I don't know about Ultimate Uncut, but I used to buy the old uncut VHS's and 3-episode DVD's back in the late 90's / early 2000's. Technically speaking, the image was worse (encoding quality), but it wasn't mucked up like these sets. The old DVDs looked like a poor broadcast master with some mild filtering done to the image. These look like poor film masters (which can be worse in terms of damage), and they've been DVNR'ed to high hell. I mean, FUNi's brightness and detail levels have always been an issue, but this set is insane.

Sure, the older releases were more grainy, but that's just the way it is with old shows. It looks like they've removed all grain in this release (which is a bad thing anyways since it means losing image detail), and instead we have 50 times more physical damage on the film which they apparently didn't even bother with.

As for proof, I don't have any more FUNi DVDs, but Tanooki posted this image comparing to the old Pioneer release to the new Season 1 set. Ignoring the encoding quality (obviously), I'd have to say the Season 1 set (left) looks much worse. No, the colors don't pop out like digital animation on the Pioneer release, but the details of the animation are all intact, and the image maintains a natural look.

Note the jet-black shadow on Kami's arm, and the horrible "smear" effect on the background art (particularly the yellow ceiling).

Anyways, I thought you guys weren't going to buy it ....
I didn't. And the cropping is still my biggest issue, it's just a moot point right now.

Personally from that screen looks like season one is better. Dont really see how pioneer is the better version. The pixels are a lot more noticable and the gokus skin tone is much better in season 1. Guess its all down to preference and I also agree widescreen is the down side to season 1.

Yeah, like I was saying, the poor encoding definitely ruins the Pioneer image, but you kind of have to put that aside (the disks are from 1999 after all).

If you just kind of stand several feet back and look at the image, you won't see the poor encoding as much. Looking at the image from a distance, you'll (hopefully) see that the Pioneer version maintains a higher level of detail, and retains a look of natural film, giving a greater sense of depth. The one on the left has a very artificial look to it...it's kind of like digital animation, but the details are all distorted. Goku gi is a brighter orange, but again doesn't look very natural and pops way too much compared to the background art. As for the background, it's just a mess.

Anyways, you're basically right that it's just a matter of preference. If you think the Season 1 set looks better, then I can't really tell you that your eyes are broken or anything. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? I'm just looking at this from the viewpoint of an animation and film buff (which I am). It's kind of a rule of thumb for us, you always want to stay closer to the source, no matter what the quality. I'd rather have a junky-looking original master, then some DVNR muck. Kinda like the people who still cling to those old Star Wars VHS sets.

And the only reason I hold FUNimation to remastering the film damage is because they said they were going to. Want to buy film? Then you better know how to work with it.

I actually tried that (I went to the other side of the room), and the Pioneer version looks a bit darker, but ok when compared to the season 1. The season one's image seems very pale.

Amazing that some people considered the Pioneer stuff to be 'the bomb' in quality 10 years ago.

I just watched the clips and I noticed how bad Funimation are a remastering, it seems like they obtained the original that they say would be improved yet they left all of the black dots and marks in it... which makes it really look like an anciant series.

It is a old series... and its film has been raped by time and misuse.

Yes, we get it. DBZ is old. No one is contesting this. Here's the thing:

*ahem*

FUNimation states, on the DVD set itself, that the series underwent a "frame-by-frame" restoration.

That's obviously bullshit, since everyone here that owns the set has admitted to the presense of dirt, glue and other shit. Either Jeff Healey did the frame-by-frame remaster, or FUNimation/VP&T is full of shit.

Just for comparisons...

and the DragonBox

Main thing here is the color of the sky, which I think FUNI just has a bogus master.

After watching a good number of episodes on the actual TV, the cropping doesn't seem all that bad. There are times where its obvious (like the eyecatches), but I think my TV has a bit more overscan than some other TVs. So basically, the black bars are somewhat minimal. I think I'll compare actual DVDs and use my digital camera to take pics so we can compare the overscan bit.

Now, watching it on a PC monitor is another story though.

But I still say the biggest gripe is the amount of dirt on the screen. Otherwise the release isn't all that bad (for the price that is). And I do enjoy the marathon feature, auto skipping of songs and recaps... finally a good idea.

LOL at people complaining about the Vegeta image.

"OMG, SO BLURRY"

"Um...that's how it always looked..."

*silence*

I'll pick up the set, it's too cheap not to, even with the cropping. I dunno what I think about the remastering yet, but honestly, as much as I love the show, DBZ, especially season 1, does look pretty shitty in general. Toei performed a miracle with the DragonBoxes.
