So I got my set from Deep Discount DVD, and watched a disk and a half. I'm pleased, and have no complaints about the set as a whole. This'll be the only set of DBZ I'll actually buy, and it'll be nice. I like the fact that there are a few months between each set, it allows me to spend my money evenly.
Now, I may be giving Funimation too much credit for this, but what if the reason why it's wide screen and super-duper HD (And scaled down)...is so when a HD format kicks in, it'll look better than black bars on the side?
(By then, wide screen TVs will be a regular. I, however, only have a portable DVD player that's wide screen and it looks nice)

I think I'll be buying assorted Dragon Ball things for the rest of my life.

1. They'd be wrong, since black bars on the sides is infinitely preferable to having a large proportion of the original image removed.
2. That's no good reason to cripple the regular DVD release.

Another thing I forgot to mention:
- Some scenes that have lots of shaking (earthquakes for example), certain lines on characters will dissapear from one frame and reappear in the next. (One that really stuck out was when Goku was riding the Oni-guy's street sweeper on Serpentine Road. The lines on his mouth would dissapear in some of the frames in the close-up.) Is this due to the automated grain removal that FUNi did or is it just me? Becuase it's very annoying.
I'm workin' on a custom case right now, I hope to get some good high-quality paper soon to print out the cover.

I got my set. It's definitely awesome. I notice the wide screen but it doesn't bother me at all. The dub with the Japanese music is awesome but after the first episode I found myself switching over to the Japanese version. The picture is very nice. The only weird thing I found was in the english ending credits. If I'm correct, it credits "Tien's mom". WTF? That's a mistake. Other than that I love it. The occasional stratches or dirt that pops up doesn't bother me because it only lasts for like a second and it's never bothered me before. I've only watched the first disc but I'm sure the whole thing is awesome. I'll definitely be getting the next sets.
Edit: Why does my post change Ten(I purposely left the I out so it wouldn't change) to Tenshinhan? I mean I know Tenshinhan is his real name but still.

Ok... is there a reason that on my dad's wide-screen TV, I'm still getting bars on the top and bottom of the screen?
...
Though, the subtitles seem to fall half-way between the picture and the bottom black bar, so it would screw me up anyways.
But, um... why was every one worried about the opening and ending looking awful after being cropped? Weren't they used in movie one?

So far I have seen Disc's 1 and 2, and I have to say I love the picture quality . Though there are still numerous scratches flying around at times. Only thing I don't like is that in the Dub it doesn't open up with "Cha-La" it opens up with the Dub intro song they use for the movies. Other than that does anyone know if CDuniverse has Season 2 pre-orders?

FUNi's remastered footage does brighten up the colors, but that in turn makes seeing scratches and whatnot easier to spot.MysticGogeta wrote:So far I have seen Disc's 1 and 2, and I have to say I love the picture quality . Though there are still numerous scratches flying around at times.
And as for certain scenes where it's obvious that the action is focused in the center here's one I uploaded.
Yep, we definitely needed that one inch extra white on both sides

All-in-all, I'm satisfied with my purchase. As long as I can get each season for less than $40, I'll be a pleased customer.
I'm not a videophile, but the video quality looks fine to me. I collect older TV shows and movies on DVD, so scrathes/film damage doesn't bother me. The dub with the Japanese music and the amount of episodes definitely made it worthwhile to me. I'm still hoping that FUNi gets it together and at least releases a fullscreen 4:3 version along with the widescreen version. That way both camps will be happy. Whatever happens, FUNi better not cancel the season sets down the road like they did the UUEs, because they need to have all 291 released consistantly.... rather, I need them to.
Either way, I intend to buy every set released, even if I already a significant amount of the original FUNi DVDs. Later!

Concerning the replacement of "Cha-La Head-Cha-La", I thought of something.
With that in mind, I have a question. By any stretch of the imagination, is there a chance that FUNimation may not have been allowed to include the Japanese song in the dub? I know that's stupid, since it's the opening song, but is it a possibility? Or am I looking too much into the situation and it's just a very FUNi mistake? On the FUNimation Forums, I wrote:None of us know why the song was replaced just yet. Personally, I think it was some kind of mistake, since FUNimation promised the original Japanese music, and aside from an insert song (which they probably didn't have the rights to) and a certain piece of background music (which many people believe to be a glitch in the music track they used), they have delivered in that regard, and I see no reason for them to go back on that promise.
Upon further inspection of the DVDs, however, there is something that hints that this might not have been an accident. As you all probably know (if you have the set), there are two subtitle tracks for the episodes: one for the Japanese track, and one for the dub that translates "ZENKAI Power" at the end of every episode. It's obvious that the latter sub track was included to help the English fans understand the Japanese songs, but when the dub opening plays, the subtitles for "Head-Cha-La" don't appear. Isn't that kinda wierd to anybody? I mean, if there was a mistake, and the English opening song was put into the English dialogue/Japanese music track by accident, then you would assume that the subtitles for the song would show up, since FUNi would have included them, thinking that "Head-Cha-La" would play. Since they don't appear, though, it gives off the impression that they didn't put the Japanese opening song in the new dub on purpose. I don't have confirmation of that, but it is fishy.

I wouldn't be bothered by the scratches if they didn't talk about how awesomely remastered it is. Overall, it's very good quality stuff compared to what FUNi was giving us before.theoriginalbilis wrote:I'm not a videophile, but the video quality looks fine to me. I collect old shows, too, so I tend to not care if there are scratches and stuff for the most part. It's when the show is supposedly remastered that I start to care.

Also to all these peeps coming by ever since the resurgence of Season 1 set topics & talking about how awesome it is due to what seems to be a significant backlash towards these sets, have to understand that these issues have been talked & looked upon for months, so in turn, many people have different reasons towards not buying these sets. I feel you fail to understand the many reasons some people gauged toward not buying these sets. PEOPLE, it's not always the remastering or the widescreen (while that being the basis of all this).
You have to consider the fact the FUNi's been elaborately dancing around the fact that it is cropped, claiming it to be remastered frame by frame, etc., In other words, it just seems like they're lying & ignoring the rather blatant of problems with the set. The fact that they have ads calling it the "definitive/perfect collection" doesn't help either. As mentioned by previous forum members in past, where all were happy & getting along (yay!), if only FUNimation admitted to the fact that it was cropped & far from perfect, but still insisted on releasing it on this format with a possible selectable fullscreen format, I would buy it ASAP or hell even if they were just honest about it, I'd consider buying this set.
I do feel really discouraged, when people decide to cave in & purchase the set, despite all the problems with it, the false advertising, & FUNi's amazing ability to do the "Macarena" when approached about these issues. It's rather insulting to my intelligence & me being a consumer of all they're other fabulous merchandise.
I just guess in the end, it's whatever floats your boat. I'm just glad I ain't in it.
