It's Over 8000!

I'm sure people know this, but in the original japanese version, Vegeta says "hassen" which is 8000 in Japanese. How come FUNi kept it at 9000?

The point is, if "nine thousand" fits the lip movement then "eight thousand" would fit the lip movement as well.

FWIW, "kyuusen" and "hassen" are the same number of syllables too.

FUNi also changed the power readings read from the Saiyans' scouters throughout that saga, too-- not just the 9000 line. Some could be passed off for having to match lip flap, but others have the same syllables if translated accurately.

Conclusion: FUNi's just weird like that

Powerlevels are meaningless anyway, since most of them can contain their power.

If I had to make a guess...

I don't know why it was changed to 9000 in the ocean dub, but I think that FUNi had become aware of the now famous "It's over 9000!' video, and kept it at 9000 for the redub because of it's popularity.

And that wasn't a particularly funny video.

If you think FUNimation was aware of that video and because of it actually kept in an incorrect-by-1000 line in their redub (which had precedent from their original dub from a decade earlier) that aired months and months and months before the clip you just linked to...
