Dragonball Evolution wrtiter apologizes to fans

Post by Dragon Ball Ireland » Tue May 03, 2016 5:02 pm

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I'm personally very happy with it, because as bad as Dragonball Evolution was I can forgive Ramsey for taking responsibility, acknowledging how and why the fans were so disappointed, and giving credit to a fan film (Light of Hope) which was much better handled and faithful to the series.

It's been so many years, that it really isn't a problem anymore. It was a terrible movie, but it was completely inconsequential. On the positive side it seems to have actually revitalized Dragon Ball from how despicable it was. So mission accomplished....kinda....
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

It seems kind of unnecessary to me, at least at this point in time. Sure, Evolution was a lousy film, but it was released 7 years ago, and fans have more or less forgotten about it. We've been receiving plenty of new Dragon Ball related content since then, so it's not like the movie left some kind of longstanding smear on the franchise.

Still, it's nice that the guy's willing to take the blame for it.

Tsk, that clown who wrote a comment on the same page "it takes a huge amount of courage to admit you were wrong". Wrong with what? The man wrote a movie and people did not like it because it was not reflecting the original enough for them. I personally have the movie and I am fine with it. Sure, I also thing Dragon Ball Light of Hope is better but I have yet to see an actual Dragon Ball movie that I think of as really good.

I think we all owe him a thank you in a way just because if it wasn't for Evolution I'm about sure Toriyama wouldn't have been inspired to make new material. I don't really care for the movie but it's not like I hate the guy. A lot of people act like they'd rather die than to except the truth that such a movie is out there on dvd. It really doesn't bother me, every franchise has it's bad apple in one form or another.

people did not like it because it was not reflecting the original enough for them.
People didn't like it because it was a lousy movie.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Yeah, it's definitely not that big a deal. The guy's perspective has obviously been warped by all the hate he's received if he thinks a George Wallace-style apology is needed, making a bad movie is pretty harmless.

I don't know what you want me to say, but having seen it and been around the community during the time of its release, I can tell you that the reason it's hated doesn't ultimately come down to not being close enough to the source material. It's a lousy film, plain and simple. It's low budget, horribly acted and written. If the only issue it had was that it wasn't close to the source material, then it wouldn't be as poorly received. I don't see it as a horrible generalization at all. That's a fair assessment. How did you reach the conclusion that people don't like it is due to its distance from the source material?

Probably from directly talking to people? Or reading comments about how xyz is better because it is so much closer with adapting Dragon Ball? You cannot just come out and say it is lousy. I can see the weaknesses in comparison to other movies, but that is it.

This is old news.
He already spoke about it since 2010. Wrote a few comments on the video, too.

A well-made film but an adaptation that veers heavily from its source material can still garner a great critical response. The Departed is spectacularly different from Infernal Affairs in a number of ways, but they're both equally great films.

Dragon Ball Evolution was neither a hit with the average viewer or the dedicated fandom. It failed to be entertaining, meaning yes, it is a lousy film on the most basic level.

Eh, this isn't a big deal, I don't think a apology was even needed but it would've made more sense in 09 or 2010.
EDIT: So if Esfír Dedragón is correct this was even more unnecessary.

I wonder why old wounds were being opened up again about the movie. Perhaps, due to the resurgence in popularity of the Dragon Ball franchise, DP wanted a more explicit statement from Ramsey for the record.

I talked to people as well and closeness to the source material was A reason, but not THE reason why it was panned by everyone.

I always wonder how Dragon Ball Evolution would have panned out if the script was left unchanged. Would have it been more successful critically and commercially than it originally was? We'll never know.

Ben Ramsey was one of the many writers that DBE had. I remember Tedi Sarafian originally hire to write the movie back in 2003. I don't blame the writers for the movie, I blame the studio. Fox just wanted to make the movie to keep the Dragon Ball license and didn't care on making a good movie. They felt like a bad movie with a big brand name will give them a box office hit.
