Fan Made Dragon Box Project

Post by DemonRin » Sun Jun 26, 2016 1:32 am

Heylo.

Wanted to share something real quick I've been working on that's finally yielding some tangible results!

So, like most, I was happy when FUNimation announced the Dragon Box Z release, and was hoping we'd get more! The Movies.... the original DB... anything.... so I held off buying the Blue Bricks despite the picture quality being acceptable on them since.... well, I didn't wanna double-dip if Funi was just gonna do a release of a nicer Dragon Box set with all the extras and what have you, so I waited.... and then nothing happened.

So I got tired of waiting, bit the bullet, and ordered the Blue Bricks on an Amazon Sale but it just didn't feel right having them next to the Dragon Boxes on my shelf, so I decided to do something about it.

I waited to share until I actually had real work done so it's clear this isn't just some half-finished project, It's damn near done actually!
(Spoiler'd for images being kinda big)

The individual DVD Boxes are clear and will also have art that goes on the inside under where the discs rest, tho that hasn't been printed yet, here's what it looks like:

The Box set casing itself is put together, but I still haven't printed out the art yet. That'll be printed on nice glossy paper and a spray adhesive will be used to attach it.

Even the Discs are getting new labels, slapping them right over the FUNi Blue Brick discs!

Despite not being done, it already looks pretty slick on the shelf right next to the FUNi Dragon Box Zs!

The goal was parity with the FUNi Dragon Boxes, and by that, I mean it was obvious they based the design of these boxes off of the Japanese ones, with a bunch of little modifications here and there, so I followed suit. Wanted them to look as professional as possible.

Wanted to share these for honest criticism from other Dragon Ball fans. I wanna know what folks think and if I should change or update anything. :)
Also, I do want to ask for a tad bit of help if I may.

Does anyone know if there exists online somewhere, a decently hi-res scan of this:

I mean the art on the left side. Just like the Japanese one, my seventh Disc box has only one side taken up, so I'm struggling with what to put there, and this is the ONLY piece of Dragon Box art I can't find a hi-res version of out on the net.....

Also, Hell, Scans of the Dragon Book so I could re-create it would be nice too, but I doubt that one's happening lol.

Looks -excellent- and your progress is really impressive. I love custom DVD cases & boxes, I've been meaning to do my own for quite some time but can't settle on a design.

What's the box made out of? Chipboard?

Thankya! :D :D

Yes, the casing is made out of chipboard with Masking tape holding it together right now for the initial design, tho Super Glue will be used to reinforce it before the artwork goes on.

I'd be really interested to know what kind of paper & adhesive you end up using -- I've tried stuff like this with HP glossy brochure paper but I feel like that's too photo paper-like, slightly sticky to the touch. I've also tried matte photo paper but it's a bit dull-looking on the finished product.

My sister is a teacher and she has access to this glossy paper that isn't photo paper levels of glossy. It has a clearly different consistency and that's what we're using as well as the Laser printer at her school for the cleanest possible look.

I'm not sure what it's called, but I'll ask her and see if we can find out what kind it is.

I'm really impressed with your work! I wouldn't know you created it if I hadn't read the details. Now I want an equivalent to that. :D

How are you going to handle GT (if you are going to handle GT)? the GT singles have NEPs, but the Green Bricks have original Japanese music as an option for the dub. So basically singles are better for Japanese audio track and green bricks are better for English)

Not a fan of GT TBH, so no real plans to do that at moment, but If I were to do it, I'd get the FUNi "Complete Collection" and use the discs from that. The singles might be better, but tracking them down seems like it'd be harder/more expensive.
