Censorship in DB: Advanced Adventure?

Post by MisterFlashdude » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:35 am

It's a nice little game. Great to play when you have 15 or 20 minutes of free time. Going through it again, though... I get to Namu (The turban-clad fighter in one of the Tenkaichi Budokais) who is now called Nam. I can't help but notice that... his skin is bleached. In both his character portrait and the character himself. :? I browsed back a few months to see if this was pointed out before and didn't notice anything...
I can't help but wonder if this is our wonderful country's way of avoiding having an obviously middle eastern character in a kid's game in our sensitive post-911 world... Sounds like something we'd do.

I wanted to know if anyone can verify that he doesn't have the same bleached skin tone in the Japanese version. :?:

Well, I don't know about the Japanese version, but he does have bleached skin in the European version. As well as grey eyebrows. But his skin tone and eyebrow colour are correct in gameplay. :|

It would be nice to know which version you have. I don't remember if it's in the American version, and I don't have it anymore so I can't check.

He's bleached in the Japanese version too, just checked. Never noticed it.

I have the American version. Figured there wasn't voice acting and how could having the text in english (for once) possibly make the Japanese version superior. :P

Nope Nam wasn't black in the original game either, he seemed to have light brown skin due to the player being able to see him on the GBA screen... same goes with that Bear monster with the huge sword.

I suppose even Japan have levels of cultural reference which they must keep and change if nessacerry.

He wasn't black in the manga either, so I fail to see what's this all about.
King Chapa and Oob had dark skins. Not Nam (heck, he even briefly impersonated Kame Sennin, so...).

Namu/Nam has a brown skin tone. There are no exclusively "black" humans in the series in DragonBall except General Black. For the most part, Uub has the same tone as Nam anyway...Happy February everyone

Uh... he definetly does have dark skin... :? Atleast, he's suppose to. About the same tone as Uub. For some reason, in this game, he looks almost more pale than Goku.

And for the third time: not in the manga.

First of all... we're not trying to establish that he's "black"... He is dark-toned. Considerabely more so than he appears in the game.

My manga shelf just happens to be 3 feet from the computer, and I've got DB vol. 4 right here... he's shaded in quite a bit. :D I'm not trying to argue his ethnicity, I was only curious if it was an American edit or if his tone was changed in the original game, as well. It would seem it was.

Manga is black and white... why use that as an arguement? :?

That's being too manga purist-ish, imo...

I hope not! ^^;

Well, one could expect his skin to be a bit dark, yeah, but based on the manga, it's not as dark as King Chapa's or Oob's. And it's apparently light enough for him to briefly impersonate Kame Sennin. So I wouldn't expect much more than a "tan".

Because Toriyama used tones for King Chapa and Oob, and he didn't for Nam.

I don't see how. "Dragon Ball" is a manga to begin with. It just seems logical to use the manga as a reference.

Oh, my bad. When the topic of skin tone of the Dragon World comes up, usually the question of Uub's skin tone does too; just wanted to put it out there. With that being said:

He seems much lighter when he dresses up as Roshi in that one panel compared to the anime. Then again, I can't remember if that was one of the colored chapters. I'll check it out later.

Naw, it's one of those, er, flatshaded chapters. XD So the gag works better there. Plus he stood far away from Goku and Kuririn, and let's just say those two are gullible.

It most likely a mistake, at least if it are in the japanese version too. They send both nude and extreme violence on kids TV! Another possibility is as earlier mentioned it should be easier to see on the GBA screen.

But his name Nam is kinda correct since many countries has translated it into Nam.
