Are we being played?
This is kind of a wild theory that just crossed my mind. By wild, I mean that it's kind of far-fetched and I'm not sure I believe it myself, but I feel like I should share it anyways.
What if FUNimation realized that making remastered DVD sets of DBZ would probably be the last time they could milk the franchise significantly, so they intentionally added something to their final product that would irritate many fans: cropped widescreen. But since FUNi knows DBZ fans to be weak-willed and compulsive, they know that many thousands will buy the sets anyway, despite said shortcoming. And then when FUNi's had its fill, they finally give us a 4:3 set, prompting many who've already purchased the 16:9 version to double-dip and buy it, too.
And I base this on the fact that FUNi had to have been completely aware that cropping DBZ into widescreen would have pissed off the hardcore fans. After all the shit they've taken from hardcore fans and fellow anime dubbing companies about what they've done in the past, they absolutely had to see this negative reaction coming. HAD TO.
So basically what I'm saying is that FUNi is either very clever and manipulative . . . or they are incredibly fucking stupid and never learn from their mistakes.
Again, just a wild theory.

My own theory is that FUNimation entered into this originally with the intention of making HD masters only. However, they realized they could milk a little out of the SD market by downscaling those masters to 480p and selling these cheap DVD sets.
The sad thing? I wouldn't care if they had just finished the UUEs. At least people would have a choice.

That theory doesn't sound too far fetched to me. FUNimation is not completely run by imcompetent people. Most people there know what they are doing, and know what fans want.
FUNimation milking the DBZ property for all they can has become somewhat of a tradition to them. They know that fans will eat their shit up and regurgitate it to other fans. Quite sad really.

No, that's just business deals. Just as ADV makes new EVA dvds every few years. Don't hear too many complaints on that front.SatoSky wrote:FUNimation milking the DBZ property for all they can has become somewhat of a tradition to them. Yeah but ADV's EVA have been both uncut and accurate while FUNimation's DBZ has always edited something.Super Sonic wrote:No, that's just business deals. No offense, but you're wrong there.Super Sonic wrote:No, that's just business deals. Just as ADV makes new EVA dvds every few years. Don't hear too many complaints on that front.
ADV finished EVA each time they started it. And in all honesty, the Platinum releases were leaps and bounds above the prior ones. Add to that the fact that they've only released EVA on DVD three times (original DVD's, Platinum and Platinum thinpak).
Now, they did try and do another DVD release here recently...and the fan outcry was so bad that they canceled it. You can check AnimeonDVD's forums and see those threads from a few months back.

If you're referring to the dvds then not really visual-wise.Gaiash wrote:Yeah but ADV's EVA have been both uncut and accurate while FUNimation's DBZ has always edited something.Super Sonic wrote:No, that's just business deals. I just think FUNi's doing this to make a lot of profit. If they don't put too much money (if any) on remastering and advertise it as the way it was meant to be seen, people will buy it. Plenty of people know it's bullshit but for the price, its a win-win basically (for some)...

I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

I guess they might be taking a cue from ADV and their treatment of Robotech. I think they are on the fourth or fifth release of that series.

Yeah, but that's not a different release to me. The original DVDs were physically different from the Platinums, which were physically different from the thinpak Platinums.Mystery Person X wrote:They released a box set of the original DVDs as well.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Add to that the fact that they've only released EVA on DVD three times (original DVD's, Platinum and Platinum thinpak).

This is going to come off bad. Its probably going to be one of the dumbest things I've ever said, but here it goes: What's stopping FUNi from buying the DragonBoxes? I mean literally going on Ebay, throw some subtitles and the dub track and bam: "Remastered" DragonBall Z. I know it sounds dumb but I could see Toei trying to sue Funimation and Funimation deliberately changing the subject.

Then Toei declares war and we'll have to round up all the fifth-columners. *nod*Mr.Piccolo wrote:This is going to come off bad. WRONG! Theres only EVER been TWO pressings of these discs. They've done the original television version (both in singles and in "saga" boxed sets), and then theres the remastered collection pressing (and a boxed set "Protoculture collection").
If you count boxed sets of the same pressing then why damn DBZ's really been anhilated, why there was the original Pioneer release, the boxed set of the Pioneer release, the ultimate uncuts, and the season one boxed set. No sorry but simply repacking thwe same pressing of the discws doesnt really work as "a new pressing".
