I am dreading the dub of Super.

Post by TheMikado » Sat Jun 18, 2016 7:24 pm

Like the title says I'm dreading the dub of Super especially if funimation does this. I say this as someone who recently realized just how much the minor changes in the dub changed the overall characterizations. More importantly the manga vs the anime and the fanbase's obsession with "canon". For reference I stopped participating as actively here because Super's anime just isn't doing for me. I've been keeping up with the manga though, but now seeing how different the stories are at times it's like we are reading/watching different stories between the manga, movies, and show. My fear is what happens when it gets dubbed and localized. Will the take more from the manga? More from the movies? Or more from the Japanese anime. It feels impossible to tell, plus a large chunk of that audience may only be following the dubbed movies.

We already argue over canonity and power levels all the time. Will so many possible versions it feels like that's all the discussion will be about and "which" version you experienced. I feel like it it almost be impossible to have discussions on DB anymore after that :(. What do you think? I'm just praying we doing get the happy meal comic book of super next.. Hopefully Toriyama has a bit more creative integrity than that or another bastardized version of Super.

We aren't in the '90s anymore. Funimation dubs are faithful adaptations, for the most part.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Anime and Funimation are really good now.

That's fine and all but specifically we have multiple versions of the source material. Which will they be more faithful to? It's easy to say the anime, but it may not necessarily pan out that way.

They're dubbing the anime, so they're going to be using the scripts from the anime.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're not even aware of the manga.

I don't think there is anything to fear at all. The dubbing for Dragon Ball as a whole from FUNimation has been excellent, in my opinion, since Kai. Hell, Resurrection F was their best ever work on the franchise.

Funimation has been on point since DBZ kai, nothing to worry about
Toyotarō: … I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?

Toriyama: Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.

What about the upcoming Toonami Asia dub? You think that is going to be problematic at all?

Why would it? That would be an English dub for the Southeast Asian market, while the FUNi dub would be for the North American market (plus, they'd probably license things out to Europe and Australia as need be).

But yeah, FUNi does fantastic dubs, and they would be accurate to the anime (don't know why one would think they'd factor in the manga).

Honestly I was thinking they would be thinking more of the movies since their target markets primary experience would be through that.

Funny as I'm looking forward to it. My bro doesn't even wanna watch it until the dub comes, and I didn't either. Got convinced eventually...

The only thing I'm dreading about the dub is first-time fans bringing about the hell that came from episode 5 all over again. I think a large majority of people are fairly clued up on things now or have become apathetic to the situation. I really really do not want to deal with that headache again.

I heard they improved it in the DVD set, so maybe the dub will use that?

It's improved to an extent, but the first half is still pretty bad. I can't see it dampening the blow for a lot of fans. Either way, they'll get to episode 24 eventually, which hasn't received any home video corrections, and that'll cause a similar outcry, I'm sure.

Only thing I dread is going through the retellings. I know they won't, but I'd rather they just skip the retellings, and just dub those on the side. Much rather start with the Champa portion.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Honestly, as long as they're open about that, I don't think there'd be any problem if they just started with Champa's arrival. As long as they don't go pulling any "DRAGON BALL SUPER: THE LOST EPISODES!!!" on us. Like, just broadcast the show starting at episode 29 and then make it clear that "Episodes 1-28 will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray shortly". That's really all they need to do. And it'll probably help Super in the long run too, as they'd be kicking off the story with actual new content that still makes perfect sense as long as you've just seen BoG and F.

Maybe they can have BoG and RoF air on Toonami then air the Champa arc after. That's what I would do.

At most FUNi dub will add some extra jokes and maybe one or two off lines like they did in the movies. Nothing to drastic to worry about.

Mah, i don't fear ep 5 anymore, i mean, the fixed version is full of bad shots as well, but is not as bad to make me get mad.
I fear RoF, god damn it i hope that the dub skips RoF.
I really miss ma boy, Black :(

You're lucky, because Funimation's dub for dragon ball is pretty cool, i still remember the inconsistences from the spanish dub.
Ehem "onda vital" "guerrero del espacio" (instead of calling a saiyajin, saiyan or saiyajin, that dub changed the name into "space warriors" or something like that)
