I don't have any artwork because drawing isnt my thing, but that doesn't mean for the LAST FUCKING TIME, that i can't post in a thread.

Affirmative. Ssj Kaboom, might you have the answer to my problem? The scans you display on this thread of your artwork is always nice and clear. Mine are..well, the opposite.

Oh, okay, sorry. I'm no expert, but...

Only thing I can think of is that you might have your scanner's resolution set too low. Try digging into the settings and cranking up the dpi (dots per inch) and similar things.

When you're done editing the artwork, knowing which file format to save it in helps with the overall image. Things like .jpg and .bmp are compressed, so they're smaller in filesize, but look worse overall. Try saving to formats like .gif or.png, instead.

Let me just step in and point some things out here. BMP is actually an uncompressed format. That's why it's so unsuited for web display, because it's inconveniently large for most users. JPEGs are generally compressed but at their highest quality setting you won't notice any difference in quality. But as with BMP, the downside is filesize.

GIFs are fine for simple images (and your only distributable choice for non-video animation) but they're limited to 256 colors, so while they are lossless they can still lead to things like color banding, etc. depending on the picture.

PNG, on the other hand, uses lossless compression and preserves the color of the image, so it's really your best bet for most uses. I rarely use anything else any more.

Don't worry about it, dude. Not too many people are total experts on these things (I'm not, either). And you had it right for the most part; I just wanted to clarify a few things, that's all.

I'm an idiot. I usually work with files as BMP because I'm actually afraid JPEGs, GIFs, and all of the other formats leave the image gritty afterwards. This is coming from someone who hasn't mastered photoshop (I was promised a free version a while back. Lying bitch). So, for now, its MS Paint FTW..I need to get with the times... :(

.BMP perserves best but it's WAY too huge and most browser settings don't support it. .PNG is Kami, because it has almost no image loss.

I mentioned that in my above post. JPEGs are only as good as their compression ratio. It's a trade off between better quality and smaller filesize.

Using your own opinion to critique on SOMEONE ELSE'S artwork is just plain redundant... It's art. You don't tell someone how they should draw... :?
it wasn't a critique i just told her some things i didn't like about the artwork, and i know its not my artwork dipshit i never said it was.
(EDIT 3: Ignore this part!)
Uhm... didn't you just say earlier on that your comments weren't "bashing" but "critiques"? D:

Seriously, lay off... you've said your bit about her work. If you really want to pursue an argument with anybody who's objecting to your words, take it up in PMs instead of posting it on the thread here. You're littering. D:

And as a side note... now I'm afraid to post up any of my recent artwork here... and I sure hope my saying something now doesn't spark up another wave of bickering, especially since it looks like it's -kinda- calmed down... @___@;;
(/Ignore)

EDIT: I am an idiot. I didn't read all the posts like I should have and jumped the gun in replying. It looks like everything I've just said, as sensible as it may or may not be, did not need to be said. My apologies. :<

EDIT 2: Holy crap, how do you strikethrough? D:

Hey, there's no problem with using MSPaint. I still like to use it a lot myself. Its simplicity is quite underrated (and there's actually a few things you can do with it that are a bit difficult to do with Photoshop... like hand-drawing exact-to-the-pixel scales, for instance. Perhaps you'll see what I mean by that later... B: ). Also, it's fun just doodling with it. :D

As for the file types I use, I mostly stick with Bitmap, especially when I'm saving something for the first time or am doing a lot of delicate work with lines or coloring. I find, for me, that Bitmap is the only file type I can save to that saves everything exactly as it originally looked. Saves a lot of fuss when I'm working on a piece on-and-off ("Wait a second, I thought I was using this color?!").

As for when I'm using Photoshop, though, yeah, .PSD is also very good. I prefer to save all the pieces that I'm working on in that program with that file type; I'm not sure if Bitmaps record the fact that you've got several layers on a drawing you're coloring. ^^; And for the web, I mostly use .JPG, but only by converting a .BMP or a .PSD file to it at the highest quality possible through an outside program that lets me control the compression ratio (I'm pretty sure you've seen what happens to a .BMP when it's saved as a .JPG in something like Paint... *shivers*). So, I make .JPG copies that are only a bit smaller than the originals, but still retain almost all of their details. (It goes down though, depending on how much my filesize limit is when uploading something. o-o)

A-hahahahah... I'm pretty sure I just bored you all to death with that. I'll try to actually put up some art here in the next few posts to redeem myself, I promise! D:

Piccolo: Well, MSPaint can save to PNG as well, so if you're proficient in that there's no need to limit yourself.

Kino: Just for clarity, BMPs do not save layers. Layers are for the most part exclusive only to your image program's native file format (in this case, PSD, which are good for potential changes to an image you have already rendered, or if you plan to reuse some of that image's elements and create new ones from it. On average, PSDs are much too big to trade around online, especially if they're cluttered with unused, invisible layers and the like).

The only type that can be both displayed natively in a web browser, and edited later, is a Macromedia Fireworks-type PNG. However, this adds more data to the end of the file; data that only has any significance to Fireworks users, so it can make them clunky for everyday viewers.

In short, the optimal way to save your work is to keep an editable version on your hard drive, then output the final product to a [simple] PNG for distribution.
