Best way to watch Android Saga?

Post by HourglassIndigo » Sat Jun 04, 2016 10:36 pm

I grew up on the old Nicktoons broadcast of Kai back around 2010ish. Now that Future Trunks is returning in Super, I plan to marathon the whole Android arc/Trunks arc to celebrate his return. My only issue is choosing which way to watch it. I refuse to watch the original English dub for Z, because i'm not a fan of the voice acting. I can't decide whether to go with the version I know (English Kai), the original broadcast of Z (subs), or The Japanese Kai (so i can still get used to the VA, but get through the arc quickly). I'd really like to get through it before episode 47. Should i watch the version I know or try the original broadcast? Thanks for the help!

I'd watch the original Z with subs. If you end up watching Kai watch it in English. This may be an unpopular opinion on here but I think Kai is one of those magical anime where the dub is better than the sub.

Thank you! I'll probably do that!

English Kai isn't a bad way to go, but you said it was the version you know, so I assume you've already seen it. There's nothing wrong with watching it again, but if you do go with Kai, I personally think you should watch it in Japanese, just because you haven't seen it that way yet. You might as well try something new, right? It's up to you, those are just my thoughts.

The original Z because Wakamoto's Cell was excellent in that era. The original's Kikuchi placements are much better too. If you prefer the Kai pacing, watch it in Japanese with Yamamoto's score if you can.

Out of pure nostalgia, I'd say go with Kai in english :D . I remember seeing it on Nicktoons coming home from Regardless of the edits, it really was the best Funimation's english cast ever got.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But honestly, just drop the idea of watchin it if ur planning to celebrate/rekindle/rejoice the presence of Future Trunks in both Android Arc & Super

Regardless of what many think, Android Arc is darn entertaining. Its entertainment after all. Things dont need to be arty or poetic or dark to engross viewers.

Simple & light with good dose of fun, drama & emotion is fine & Android Arc was just that

If you watch Android Arc & subsequently get hyped for what linda serving Super's gonna give, I assure you that you'll be disappointed. Better just drop the idea. No offence mate

Geez man, no need to be so negative.

i mean, if you intend to watch Super in Japanese, then you should go with Kai Japanese for the Cell arc. Their Super voices are gonna sound closer to their Kai voices than their Z voices, due to the closer timeframe, so that is probably best if you want to get used to the voices.

Nice avatar by the way.

I actually loved the first Z dub of Trunk's appearance vs Frieza.

If you like dubs I would say watch the one that´s more accuarate to the original scrip (FUNimation dub of Kai) otherwise pick the subs.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Best way to watch the Cell Arc is to watch Z episodes 118-199 with subs and Otherworld Torunament filler at the end as icing on the cake.

Thanks! I'm probably going to watch all of the original broadcast after I finish the android saga. I've seen the series multiple times, but never in Japanese, so it'll be a nice change of pace. Thanks for all the help!

Just watch Kai version. You will bail mid-way through if you attempt original run with all the filler. This ain't the 90s and you likely dont have as much time.

The best way to watch the Android arc is intoxicated. That way you wouldn't notice the several glaring moments of stupidity on both parties, the heroes and villains, that keep the plot going.

If you only have a week, I think the obvious answer is to take the Kai route in whatever language you feel like.

I'd personally suggest Japanese since, my own preference aside, it'd be nice and consistent to head straight into the Super arc.

Kai might be a better option for time (I'd go Japanese audio either way), but since the arc doesn't have any truly terrible pacing issues in Z, the presentation there is much better. (Aided greatly by a better utilized soundtrack than either version of Kai; Kikuchi's new tracks for that era of the series are great stuff, and lead to many memorable moments.)

At that point in Z, things are going a bit slow for me. If you can get your hands on the Japanese broadcast version of Kai, the Yamamoto score for the Android/Cell arc is wonderful. The Kai dub is almost wonderful, so for me it's a trade-off between the dub and the Yamamoto score. I see little point in Japanese Kai with Kikuchi - it offers improved pacing on Z but that arrangement is pretty terrible.

What about the Yamamoto Revival and the Music Revival (Z Kikuchi and Faulconer) projects? Or do you prefer the surround sound mix that those fanmade versions lack/prefer using only the official discs?
