I can say that smoking a pack a day won't do that to your voice, unless your job involves heavy vocal work. It's seen all the time with singer's, why would voice actor's be no different? Preferential, most likely not, but I'm assuming that it's a combination of both, seeing as how he would have to accustom to whatever his lungs allow him to put out.Obi-Wan wrote:I'm just trying to make a point that maybe Sabat's change in style is preferential and totally unrelated to being a chain smoker.

In a ditch somewhere
I don't have anything against smoking myself. I just thought of having a little courtesy for some of the younger viewers. Not saying that you don't have any courtesy for them. I just think that a Dragon Ball forum isn't the best place for kids to learn about smoking, and other things that might drive their parents nuts.

Just my opinion.

I wonder if Funimation plans on doing any re-dubbing and hopefully re-writing for the Trunks saga. Not only because Eric Vale's Trunks voice has changed, but because the back and forth banter between Trunks and Freeza was so damn awful.
On the other hand I did like Cold's voice, despite deviating from the original Japanese. I hope they keep that intact.

If smoking really is the cause of this, we would have heard it in his other roles, not just Vegeta. I do not believe this to be the case at all. He's had these roles for 7 and a half years now, with each episode going by gaining more experience. He 'evolved', for lack of a better word, into his current Vegeta voice in Season 5.nathantheguitarist wrote:I can say that smoking a pack a day won't do that to your voice, unless your job involves heavy vocal work. Same with his Piccolo, which is where I can remember everyone mentioning the smoking problems with this voice. He didn't get it into smoothing it out until extremely late season 4. That type of voice has evolved not just for Piccolo, but he used a softer version of that for Raizen in Yu Yu Hakusho as well has Armstrong in Full Metal Alchemist.
It's the show that brings you in, but it's the fandom that wears you out.

Interestingly enough, DB, Z, and GT all had different narrators. The same was for Ocean DB and Z around 10 years ago. THough I thought I heard that Mr. Sabat did the narration for GT?Eclipse wrote:Do we even wanna try bringing in Andy Chandler's "I'm a smoooth narrating voice with only one emotional tone, on the next GEEE TEEE" into this?I thought they were all done by the same guy! >.<

I hope not. Those episodes are some of my favorites. I loved the lines, I'd miss them too much.Deus ex Machina wrote:I wonder if Funimation plans on doing any re-dubbing and hopefully re-writing for the Trunks saga. Haven't you read what I've been saying? FUNi's leaving the dub w/t broadcast music track alone, as in no dialogue alterations like the dub w/t Japanese music. Proof of that is comparing Vegeta's "Kaioken" pronunciation after Goku uses it against him for the first time in season 1. Don't worry, your inconsistencies and corny writing will still be there. I know this was worrying Chuquita too, but if season 1's any indication, you two still get what ya' want.Lavender Saiyan wrote:I wouldn't mind if they were to re-dub Trunks first few episodes. I just don't want the diolauge changed.

I would hope to have them somewhat attempt to try and make it remotely resemble the original script, at least for his first episode appearance. The Japanese version is utterly BAMF and the Dub is...scripted by a writer for the old 60's Batman cartoon.Lavender Saiyan wrote:I wouldn't mind if they were to re-dub Trunks first few episodes. Thing is, if they're re-recording certain voices. Like Sabat trying to sound like Drummond, then since they;re changing the voice anyway, they could fix lines.Conan the SSJ wrote:Haven't you read what I've been saying? It's really not fair to make that comparrison. The Simpsons started from Season One and went onward. Just from the point of view of the Uncut FUNimation dub, DBZ started with Season Three, and did Seasons 1 and 2 after the end of the series.Undercooked Sausage wrote:Yeah they should re-dub the first season of the simpsons while they're at it.
All the progressive changes of their voices past Season 3 would result in big differences in the voices from Season 2 to 3 instead of a gradual change.
