Why did Frieza use Finger Beam over Death Beam?

I've noticed the differences between Finger Beam and Death Beam.
Finger Beam shoots a beam onto the opponent.
Death Beam shoots a beam through the opponent.

So, why did Frieza use Crazy Finger beam on Piccolo instead of Crazy Death Beam? It would've killed the Namekian for sure.

Mm, yes, I suppose. That's how Frieza is. I guess if Cooler was there, he'd probably use Death Beam.

Because Freeza didn't want to kill him just yet. He wanted to torture Piccolo a little because he thought he was in total control of the situation and no one else could stop him.

I think a more interesting discussion is why doesn't Freeza use the Psychokinesis Bomb, which is a tiny red energy sphere that goes into the opponent's body and allows him to control their body, then he can expand the energy to a point that will blow them up.

Yeah, like using that on Goku instead of Krillin? Frieza's awesome, but he's so dumb sometimes...

The technique Freeza uses on Piccolo in his 3rd form is not actually a "beam" of Ki, but bullet-like shockwaves of air created through his finger movements. He likely opted to use it due to Piccolo's speed, and the fact that the attack would be too fast for him to dodge.

The Rapid-fire Death Beam is a more advanced technique that requires an extensive battle ability; according to Daizenshuu 7. So perhaps Freeza couldn't use that variation at the time, but only after he transformed into his final form.

Freeza is sadist. It's not enough for him to just kill his opponents, sometime he just likes to "play" with them before dealing the finishing blow.
