Voice Acting in the Video Games

Post by Mr.Piccolo » Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:35 pm

With all of the newer games coming out we see the VAs and Seiyū going back to the studio to record lines from the series, fighting noises, menu dialog, etc. My question is aside from newer characters being added and what-ifs added to the game, how often do the VAs return to the studios for the games? I mean if you are playing a Sparking! game, chances are you are hearing the same voices and sound effects from the last game or you will be hearing the same ones on the next game. Thoughts?

I'm not so good on the smart talk, but here goes...

I think that there isn't much need to record all over again for a video game(especially a fighting one) because it's mostly just grunts, and the opening dialogue before the fight doesn't matter because most people(I know) just skip it. The only good reason I can think of is if there are new characters in the game that weren't in the last one.

I do know a lot of the in-game voices, such as grunts and random taunts are reused. I recall some of the Budokai Tenkaichi ones (such as Recuum's "Lick it" and "You do well hah hah hah, you do well!", as well as Kurilin's "Can you feel it?") were the exact same ones from back in the first Budokai game.

I noticed some of Masako Nazowa's line recordings for the story mode in BT2/NEO were recycled from the first BT/Sparking! game. This observation comes from comparing them back-to-back. Some of them sound like the exact same deliveries.

For all the battle noises you're definitely going to hear some repeats there. Who really wants to spend many days recording grunts and shouts. Not very fun.

I know that Jeice's "Don't play stupid with me, wankah!" line from the first Tenkaichi is in Tenkaichi 2 as well...except that they removed the "wankah".

I'm guessing they recorded new lines for Budokai 2, since the story mode was different.

I agree that they shouldn't rerecord lines they've already done, but they need to make them sound like they're the same quality. In Sparking NEO, half of the English clips sound low quality(recycled Budokai clips), and the others sound great.(new clips)

I've never heard the 'wankah' bit!

Damn, and I've lost Budokai Tenka'ichi.

I recognize some lines (Recoome's "you do well") stretching back at least as far as Budokai 2, maybe further.

Hmm, my guess would have to be, 'not often'.

Mainly, concerning the original voice cast... as sad as it is, it's true, that the voice actors are dying =S

I guess... they can have replacement actors, but I dunno how it'll affect the delivery of the lines, maybe for better, maybe for worse.
But concerning how they go back to redo lines, as stated many times, Recoome's line 'You do well.. etc' has been around for a LONG time in the dub lines of the games.
Unless there's truly new content... there's probably a voice they can use for it. And if they get REALLY desperate, they can always just cut lines used from the show (XD)

Actually, one of the reasons I started this thread was based on Recoome's dialog. I could swear he sounds exactly the same in every Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi game.

Ha, that's when it gets really bad. They end up recording it straight off of Cartoon Network or something XD
