Because, as we all know, Pre-Fruits Basket Funimation could be trusted with correct pronounciations and spellings!

If I'm reading that right, it sounds to me, he pronounced it the way we in Danmark pronounce Bulma.
McFarland was the voice of Oolong, right?

Hey, could be worse. Goku could be Zero, Bulma could be Lena, Yamucha could be Zedaki, Kuririn could be Bongo, Muten Roshi could be Master Roshi... Oh, wait. lol

Hm, this is all thought-provoking. I never put any thought into her name like that.

It was (presumably) Toriyama himself that messed up the spelling, not Funi.

I would argue that American English no longer uses the word bloomers, so changing the name is meaningless for U.S. adaptations. Then you'd always have that camp that would say "But the manga literally says 'Bulma' so Blooma is wrong!"

Bro, Karin-sama could be "Whiskers the Wonder Cat." And Piccolo could be "Uncle Motong."

I think as an April Fools joke, they should make it seem like another company acquired Dragon Ball and started a promotion about "The True Western Adaptation of Dragon Ball Z!" Goku is Mikey, Gohan is Joey, Bulma is Sally, Vegeta is Anthony, Piccolo is Gator-Man, and Raditz is Jason. Mikey gets a surprise visit from his brother, Jason, a test pilot who went up into space but came back down. He's now trying to get Mieky to join his quest to visit the moon, but Mikey doesn't want to leave his friends and family, who he loves very much and calls on the phone every day. Delight in sheer amazement as Mieky and the gang learns how to shoot laser beams from his hands. But wait! What's this? Jason's evil buddies Anthony and Bobo heard about the fight and are now coming to recruit Mikey for their space program! Are they willing to hurt the Earth if Mikey doesn't join them? Find out on this brand new series called: "Dragon Ball Evolution! The Animated Series!"

Regardless of Bulma's name, I can't wrap my head around "Bulla." I thought that in the DVDs, they'd call her by her actual name (like Mr. Satan), but nope... Bulla. Then again, I mean it is a stupid name, but that's not their call to make lol Or I guess it is.

It's not that big a deal. Hey Cure Dragon, do your friends still say "Pato Lucas" when speaking Spanish, or do they use his English name?

I'm glad you remembered I'm from Latin America! And yes, he is still El Pato Lucas. I wasnt trying to malign them for saying Boolma, in fact I do use Bulma too! But They tried to say it had bearing on the original pronounciation which is kind of not true hehe. Just because a Funimation Actor said so it aint necesarily true to the original canon.

BTW I dont really mind the Pato Lucas thing, although I do wish we went with Daffy.

Clearly you don't work in the performing arts because I assure you bloomers is a word intimately familiar to any female dancer.

That's fine, but I'm referring to colloquial usage. It's like you're saying Latin is very much a living language; ask any lawyer.

Do you have any idea how many Latin idioms are still alive in colloquial usage? Whether or not you think bloomers is somehow a dead word, there are very few people I'd wager who are not familiar with the term. It's not some obscure piece of jargon.

But no one primarily speaks Latin, so the analogy works. Now let me find a fresh pair of skivvies and then we'll talk obscurity.

No, the analogy does not work because you're talking about an individual word, not a language. And is skivvies supposed to be obscure? Because that's a term I've known since I was a little kid.

I feel like we're talking in circles, so I'll try to open this up a little. No matter how you cut it, bloomers is not a common word for pants, at least not as common as pants, shorts, tights, or even panties (I've tried to actually look for data on usage of the word, but am at a loss. But neither of us has presented usage data, so I suppose it doesn't matter). Now, bloomers is not a completely unused word, so I may have undercut its value a little.

So I guess the question is, do we try to fix Bulma's name so it better reflects an uncommon word, or do we leave the author's choice as is because as bad as it looks compared to bloomers, it may have been chosen out of whimsy?

Why not revive the word to make others aware of its real usage? I still see people on other communities becoming shocked that they never figured out Jhesse and Butta's name puns. :D Words "die" when they're neglected.
