After reading the story about the "Lost Episodes" of Dragon Ball GT, I started thinking how this was done with Dragon Ball and Bragon Ball Z in a roundabout way.
I originally discovered the Dragon Ball series from a reference/flashback made in Dragon Ball Z. So, I thought I would ask;
"What references, flashbacks, etc. made you realize there was something before DBZ?"
For me, it was when Kuririn saw Piccolo hovering in the air after Raditz had kidnapped Gohan. Everyone seemed to have known him from the past, so I thought I had caught DBZ in the middle of it's run instead of at the beginning.
Then I thought like with some of the older anime, DBZ was the type of show where characters would appear with ties and histories with other characters as if the viewer would know all this (like the Giant Robo OVA or Babel II).
However when Piccolo said something about the moon being back during his training with Gohan and everyone training at Kami's lookout, I began to realize something was missing. After checking some of the WebTV newsgroups, I discovered the missing 153 episodes of Dragon Ball.

I think this would've worked out better in 'general discussion'
but anyway, I think I actually started with DragonBall.

I happened to order a fansub wayyyy back during DBZ's first T.V. run and I noticed that the episodes I got were of a younger Goku and Yajirobe looking for the Ultra Divine Holy Water. The animation was different and I was confused. Oh! DBZ is a Sequel?!

When I was first getting into DBZ (During the first run on UK TV... so back around 98/99) I looked for some info on it and found a website that had "saga lists". These included the DB sagas and I remember going "Oh! So that's why everyone meeting on the Island were so chatty about the past! There actually is a past!"
I printed them off back then to read in bed and recently found them... they are horrible and inaccurate... Oh well.
Er.... No.

I saw the original DB's first season on YTV. I remember not liking it at first but it was on so much that I knew all the characters.
When DBZ first started I thought Goku looked familiar but when they all met up on Master Roshi's island I was like, holy cow it's the same characters all grown up! Although after only seeing the Pilaf portion of DB I had no idea who Piccolo or Kuririn were.

I got my first real exposure to Dragonball from episode one on Cartoon network. But I did know it was a sequel to the original Dragonball although I had no idea what had happened in it.
I was very happy when they aired the original on CN. I had some friend who dismissed it without watching it because it was old and we already had Z. They really missed out. I wish CN would start to re-air DB.

Well, I was first exposed to DBZ and after a bit of net research, I found that DBZ was a sequel.

It was funny how i started my addiction to DBZ. I used to make fun of my brother-in-law for watching cartoons, but one day he just gave me episodes 73 to 122 on vhs. I was hooked and had to see more
