Re: Things the Dubs did better.
It is my opinion and i am not the only one with this opinion. For me FUNI's 'Americanized'DB is beyond terrible. The word"Americanized" is enough of a reason to support my statement.Dbzfan94 wrote:Why come on to a pro dub thread like this just to spout hate? I never understood this mentality. The dub has its issues yes but it's not nearly as terrible as you say. Besides Freeza, they got everyone's personality pretty much the same save for some OOC lines.
"Ally to good nightmare to you" is just one OOC line i agree with you but it is because of just this one line Son Gokuu becomes a completely different character. Trust me there are still people who think Gokuu is a selfless hero. FUNI and only FUNI is to blame for this misrepresentation.
Vegeta isn't any close to the author's intended character either. He keeps bitching about trivial matters and the whole" Freeza killed my daddy and made me what i am" is another crap FUNI pulled out.
Piccolo in FUNI's Dragon Ball is some sort of a server of justice. His connection with God and Daimao the whole demon related stuff is never touched upon and it is a very important part of Piccolo's character.
You can still like it but it is a terrible dub this is a fact and there are other dubs which are far better.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
Again, those are all out of character lines yes. They're never mentioned before or after again thus I believe it doesn't have an impact on their personality as a whole.
There's nothing wrong with the Faulconer score either (constant music and no silence aside) and in my opinion many areas surpasses Kikuchi, for instance Cell's death.

I don't know where you got that idea. It is touched upon. And you seem to only limit "the dub" to DBZ.Piccolo in FUNI's Dragon Ball is some sort of a server of justice. His connection with God and Daimao the whole demon related stuff is never touched upon and it is a very important part of Piccolo's character.

You meant to say "Funimation". There ARE other dubs lol.
Re: Things the Dubs did better.
Backscratcher jokes.
Real talk: The Faulconer Productions score is much, much better than it needs to be, even if it radically alters the tone of the series and the constant Mickey Mousing is a little unfortunate. There are plenty of tracks in it that remain quite memorable to me, so kudos to everyone involved, feelings on the practice of score-replacing aside.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
The SSJ3 transformation scene I thought was handled better in the FUNi dub of Z. Other than that, not a damn thing. Especially if it's in regards to characterisation.

No, but I think a male stone cold killer works better with a macho voice. I also think that a female stone cold killer goes better with a more feminine voice. I don't think that murder or serial killers are inherently "macho". It's just a personal preference really.ABED wrote:How does a stone cold killer work better with a macho voice? Is being a stone cold killer inherently macho?
I think that the high pitched voice absolutely fits Buu better then his Japanese voice. I guess they were sort of going for more of a slightly realistic man-child voice(which is actually pretty funny)but I honestly find it kind of unsettling. The first time I heard it, it just totally caught me off guard and still really doesn't work for me. The other Buu forms have ok voices but I just prefer their dub counterparts.ABED wrote:And Buu? Martin's obnoxiously high pitched voice is horrible and made worse by his infantile dialog. Then there's Cook, who is a god awful actor who couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.
I also find it kind of annoying how you seem to be acting like it's a known fact that Justin Cook is a bad actor and anyone who disagrees has the "wrong" opinion.
I totally agree Faulconer's music fits that scene much better than Kikuchi's imo. I ADORE Kikuchi's score but it just doesn't fit that scene if you ask me.Lord Beerus wrote:The SSJ3 transformation scene I thought was handled better in the FUNi dub of Z. I am 80% sure that it was Tomiko Suzuki. It's not the GT actor, that much is for sure.LuckyCat wrote:Which one? I always thought that he was lying about that in a failed attempt to get Gohan to aim specifically for his upper body when in truth his nucleus as in his crotch or something. Otherwise he's an even bigger idiot than I thought.Kamiccolo9 wrote:They fixed the plothole with Cell's head. That was pretty cool, I guess.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
That's actually a pretty solid explanation, but with Toriyama, it's most likely that he forgot about Cell losing his head (and torso).RandomGuy96 wrote:I always thought that he was lying about that in a failed attempt to get Gohan to aim specifically for his upper body when in truth his nucleus as in his crotch or something. "Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
I haven't watched FUNI's DB for almost a decade now so maybe it is touched upon. I don't remember my mistake. Although i do remember Piccolo does say some stupid shit against Gero like a true server of justice where in the original he explains about his character. Now you might think it isn't something drastic but for me it is.ABED wrote:I don't know where you got that idea. It is touched upon. The early portion of the series is not that good for me either. The mystic feel that it has is somewhat lost in FUNI's version, there are some OOC lines which bothers me for instance Gokuu's romantic line to Chi Chi, the edited jokes, just like Schemmel i find Nadolny unbearable as Gokuu the other VA's too fail to strike a chord with me so all these take away the enjoyment. If you enjoy it cool i don't have any problems with that.

Love FUNimation's take on the "Mr Satan saves the world" movie in the Boo-arc Tournament filler. That's about it.

I vastly prefer Cell's English voice actor to his Japanese one, the Japanese actor just gets on my nerves for some reason.
I also don't like Nozawa as Bardock & Tullece (I do like her as Black though) or Nakao as Cooler.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
I liked Gohan's transformation after Old Kaio's power-up. That Faulconer music is definitely one of the pieces that I like from him. Staying with music, I like the idea that everyone kind of had their own theme. I don't think that was the case in the Japanese version. I know that future Trunks, for example, had a really good theme in the Japanese version, though I don't think that was ever actually used in the series.
Might not be popular, but I do like Goku's more heroic portrayal in the dub. It kind of redeems his character. Once I realized that Goku was just a guy who liked fighting and getting stronger more than he really cared about his family, friends, etc., it kind of soured me on his character a bit. I just don't understand how I'm supposed to get behind a character with Goku's motivations. I like the notion of heroes with a pure heart who would do anything to save others because he/she is the only one who can. Oh, well.
