Ah yes, the "over two million dollars of equipment" that apparently didn't do shit (and was actually more like 1.7-1.8 million based on the figures the guy gave in FUNimation's featurette, I kinda laughed when the guy paused and just randomly pulled that dollar figure from his ass even if he wasn't off by that much).

::recalls the scene where Raditz kicks Goku::

Hope it's okay for me to use it.
It looks a million times worse in motion.

I'll be busy tonight so I won't have any new clips up yet, sorry guys. :(

That clip where Goku begs Krillin not to kill Vegeta was nice in English but it seems it's not what Goku would be saying in Japanese. Once again, lots of black spots going up the screen. Also, doen't it annoy you how the narrator in English always has to say, "Last time on DragonBall Z" and Next time on DragonBall Z." The Japanese narrator never mentioned the title of the series ever in his dialouge.

I take it all back, the cropping isn't the worst part of this release...damn near everything else is. :P

Most of this has been said so I'll keep it short but,
1) Remastering = complete failure, and
2) Everything's looks blurred and bleached out. Check out Kaio's face when he appears in the last clip, it's practically white!

And finally, the audio mixing = failure x 10.
Even the mono Japanese track fluctuates the music/SFX volumes for dramatic effect. In this new mix it's barely audible; it sounds more like someone is playing the BGM in the room next door, while the characters are screaming in your ear.

If you have this set (or the R2's), check out the speech at the end of episode 35 in Japanese. Once Goku and Krillin have finished talking, the music level increases several notches and the shaking of the katana becomes the most prominent sound. Even in a mono track the audio is mixed nicely for dramatic effect. This new dub 5.1 mix is flat and washed-out sounding throughout. Rubbish.

(PS- Ethically, I still find the cropping to be the worst. )

EDIT:
Oh yeah, to all those people who've been popping up on this forum recently, proclaiming that this is the best looking DBZ ever...umm, I think you need to stop watching all those TV-ripped Naruto fansubs or something. Even FUNi's old 3-episode DVDs weren't this fudged-up.

Well, let's take a look at their amazing filtering folks!

Granted, I haven't seen the original, but that's... pretty bad.

Thank you for the clips Castor ! You picked many of the parts I was curious about. It doesen't look like a total failure but I can tell they made colours a little brighter. It looks nice however the cropping is still a pain in the ass. If it wasen't for the cropping and the sloppy remastering at certain parts (I'm dreading the Raditz kicks Goku scene) I would have gotten this. :( I don't see a problem with the audio but then again I have not seen the set in it's entirety.

EDIT: Heh yeah Bkev I noticed that too. I cannot remember if Vegeta was that blurry or not in the original. It's been awhile since Iv'e seen these episodes.

I haven't seen up to that point yet, but wow. That's disgusting. What episode number is that?

That deosn't even look like it's from the season set, and I've seen all the episodes on there. I would've noticed something like this, and I didn't. Hell, that shade of blue in the sky doesn't even look like season 1's, seems much darker and grainy than it is on my television. This is legit?

About the inverse telecine, I was able to get the footage to IVTC perfectly, but for some reason, the sound keeps fighting me and is out of sync. I've never had trouble converting sound to 23.976 fps before and I didn't wanna delay the clips so I just went the deinterlace/29.97 fps route.

Jesus, that's horrible. It looks like a blurry, watercolor-esque mess.

Would somebody be kind enough to put up a corresponding Dragon Box cap? I really want to see just how distorted this is.

Know I'm probably going to get bad feedback for this, but though it worked for the first 3 movies and DB, in my opinion, like Sailor Moon S, the English voices and Japanese music doesn't flow so well together. That's just my opinion though.

Don't worry guys, that's just an animation flaw. The cel is upside-down (we're seeing the back of the cel). However, Vegeta is facing the correct direction, so the mistake was most likely made when when they photocopied the ink-lines onto the cel. In other words, it was photocopied onto the wrong side of the cel, and the scene flashes by so quick that they probably just decided to ignore it. :P

I did find a nice example of the that horrible blurry/bleaching effect, though. Bleh...

Well at least we know that wasn't FUNi's fault. Thanks, DBW. :)

I lol'd at the Vegeta-blur, and I lol'd at the close up of Goku's face. Like SB said, footage is missing, and it's *not* because of the cropping.

How can you guys say that this has worse image quality then UUC, I would like to see a image that proves that. Why are you guys still complaining, you bought the thing that you had been complaining about for the past three months and now your angry about colors not cropping....

Anyways, I thought you guys weren't going to buy it ....
