Re: Things the Dubs did better.
Let's see:
FUNi Kai Dub > JPN Kai
I like Martin's Buu to Shioya's Buu.
I prefer Sabat's Vegeta to Horikawa's and Sabat's Piccolo to Furukawa's.
I have to agree with ekrolo2's sentiments about Cell except that I don't hate Wakamoto.
That's all I can think of right now.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
I really like Wakamoto as Imperfect Cell, its his other forms that seem off to me. His Semi voice feels better suited for his Perfect state and vice versa.
The Semi voice is softer while the Perfect voice is growlier and just comes off as weird coming from a guy like that.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
I want to agree, I really do, but the "fix" is not only a wrong translation, it creates more plotholes that aren't answered. Cell doesn't regenerate from a single cell like Buu. He needs his nucleus to regenerate, and it's amazing how many dub fans don't know about it:Kamiccolo9 wrote:They fixed the plothole with Cell's head. That was pretty cool, I guess.

Cell doesn't regenerate from a single cell because of that one line. They changed the line. Ergo, no plothole.

The line in FUNimation's dub is, "...one living cell survived, and that is all I needed for my regeneration."

That contradicts his line moments later. "Each my cells carries a memory of its former self, each one programmed to make me whole again."Kamiccolo9 wrote:Yeah. It sounds like any living cell will do, not just a particular nucleus.

Isn't that a confirmation of what he says earlier? He says any cell will do, never just the one in his head.LuckyCat wrote:That contradicts his line moments later. Re: Things the Dubs did better.
Because every living cell has a nucleus. Actually, I think red blood cells don't, thus the "disk" shape, but that's besides the point. A "nucleus" isn't just a made-up thing from the show; it's the brain of the cell.LuckyCat wrote:That contradicts his line moments later. Re: Things the Dubs did better.
That's the problem. If any cell has a nucleus and will do, any of his leftover living cells on a battlefield could regenerate him. Just like Majin Buu.ekrolo2 wrote:Isn't that a confirmation of what he says earlier? He says any cell will do, never just the one in his head.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
So? Living cells are in saliva and blood that are all over the battlefield. Even if Gohan killed his main body with a massive kamehama, apparently any leftover cells could still bring him back. Now you can say "Oh but the others are dead now" but cells can live outside of the body for several days. It's all minor, but it's still not answered by the script. Toriyama's single nucleus idea was meant to answer that problem, but of course we know Toriyama still messed up with the head line.Kamiccolo9 wrote:So?

Except we know that these guys can be totally destroyed, as we see with Buu later on. The show even mentioned that every Cell has to be destroyed. Every cell was destroyed. No plothole.LuckyCat wrote:So? Living cells are in saliva and blood that are all over the battlefield. Re: Things the Dubs did better.
Cell's regeneration also takes up energy, since it's based off Namekian regeneration. We see this when his ki drops after regenerating from Goku's Kamehameha. That moment occurred right after Cell had literally just had the majority of his power beaten out of him. If he was at full power, then sure, he might have been able to regenerate from that, going off the dub line, anyway.LuckyCat wrote:Like I said, living cells are in saliva:

I agree with the thing regarding Cook, he's not a terrible actor and ABED should stop acting like it's a fact. Like, have you seen his acting in YuYu Hakusho and One Piece?gogeta97 wrote:No, but I think a male stone cold killer works better with a macho voice. It's just a personal preference really.ABED wrote:How does a stone cold killer work better with a macho voice? Is being a stone cold killer inherently macho?
I think that the high pitched voice absolutely fits Buu better then his Japanese voice. I guess they were sort of going for more of a slightly realistic man-child voice(which is actually pretty funny)but I honestly find it kind of unsettling. The first time I heard it, it just totally caught me off guard and still really doesn't work for me. The other Buu forms have ok voices but I just prefer their dub counterparts.ABED wrote:And Buu? Martin's obnoxiously high pitched voice is horrible and made worse by his infantile dialog. Then there's Cook, who is a god awful actor who couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.
I also find it kind of annoying how you seem to be acting like it's a known fact that Justin Cook is a bad actor and anyone who disagrees has the "wrong" opinion.
I totally agree Faulconer's music fits that scene much better than Kikuchi's imo. I ADORE Kikuchi's score but it just doesn't fit that scene if you ask me.Lord Beerus wrote:The SSJ3 transformation scene I thought was handled better in the FUNi dub of Z. Other than that, not a damn thing. Especially if it's in regards to characterisation.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
That's fairly good reasoning, and I guess my issue would still be that the script didn't address it.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Cell's regeneration also takes up energy, since it's based off Namekian regeneration. Well sure, but, I mean, Buu could have spit or chucked a piece of him off far enough away to survive the Genki Dama, and he didn't.LuckyCat wrote:That's fairly good reasoning, and I guess my issue would still be that the script didn't address it.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Cell's regeneration also takes up energy, since it's based off Namekian regeneration. Personally I still consider it better reasoning than "I can regenerate as long as the nucleus in my head isn't damaged" being said 5 minutes after having the top half of his body blown off.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
The difference is that Cell visibly does have cells laying about, so it's not hypothetical. And I suppose compared to Toriyama's goof, the dub line's a little better, but FUNimation could've fixed the line entirely by just having Cell say his nucleus was inside him and not specify where.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Well sure, but, I mean, Buu could have spit or chucked a piece of him off far enough away to survive the Genki Dama, and he didn't.

Re: Things the Dubs did better.
That's what makes him interesting. Isn't it unique to have a protagonist who makes decisions the audience can't always get behind? He has his vices, like anybody else, and his main motivations are driven by taking a martial arts lesson a little more seriously than Turtle Hermit intended. Most thought-provoking of all, he is still considered pure in the world of Dragon Ball, meaning in Toriyama's mind, a pure heart isn't equatable to performing righteous actions. However, I do think it's an overstatement to imply that he doesn't care about others. He has exhibited a capability for developing strong bonds with others starting with Gohan and ending with Vegeta. To take it out of world for a bit, it's almost as if you want to rehabilitate him (portray his character otherwise) with promise that you're doing it for his own good and the result is that he ends up saying things he doesn't really mean, but it makes him a little more likable, acceptable in the public eye. In reality, his actions will end up betraying what we want him to be like, so the relapse begins and everyone dislikes him once more for not following society's script despite Goku never caring for that in the first place, wild as ever.TheGreatness25 wrote:Might not be popular, but I do like Goku's more heroic portrayal in the dub. It kind of redeems his character. Once I realized that Goku was just a guy who liked fighting and getting stronger more than he really cared about his family, friends, etc., it kind of soured me on his character a bit. I just don't understand how I'm supposed to get behind a character with Goku's motivations. I like the notion of heroes with a pure heart who would do anything to save others because he/she is the only one who can. Oh, well.
