Is Mr. Satan based around anyone?

Is Mr. Satan based around anyone?

Post by Tyro » Sat Feb 10, 2007 7:06 pm

Simple question with (I'm sure) a simple answer. Has anyone ever actually heard if he's based on a celebrity/another person?

I always thought he was based on the stereotype of over zealous American wrestlers. I mean he talks big but in comparison to the real fighters he's nothing but a joke.

The reason I ask is because this guy said he thought Mr. Satan was based on Chuck Norris. And I thought, "that can't be true," but if even I don't know who he's based off of, how can I tell him different?

Mr Satan must also be based off Panpoot from original DB - both have afros and high egos.

I don't want to get into the "facts" of things but Hercule being based off of Chuck Norris is impossible. Why? Satan has bleed in more than on occasion and with that being said, I personally think that Hercule is based off of American wrestlers, more specifically: this man and of course, this man. That's just my opinion, there was another celebrity but I kind of forgot about it..:?

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

I can definitley see Hercule being based on Macho Man Randy Savage, they both think they are the shit. By the way, Chuck Norris is God.

I've always felt that Mr. Satan might have been based on a guy named Count Dante.

Count Dante was a world famous martial arts champion during the 60's and 70's. He appeared in a lot of comic book ads, and is very similar in appearance to Mr. Satan.

The name is even similar Counte Dante <----> Mr Satan.

I've always thought Satan's facial structure and mustache looked extremely similar to Hulk Hogan. His personality is pretty similar to Hogan's in-ring persona, too.

Now this is most likely 100% coincidence, since I kind of doubt Toriyama ever paid this kind of attention to American pro-wrestling, but... Hogan is actually not that great of a wrestler at all. He just knows how to work a crowd really well. His in-ring skill is a joke compared to someone like, say, Bret Hart. Meanwhile, Satan is a joke of a fighter compared to the likes of Gokuu and his friends, but all the people love him, and he's the only one who was able to convince them all to contribute to the final Genkidama. However, I do think it's entirely possible that Toriyama may have used a wrestler as the basis for Satan's design, based on the idea that pro wrestling isn't "real" fighting, so it's a joke compared to real martial artists. (That isn't to say that I think Mister Satan is supposed to actually be a wrestler in the series; just a possible parody of one.)

Also, as a side note, the anime-only girl that accompanied him at the Cell Game (Pizza or something?) has a very strong resemblance to the late Miss Elizabeth. The other guys remind me of a younger Shawn Michaels, and Vader.

Ya' know, Vader and Hogan were actually big stars in local Japan shows, I recall Vader even ripped off Mick Foley's ear in a show over there (now that guy can take pain). I haven't been into wrestling for years, maybe because the idea of a rapping white man who dressed like Vanilla Ice once being "the shitz" doesn't entrance me. Wrestling entertainment just isn't what it used to be IMO, somewhere along the line...it got repetitive and boring. Hence I stopped watching.

Hercule, he just seems like a merging of Hogan and Randy Savage, and the Savage personality seems to shine through much more in the FUNi dub. I don't think it's too far fetched to think Toriyama modeled him after those two wrestlers.

It wouldn't surprise me if those wrestlers, were the actual inspiration for Mr.Satan's character.
Remember that in Japan, pro-wrestling is really big!
Still...I would have enjoyed a more Ultimate Warrior/Mr.Satan thing.

You had me at "Bret Hart"  . Anyway, I used to follow wresting way back in the "good ol' days" when Roddy Piper was important and up until that whole "Corporate Ministry" stuff went on in the WCW and WWF (there is no WWE for me), so I know about the wrestlers you mentioned. However! Hercule does look like Hulk Hogan, but anytime I see an episode with Hercule in it (more specifically an episode with 'Hercule'), I could swear the next thing coming out of his mouth would be "Snap into a Slim Jim". :? According to the anime, there are examples of Hercule being a very strong man. But in the manga, it just seems like the common folk of Earth are too simple to understand how weak he is. Whether or not Toriyama was influenced by these wrestlers, I don't know. Does anybody know when Hercule was actually created?

Just did some checking and the chapter he first appeared premiered sometime in the later half of 1992. So depending on when the exact date was, Savage or Flair would've been champ at the time.

Q: Are you're a fan of pro wrestling? I ask because in Dragon Ball, there are some wrestling-style characters like Mister Satan.
A: Unfortunately, I'm not really a fan of pro wrestling.

As far as I'm aware Toriyama mentioned no-one as an inspiration, not to say there isn't one but the fact still remains.

Haha, I really doubt the guy has ever even heard of DBZ. It's probably a coincidence.
