordance to Goku's own movements. I also swear that their unnatural, on-their-own-oh-dear-Kami-they're-possessed movements were towards Bulma. So...that's kinda...worse...than him just being naked. I've never been entirely sure if it's all in my head, an honest mistake, or if someone at FUNi's edit department went 'if we're gonna have to edit this in the first place, let's actually make it worse if they happen to notice'.

(To their credit though...FUNi did actually put the hook through the bills, whereas in the original Bulma's panties kinda look like they're just laying on the hook rather than the hook being through them. Seems like they'd just float off in the water without the hook through them, so...points for thinking about that? I guess?)

That half assessed censorship still kills me to this day. Like when are Goku or Bulma going to start carrying around wads to cash to nonchalantly use as fish bait?

It did lead to the scene of Goku going "A fish full of dollars." (Oh come on, they've done worse puns)

Well, to be fair I guess, Bulma is from the richest family in the world. Not that that's a thing at that point in the story, but still.

I don't think I was aware of it, or that they even did a particularly poor job(for the most part). It's just annoying how toned down everything is, now, with the knowledge I have. If you showed those episodes to somebody who had no concept of the original version, I'd say you'd have a 50/50 shot of them realizing shenanigans were had.

In the long run, I think it does a huge disservice to the series. It's probably secondary to the hardcore WWE-esque atmosphere they built for Z. Just peeking around online every now and again, and you'll find people who are surprised to learn just how overtly sexual DB was at the start, and you get a sense of how squeamish people are.

Oh yeah, definitely. It's for that reason that while I find the edits amusing, albeit annoying back in the day, that I can't really blame them either. It's amazing how squeamish the US in general still is towards even the remotest hints of sexuality and/or nudity. Most of what's in Dragon Ball is actually...well, fairly tame, when you break it down. There's really only like one or two parts that are actually truly problematic for any but the most stiff of viewers.

Cartoon Network would not air those episodes if they were not edited. Besides I don't see why it matters since the DVDs even in the english dub are uncut and don't have these edits. There's literally no way to watch these old TV versions anymore unless you track down old edited VHS tapes from the early 2000's.

I wasn't referring to visual paint edits; I was talking about the dub script. If it's an overt sexual remark, such as "let me push my face in your breasts" it's changed or altered.
