How is Super's beginning supposed to be enjoyed?

Post by 404FILENOTFOUND » Sun Jul 17, 2016 3:36 am

Well I say beginning but I'm primarily speaking about the BoG and RoF arcs. There are three ways to enjoy them and that is through the movies, the series retellings and the manga but that leaves out the RoF arc.

Also, is the general consensus that Super is JUST the series airing right now or is Super is what the new portion of Dragon Ball is and the movies would suffice as a substitute for the retellings and wouldn't hurt somebody new going into the Champa arc through those without information being lost?

You can just watch the two movies and skip ahead to the Champa arc of Super if you want. I'd also watch the slice of life episodes because they're quite good.

The only thing you miss by not watching the Super adaptions is Captain Ginyu returns and steals one of the other villains body but then get killed by Vegeta.

If by "supposed to be" you mean "canon", then none is more "right" or "correct" than the other. It's all DB.

If you mean which one is the closest to the creator's vision and probably had the most time placed into its production, then without a doubt the films(Toriyama even wrote F himself). I can't believe there's anyone at this point who doubts that, with all the alarming circumstantial evidence, the films weren't adapted to simply fill time while Toriyama structured the Universe 6 arc. An announcement of a new series three months before it airs, literally the smallest scraps of information beforehand...

Watch the first two episode of Super, then watch the extended edition of Battle Of Gods, read Jaco The Galactic Patrolman, then watch episode 15 of Super, then watch Resurrection F and you're set.

If you go by the movies (then watch Dragon Ball Super starting by episode 28, which is the best way to enjoy the new content) don't forget to watch/read Dragon Ball: Yo!! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! too. An OVA/manga that is included thanks to Movie 14.

Just watch the two movies and then start watching super from episode 27
You can watch episodes 15 to 19 If you want to.
Those episodes take place between BoG and FnF.
After that you get the champa arc that is just a normal tournament, nothing special really, but you will enjoy all of the fights, all of them are pretty good and then you get to the Black Goku saga where we are currently.

Episodes 19 and 27 belong to Freeza arc.

When a Funimation Dub happens I'll be watching Super again from the beginning. Every episode.

The BOG arc is not only a dragged out version of its movie but for some reason they decided to cut out major character development that was in the movie so I'd definitely skip the 1st 14 episodes and watch the movie instead.

RF is the complete opposite, the movie's story felt very rushed and Freeza wasn't a threat to anyone compared to the arc so I'd watch that if I were you.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

IIRC, the proper "battle of gods" (ssg goku vs beerus) felt a bit too short in the movie and too long in the series (IHMO). Visual quality was better in the movie, of course, and the battle was more dynamic (even too much at times).

Maybe you could start watching the movies OR the series and then, after Frieza is gone, use your spare time to watch the other version without haste or excessive expectations.

Don't expect this as "best anime ever", or you will be disappointed. However the show can be enjoyed. :)

PS: PROBABLY the version I saw of BoG movie was not the "extended edition" someone mentioned above... I don't know its changes.

I do enjoy the portion of Dragon Ball that is "Super", though I can admit it is not in the same league as DB or Z, to me Super isn't JUST the show but the overall portion before the end of Z from return of son and friends to the latest episode in the show. I feel like the lists I've been recommended has given me a better experience of Super versus those that had to watch the retellings of the movies. Not exactly the cat's meow but its doing its job of making me entertained and interested in it (though I wish some things were done differently)

Once again thank you for the lists :D
