I first saw the show in Castilian Spanish. Since then I've seen it in:

Castilian Spanish: My native language. This dub has many good memories tied to it!

Catalan: Saw it when I was in Barcelona. My cousins adore this dub!

German: Saw it on RTL on the Satellite service while studying in Spain.

Mexican Spanish: Saw it on Telemundo and later on on the UUC's

English: Original Ocean dub, and FUNi dub thereafter. Saw the International English dub later on online.

Cantonese: Some of my subbed episodes had Cantonese dilogue.

Japanese: From the fansub days and the FUNi DVDs

I obviously prefer the original Japanese.

Bear in mind that not everyone lives in the US or knows about FUNI's releases

As for me, I started with the English dub (which changed to the Ocean dub during the Android Saga). I 've seen the Japanese DBZ episodes up to the Cell saga and I'm currently watching DB in Japanese. As for which one I prefer? I 'd say I like them both equally with a slight leaning towards the JP version.

I got started with Ocean and didn't see the sub until my 6th? year of fandom, but I've come to love it so much more. I thought a lot of the voices were really weird at first (and I didn't think I would get used to watching in Japanese), but now I can't picture the characters without them.

I still like the dub (though I've always hated some of the voices-- Bulma, Yamcha, Daimao, Pan, Ocean Tenshinhan), but I very much prefer the original.

Well you know me... I seem to cut against the grain around here.

Actually script wise I prefer the Japanese original. It just all makes sense... I'm used to watching movies with subtitles so I very much enjoy watching the original show with subtitles. The current translations are professionally done so I know I'm getting as close the original as I can get. However I still cannot shake the Funi cast. I never warmed up to the original Ocean dub as much as the current one. Yes they have their faults but I like the current cast for the most part and enjoy that version the most. One day I geuss I will become more comfortable listening to the original cast but I'm a bit ethnocentric since I can relate to the characters more if it's in my own language. Not to say I don't like Japanese... it's a beautiful language. So really I'm sitting on the fence between the original cast with subtitles and the FUNI dub uncut.

Japanese. English subtitles don't matter anymore because, well, I've seen every episode so many times, I already know WTF is going on.

Japanese. I thought I was a casual fan when I first started watching DBZ on Toonami, until I watched my first episode in Japanese (via crappy bootleg VHS ). All it took was one episode, and that was it.

I do not see how some people prefer the dub over the Japanese. The dub voices for funimation were irritating at times to listen to. Like I hate how they do the voices for when the characters scream. It's because of that that people bags on the grunting and powering up stuff. Ocean dub voices were greater than I realized when I look back.

The Japanese version made me appreciate the series more. But I will say it was hard for me to believe what Goku's voice sounded like in Japanese the first time I saw it.

Well thanks. (Glad to see someone appreciates it at least. The folks in IRC were accusing me of "feeding the troll," but c'mon...18, a troll? I just don't think the guy has it in him. :P)

But yeah, on-topic, I started with the English DBZ right in the middle of the first Namek filler airing on Cartoon Network. It must have been about 4th or 5th grade, because I remember my friend telling me about it so I gave it a watch per his recommendation. Despite being confused at first, I grew to like it quite a bit and was watching the show regularly after school.

In fact, it was what got me watching Toonami in general. I have a lot of fond memories of their broadcasts, from DBZ20XL (I actually thought this was the title for some time -_-) to the New Year's Eve-il marathon of the "Garlic Junior Mini-series."

It wasn't until much later that I found out about all the edits on Psaro's DBZ:Uncensored web site. I don't really recall what the process was from then onward, but I eventually shaped into something of a purist. I wanted to see the entire series in its original format, without any changes.

My first step in that direction started with my receiving of the "Uncut" Frieza Saga on VHS for Christmas one year. I was all-set for blood and swearing and general kick-assery. One can imagine how much my excitement died upon learning that, not only was the dialogue only slighty different from the edited version, but what FUNi attributed to the Freeza Saga didn't include anything from the separately-packaged "Namek Saga," which I (and any other sane kid at my age) would have assumed was the same damn thing.

After going through that disappointment and segwaying into the digital millenium, I concluded that from then on out I would only buy the bilingual DVDs. Somewhere in-between, I had caught glimpses of the International Channel's airings, but I didn't watch them sequentially and they came on late at night so it was hard to follow them. It wasn't until I bought the "Fusion" and "Kid Buu" Saga boxed sets that my interest in the Japanese versions increased tenfold, because it really was just a completely different experience.

After that, I stuck with the Japanese. Though I had known about most of tho changes by then, the voices themselves were just so much better. Boo didn't sound like a child. There was no "Hercule." It was easier to watch without laughing at. I then thought I'd get the entire series that way.

Of course, my mind would change yet again, since FUNimation recently made it impossible to respectfully do so. And here I am now, in 2007, actually going after the Dragon Boxes I had really only dreamed of getting back when they were first released in 2003. I still like the English version for what it's worth (something I can understand without reading; what I grew up with; and of course, for its comedic value) but it isn't as big of a priority for me anymore.

I started out with the episodes of the arrival of Raditz, English Ocean (one of the greatest saga ever). This dub was fantastic, I was dissapointed when the cast changed but I grew to like it too. Around this time I was also introduced to the original which I concluded to be the best, but hearing the Ocean cast was just about as good. These days I would probably enjoy the dub if it didn't have so much christopher sabat and proper dialogue.

I chose to watch Db in Japanese first and I don't regret it. Often people like most what they were introduced with, just like how one scene can be dissapointing if with another dub you though the background music was memorial.

Actually I tend to think of Freeza is asexual. But it can't be proven I guess.

I prefer the dub with Japanese BGM. Best of both worlds.

If the Japanese dub was in 5.1, I would be compelled to listen to it. I don't even watch the dub with stereo music because the 5.1 mocks me to listen to it instead.
