My work on the Room 29 fandub trailer.

Post by Conan the SSJ » Tue Feb 20, 2007 8:40 pm

Basically, this thread here is intended by me to keep all of you up to date on the upcoming trailer I have in mind for Kaboom's Room 29 fandub of DBZ movie 3 (what's the title now?). More or less, I've actually put a lot of work already into this, even though I haven't received any Dragonbox footage to work with and a Goku VA hasn't yet been selected. Luckily, Kaboom excepted my terms that I'm allowed full creative control, meaning I get free reign over the work of this and decide what lines are to be recorded for it, how the video is arranged, and what music is used.

Unfortunately, at the moment, it looks as if I may have to use the 1997 FUNi/Ocean edit-version video track for the trailer, which if I must resort to, then I'll put up a disclaimer when my trailer is complete. I already have a "demo version" finished, which is basically my entire layout of video footage to use, going to the song I hand-picked; the "Requiem for a Dream" remix (Lord of the Rings, anyone?). I'm making some slight tweaks to my script to correspond with ADR looping work that I'd like done in the trailer (fighting sounds, laughter, etc.). Once it's finished, I'll post the "demo" up on YouTube or MegaUpload with subtitles/captions of what lines/sounds are to be recorded.

If the situation comes that I can't use Dragonbox footage, like I said, I'll just have to use what I got. Other than that, all that's keeping things halted is selecting a VA for Goku. Rick, Kaboom, Kino, not trying to rush you guys, but please do that conference soon. My trailer is coming. For those interested, I'll post a script of the trailer soon, once my final tweaks and whatnot are applied.

Requiem for a Dream fits perfect for this.

Awesome choice of song.

Thanks. :D

And now, the script for the trailer. Apologies if this doesn't make much sense, as some of these lines are ADR-looping sounds. Hopefully once I have the demo up, it'll be more clear what I envision for this trailer. With that said, the script:

NARRATOR: "Coming soon, a DragonBall Z dub like no other."

GOKU: *Happy laughter sounding it's from a distance*

NARRATOR: "Being brought to you by Room 29 Productions."
NARRATOR: "Fandubbed by a specifically chosen cast of devoted DBZ fans."
TULLECE: "Heh heh heh heh heh....."

BLUE ALIEN: "Lord Tullece... Planet Earth is still lush with life."
TULLECE: "That's where he was sent, years ago..."

TULLECE: "...Kakarrot!"

KAIO: "Goku, something terrible has happened."
GOKU: "What do you mean?"

KURIRIN: *Powering-up sound*

NARRATOR: "The fifth known English dub of DragonBall Z movie 3...remastered in Dragonbox format for wide-screen viewing."

RAKASEI: "Even Freeza will be nothing! Lord Tullece will be emperor of the Universe!"

KAIO: "I'm afraid it's too late..."

GOHAN: "...Daddy?"
TULLECE: "I can understand your confusion. My name is Tullece."

TULLECE: "This boy ... he's exceptional."
OOZARU: "GRAOOOOR!!"

TULLECE: (Chuckling) "Hmm-hmm-hmm... (Thinking) To think that the Earth would be capable of supporting the Sacred Tree..."
KAIO: "Once the Sacred Tree takes root, it sucks the life out of the entire planet in order to make its fruit. The Earth'll be left a barren wasteland."

TENSHINHAN: "Who in the world are they? Their ki... it's intense."
GOKU: "The ones who planted this tree..."

PICCOLO: "Let that child alone."
TULLECE: "Say please, 'big green'.”

NARRATOR: "Are you ready?"

PICCOLO: "Makankosappo!"
YAMCHA: "Sokidan!"
GOKU: "Kaio-ken!"

PICCOLO: *screams in agony*
TULLECE: "Join me. We'll eat, drink, and take the best the universe has to offer!"
GOKU: "For the last time, I'm Son Goku!"

NARRATOR: "Join Son Goku in his never-ending battle against the forces of evil as a rogue Saiyan and his followers intend to cripple the Earth and our heroes."

TULLECE: "The difference in our power is like the gap between Heaven and Hell."
GOKU: "I've crossed that gap and I'll do it again!"
TULLECE: "You truly aren't worthy of a Saiyan destiny."

GOKU: "Hyaaargh!"
TULLECE: "Hyaaaaa!"

TIEN: "Ayaa!!"

KURIRIN: "Hyaa!"

YAMCHA: "Hrr, hah, errr, ryah!"

GOHAN: "Haaa!"

NARRATOR: "Includes original detail and the true color scheme as intended by Toei Animation, never before released in the U.S., translated to English in phenomenal accuracy."

TULLECE: "Last chance, Kakarrot. Kneel before me and beg."
GOKU: *attacking sounds from Goku in the distance* "I'm actually glad I hit my head as a baby! It kept me from becoming scum like you!"

TULLECE: "Huh? Auugh! Err, Hyaa!"

Goku: "If I truly am a Saiyan, then I'll be sure the next generation grows to be respected, not feared!"

NARRATOR: "Battle for Earth!"

NARRATOR: "Available for download and YouTube viewing in the near future. If you miss this, you miss the newest addition to DragonBall Z history."

Requiem for a dream is also a great movie! Huh, oh, thanks for keeping us posted on your progress, Conan! Yay, I got the line! :o

Funny thing is that the origin of those lines mentioned are a joke but I can't help but feel it is one of the most important scenes of Movie three and the most memorable. So ridiculous dub line FTW. :P

I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Heh, I like what I read, I had a very cool trailer in my head playing while reading it.

I've never heard the song you plan on using, but seeing some of your other works doesn't lead me to doubt you.

I had posted my version of the script a little whiles back in the main project thread; it's what Conan's getting the lines from.

Until my laptop is up and running again, I an't really work on the comparing and melding together of mine and Shinpan's, we she has just finished and provided me with.

Requiem for a dream is a great song, but it's so overused it's a little annoying.

Anywho, good luck.

Yeah, seriously. Every trailer/fantrailer uses this song.

I know I'm not involved in this project, but this would be the last song I'd use for a trailer.

Songs that fit trailers perfectly and are NOT overused:

Hans Zimmer: A Family Affair
Don Davis: The Road to Sourceville
Dario Marianelli: Knives and Bullets (And Cannons Too)

Just my opinion.

Maybe the song is overused, but I have a liking for it and I think it fits what I came up with perfectly. With that said, I got news. Evidently, YouTube's being a bit odd and is having difficulties uploading my "Demo" trailer, so I brought it on over to MegaUpload. Sorry to those who were looking forward to it on YouTube, but for the moment, you'll have to DL it and watch on Windows Media Player or something like that. Here's the official description I was gonna use on YouTube:

"What this basically is, is exactly what the title says. It's a "Demo" version of the planned teaser trailer for the highly anticipated fandub of DragonBall Z movie 3, Tree of Might...or as us Room 29 members that frequent DaizEX's message board call it, "Battle for Earth". By "Demo" version, this is an unfinished version of my intended trailer. What you're going to see is what's basically my entire plan for the video footage I've come up with using, as well as a corresponding subtitle/caption guide due to voices not yet being recorded (and also because, as of this writing, a VA for Goku hasn't yet been selected).

I'm proud to say I've been allowed full creative control over this trailer, so what footage is being used, what song is going with the video, and basically the entire style of it are all my choices. More or less, this "Demo" is how I envision the final version to be, it's just in here where there'll be a lack of voices, though I did make sure to time those subtitles/captions to match where the recorded lines and ADR sounds will be inserted. Keep in mind, once my final/finished version is complete, this "Demo" will be taken down, so give it a go now if you're interested and please let me know what you all think. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: While this "Demo" trailer is advertising that our fandub will feature the Dragonbox footage, the footage used in this is clearly different from what we're hyping. This is because of time and computer restrictions/issues currently going on both on my part and with the head of the fandub project, so aside from a very brief comparison snippet you'll see (Gohan preparing his Masenko-Ha), all the footage here is from the 1997 televised edit-version's video track. I'm getting this out in the open so you all hopefully won't feel the need to give me any stingy comments about lying or whatnot, using this footage is a last resort due to the restrictions of attaining the Dragonbox footage I need and also due to the fact I can't burn DVD movies to my computer drive. My apologies if anyone finds this odd, but rest assured, the actual fandub project will contain the fully unaltered Dragonbox footage."

Download away.

Could you save it as something other than WMV? I can't play that.

I'm sorry, Jappo. That's the only format I can get it in. Maybe someone'll upload it to YouTube, till then, nothing I can do to help you.

Nevermind, I downloaded the Flip4Mac plugin.

Here's my brutally honest feedback, which I mean in no offense to you at all:

And, yes, I know this is only a demo.

1) The music is very noticably overused, but if you must use it, make sure the voices are much louder than the music (in most places, obviously some places need more dramatic music).

2) Windows Movie Maker titles suck. You're probably using a different program anyway for the final trailer, so ignore this if you are.

3) Video transitions would be nice.

Again, I know this isn't the final version, and I know you're probably aware of all this. Just killing time by telling you what I think needs improvement :)

That's what I plan to do. You honestly think I'll let the music drown out us VAs? Trust me, we'll be well heard.
JAPPO wrote:2) Windows Movie Maker titles suck. You're probably using a different program anyway for the final trailer, so ignore this if you are.
Actually, I won't be using a different program. Windows Movie Maker is what I intend to use for the final project. Sometimes I use Photoshop to alter certain frames or invert the color, but other than that, Movie Maker's what I work with. Sorry if that irks ya'.
JAPPO wrote:3) Video transitions would be nice.
They would also, IMO, make the trailer look too generic for my tastes. Hence why I only used fades and one other transition only with that Dragonbox comparison.
JAPPO wrote:Just killing time by telling you what I think needs improvement :)
Unless I get Dragonbox footage for the final version last second, this is exactly how the trailer is gonna be. And even if I do get Dragonbox footage, it'd be pretty much a copy-pasting in terms of what footage I'm using, just differing in quality. Basically, what you're seeing is what you're getting. Yay creative control.

Wait, so you're going to be using WMM for the final dub, or just the trailer?

I'm downloading the trailer as I type.

Photoshop? Ok then...*looks for tutorials*

Well, anyways, regarding the title, you could just have a graphic (The logo or anything) on a black screen. Movie Maker won't really let you do that, so you can make it in Photoshop or Paint, import it into WMM and hold it for a couple of seconds. I've noticed a few anime trailers doing that in the past.
