I think it's a nostalgic thing for long time fans or like a reflex to protect someone you care about. I think they'll have to kill Goku along with Black. If Earth's DB's are out of the picture, along with Namek's, it'd be cool to see Whis and the other cast go searching for the Super DB's to revive Goku. Anything can happen during that time, including a new threat that Vegeta and Gohan will have to deal with. I'll take anything over threatening to blow up the Earth over Pudding. It was fresh at first but it's sort of run it's course and become stale. Comedy is great, but there comes a point in time where you need a serious story-line going on, especially in a Shonen where it's fight to kill.Honestly, it doesn't for me.
Unless you write out the Dragon Balls permanently like what happened in Trunks' time, death will never be taking seriously and the fact that this takes place between the end of the manga where everyone lives makes it less so, so the whole 'OMG, we got a dark arc', falls flat to me. At worse, you get something like Namek/Frieza Saga where the heroes have to go through a lot of steps to revive everyone.
I also disagree with the cast not taking death seriously. If they truly saw death as no big deal as some seems to think, why would Piccolo bother to sacrifice himself for Gohan, knowing he can just be wish back or why was everyone sad about the Earth being destroyed by Freeza. The cast don't take death completely seriously, but they don't just blow off death either since they go out of their way to make sure they and their love ones don't die.

I don't think thats Black, maybe he has a robot army.Neon Z wrote:This shot makes Black look rather robotic. A large hand coming from some cable-like structure.

The thin arm/cable connected to a larger hand can also be seen here.

So, it really seems to be Black's true form rather than some placeholder shadow.

I wouldn't be fully against it.
A random monster possessing Goku and making evil would be crap though seeing as they did that already multiple times.

It looks very similar to him so maybe he's currently just a spirit and he needs someone else' life force to feed off of before he can go back to the way we know him.

If you look at some of the other shots you will see this this being seems to have spikey hair, I think this is Black Goku no a being called Black. Hell look at this one, look at the top of its head. Thats Goku's hair blowing in the wind.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Is that Black's hand (in glove)?

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
No, it's the exact opposite. Toriyama originally drew Blooma with blue-green hair, but she has had purple hair in almost every single full color chapter and special illustration since chapter #003. And given that Goku's dogi permanently changed from purple to orange at the same time, it's fair to assert that her blue-green hair was a "beta design" of sorts.Nekis13 wrote:Also didn't Bulma's hair shift from Purple to Blue in the Manga? Hell. That's the perfect evidence right there.SaiyaSith wrote:Some people are being dumb about Trunks hair. If kid Trunks has purple hair, it's obvious that his hair gets blue with age...
Trunks has purple hair because Blooma has purple hair. At least as far as the manga is concerned. And it has likewise almost always been purple in every full color chapter and special illustration.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
The Namekian Dragon Balls can only be written off if new Namek is destroyed, so unless Black Goku does that, what happens to the Earth isn't really that dire. It really is nostalgic since fans think Dragon Ball is more tense than what it is. Only the King Piccolo Saga and the Namek/Freeze Saga had any real consequences for death. I guess we can count some of the Cell Saga after Piccolo merged with Kami, but other than that the only real tension was how the main villain was going to be defeated.Xeztin wrote:I think it's a nostalgic thing for long time fans or like a reflex to protect someone you care about. And the pudding thing was only with Beerus. Freeze really did blow up the Earth and all but won, and it was only undone by Whis. The only reason why the Resurrection 'F' Saga isn't seen as dark is because we already knew how things will played out since it's an expansion of the movie. It still doesn't change that Gohan got tortured, Piccolo died, and Freeza blows up the Earth and we saw baby Pan die along with everyone else in the explosion.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
You can have a villain and many implications of violence, but that doesn't necessarily make the tone of a show "dark." Super, in comparison to late DB, Early DBZ, and the majority of movies has been very light-hearted. The issue isn't that it has comedy; the problem is where it places this comedy. In this case, the drama is constantly undercut by gags. DBZ had the same sort of problems at times, and it was never well received. For example, Mr. Satan in the Cell Games. However, the balance was far, far superior.
Super has a very, very hard time maintaining any sort of momentum when it comes to drama. I recall that episode Beerus fought everyone, things became ominous, the planet seemed to be as good as gone. Then, the next episode involved him playing a game with Oolong. During the battles, there is almost always some cutaway to a gag that clashes with the sort of tone people expect during the given situation. Additionally, with the introduction of these god characters and super dragon balls, there are also very little stakes on the line. It's gotten to the point where... there is no point.
Naturally, when many fans see a preview like episode 47's, they get the hope that this will finally be an arc with actual stakes; a villain that is not just a food-crazed, neutral asshole; and, most of all, focus (as in, keeping the flow going without any interruptions). All these things factor into what people loved most about DBZ and late DB: the characters being forced to push themselves to new heights and figure out a way to combat threats. Comedy is always welcome, no matter how dark a show is, but for Kami's sake, know when and where to place it. For now, less is more.

At least we know Mai is from Trunks timeline. I guess we can say that Pailf, Shu and Mai wish to become younger before #17 and #18 show up.

The Super Dragon Balls are so absurdly more inaccessible than the Namek ones that it barely makes any difference. They had that 2nd set available to save the day for quite some time already.
I find it very funny when some people treat the "lack of death as a possibility" as some sort of new thing. I really couldn't say that with a straight face when it comes to Dragon Ball, where characters literally just died when they really wanted to.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Even if they got rid of all the balls, we know who makes it at the end. Tension and life/death suspense is dead. There's nothing to get invested in as we've seen everyone make it at the end of the series. I guess maybe Future Bulma/Mai/Trunks might be the only maybes, but even then I'm sure they'd be saved somehow. Death as Tenshinhan said in TFS, is utterly meaningless. It's just a little revolving door where you spend a little time either with Kaio or in lovely heaven, then come back refreshed. Death is like a spa treatment.
Seriously it's like how X-Men Apacalypse had no real stakes because we saw everyone in the future was alive again in Days of Future Past. So no one important was gonna die.

Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Pretty much. Even when Kid Buu blew up the Earth and all seemed lost, Denda reminded everyone that they can just teleport to Namek and used their Dragon Balls. Even if Goku can't do it, they call in favors to the Supreme Kai and have Kibito teleport them. Granted, Old Kai will have a fit about it, but I am sure they can bribe him.Araki wrote:The Super Dragon Balls are so absurdly more inaccessible than the Namek ones that it barely makes any difference. What sold the tension of the Cell and Buu Saga wasn't death, but how would the heroes prevail against overwhelming odds, because even with the Dragon Balls, they are useless if everyone dies, which is about the only way death can have any consequences in this series.

Death in db is like death in comics It doesn't mean shit At All hell when piccolo died in super it was so forgetful that he was wished offed screen so again death in db is pretty much nulled what.

Not in Trunks universe were they have no dragon balls and no way to get to Namek. Hell they are struggling to get just enough fuel for a one way time trip.
And that whole situation is made infinity worse by the dark death bringing flying around the place.

You can have compelling and interesting storytelling without having "tension" or things at "stake".dbzfan7 wrote:Even if they got rid of all the balls, we know who makes it at the end. Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
For the record, death is not treated like a joke within the series itself. As mentioned, in comics, it means little there too from a reader's perspective, but that does not mean the characters in the stories don't try to prevent it. That struggle to overcome the odds and become stronger to prevent death creates stakes and tension. So yeah, the notion of death is important in Dragon Ball.
If I mentioned the Super Dragon Balls, it wasn't because they can be used to revive people. It's because they are limitless. Evil threat actually stronger than most of the gods? Just wish it away.
