My issue with his work is that all he's been doing lately is changing the colours to make them look like aged film, which isn't a realistic look by today's standards, and doesn't actually solve any of the issues with the character designs. That said, I appreciate that it demonstrates that the current colour design isn't a particularly great follow-on from Z. Though not quite there, the JSAT special's design was a lot closer, likely in thanks to the colour designer being the same person who handled Z's in the first place.

A reddit user named ink8yte also attempted to produce a series of 'Super in the 90s' images, but his designs were based on the Toriyama's early work, rather than Nataksuru or Yamamuro towards the end of the Boo arc. They're weren't horrible, but they were hardly suitable replacements.

While I certainly do hark on about "the old designs", I do think it's important to evolve and produce era-appropriate work. I just want those designs to actually look good and feel like a pleasing iteration on what came before. My biggest issue is that what we currently have feels regressive. But eh, we're stuck with what we have, and I'm honestly kinda bored saying the same things over and over. As long as I keep getting fun deviations with Tate, Shimanuki, and Karasawa, then I'm good.

You made all the great points. I agree that the older designs doesn't hold up in today's era of animation industry.

I don't really think the color is the really issue here. My main gripes is Yamamuro's bad character designs. It just doesn't look good. With bad designs come key animators' regressive works. While I'm glad to see Tate, Shimanuki, and to lesser extent, Karasawa deviate from Yamamuro's models, we can't ignore Yamamuro's glaring influence on their works. Karasawa is really good. He's able to take Yamamuro's designs and made it his own without making it look horrible. I wouldnt mind him becoming character designer, but that ain't going to happen, so I'm content with him being animation supervisor.

The color design, meanwhile, is lesser of two evils, but it's still bad. Speaking of aged colors, I do think Goku's skin color would look great in today's animation. Vegeta's doesn't look great, though. It's too much of saturation that would clashes badly with this era's color standard. JSAT's colors aren't bad, but I do not like how they colored SSj form.

It's too bad that it had come to this, but I'm just happy to see the animation improved now.

What do you think?

Much better color and design. Super makes them looks like they have baby faces and would be really soft like a marshmellow. These guys can tank a galaxy exploding so yeah....soft baby faces of these tough bad ass warriors...doesn't work.

They shouldn't try to make super look like a modern anime, they should make it look like dragonbal. Make it look timeless. Not part of the current decade/era of animation style. That's how things become dated.

The more you try to be trendy and modern with something the more you make it dated.

You make your show like the yogi bear skateboard reboot that tried so hard to be that 90's skater kid modern feel of the time, sure it's good for the business man's charts that say "this is how things are now. Make it like this".

Don't try making dragonball look like modern anime, make it dragonball, which was timeless. Not a 2010's decade anime.
Any post before 8/7/2016 isn't mine. This account was a gift from someone who thought the account was already banned. Saved me the trouble of making a new one haha XD

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z animation was done according to how it used to be done back in the day, by default they are dated, they are timeless cause they were "well" animated, good animation itself is timeless (look at DISNEY´s first movie,Snow White and the seven dwarfs a 1937 film) and bad animation is not, thrends has nothing to do with it.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Modern anime should look modern.
That isn't the problem with Super, the problem is the character designs and the awful colors.

I don't want to repeat myself but to me the best modern take of the Dragon Ball world is the 2008 special.
The characters are themselves, the animation is nice and the artstyle is modern but has the essence of the older series.

I just noticed there were lots of people in this episode who previously worked in episode #38.

I didn't like the background drawings, they didn't fit well with the characters.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Episode 45

Image

Animation Supervisors
Lee Joo-hyon & Kitano Yukihiro

Key Animators
Kitano Yukihiro Nashizawa Takashi Koizumi Hiroyuki Higashide Futoshi Hoshino Mamoru Jin Shui hu Park Jae-seok Sugawara Rieko Tu Yeong-chaek Studio Myu TAP

What a horrendous episode. Tate wasn't supervising after all, but he almost certainly did uncredited animation at the very end there unless someone is mimicking him. Kitano is a terrible supervisor.

Shame, I wanted Tate stuff so bad! I agree about Kitano, he is easily my least favorite supervisor on the staff. At least this means that Tate's getting more time?

This was a boring episode like last week. The difference is that last week's episode had wonderful animation. So disappointed Tate basically did not do anything on this episode.

Yeah, that's definitely a positive. Weird to see Yashima pop up again after only just doing #40. I guess things got shifted around to allow for the best animators to make a good start on the Trunks arc. Not complaining!

I didn't think last week was all that boring, personally. But to be fair, I really enjoy the lighthearted humour between Trunks, Goten, and Jaco, so there was a lot for me to like. This episode just felt like there was a lot of standing around and doing nothing for 15 minutes, followed by shoddy animation, and a sort of okay ending.

Yeah, that's definitely a positive. Weird to see Yashima pop up again after only just doing #41. I guess things got shifted around to allow for the best animators to make a good start on the Trunks arc. Not complaining!

Yeah! I give you that. It wasn't so boring, but oh boy, this episode really was. I liked the last part a little bit. And I kinda liked the transition of goku's kamehameha on kaio's planet in this episode.

Kitano without Yamamuro is the worst supervisor of the series. By far.
By the way Ajay, any idea on who's working on next episode? Looks like nothing to me...

Is Yashima even human? Good lord! I had to do a double take after seeing the NEP, I wasn't expecting to see him pop up again quite this soon either. The man can get stuff done!

Updated with the image.

This is basically all that Tate did, so it's no wonder he wasn't credited:

My hopes and dreams are shattered! He may well have done other parts, but I'm too tired to look.

Back to the main episode itself though, I feel like if that scene on Kaio's planet were drawn better, I'd have actually really liked it. It's not easy to do rotating background animation like that. I quite liked it for the most part. Someone should gif it (not me, I'm going to sleep).

Tate is better off not supervising this episode. This mini arc isn't really significant, so it's wise on Toei's part to let him focus on the upcoming arc. Naoki Tate's last episode was #38, so he will have at least 14 weeks for his next supervision appearance. That's plenty time for him to do his usual stuff. I wonder if Toei takes advantage of this mini arc to let the main staff focus the next arc by allowing them more weeks than usual in-between.

Shimanuki, Tate, and Karasawa really need to focus on the next arc. Yashima is doing better job sacrificing than Kitano, so I wouldn't mind him being on the rotation.

Pretty big step down from the past couple episodes, it also had a much smaller staff than 42 and 43, I'm guessing Toei has these last two episodes before the new arc as low priority.
Hopefully this means we get Tate on 47 with a good amount of time and animators.

Well by the sounds of episode 39 the biggest problem now is that by the time they are ready to animate there isn't much time left before the episode airs. Hopefully the point of this mini arc was to improve that.

Yashima can put out some pretty okay episodes on a small amount of time, hell the NEP makes the next episode at least look like it has some nice motion. Kitano is just stiff, I wouldn't mind if they brought someone in to replace him, Yoichi Onishi or Ken Otsuka would both be great choices.
