I highly doubt it. Super realistically needs at least a two month break for the schedule to be sorted out to a decent standard. A one week break won't change shit.

Too bad. If only it had better schedule it would be much more enjoyable. If it also used 90's character designs, DBZ soundtrack and better colors it would be a masterpiece in my eyes, because the story isn't as bad as some people say. Well, maybe I'm too blinded by nostalgia but I think that if something works you don't need to change it.

I'm still hoping Toei will be able to improve it (and it looks like it's happening, it's getting a lot a better lately) and maybe bring some DBZ old staff back at working.

I read someone from DBZ is coming back, one of the names I read is Naotoshi Shida and people here seem hyped he's coming back, can someone tell me exactly who he is?

Naotoshi Shida is one of Toei's best animators. He's famous for his incredibly detailed artwork and gratuitous camera movement. He used to work on Dragon Ball Z under Uchiyama of all people, though his current trademark style developed in the mid-2000s through his work on the Precure and One Piece series.

He's only provided key animation for modern Dragon Ball works three times (video games excluded), and so far has only done storyboards for Super. Here are those scenes:

I doubt they had nothing, they probably just didn't have a full sheet from Yamamuro until then. There's no way that episode was done in that short of a time, especially with the final outline being finished in February. It's also possible that that date is just when they printed all those sheets for Anime Expo.

Yeah, couldn't they have just worked on the other parts until then? But if 39 was animated in 3 weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if 47 was slightly more than that.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Oh man, that Battle of Gods cut is one of my favorites and his other works are outstanding too, it looks like he has worked only on movies for Dragon Ball though.
If he really is coming back and animating Super I expect to see great things if you say he is one of Toei's best.
It also looks like his art stays very on model which is something I like.

I mean yeah, 4 weeks is still an improvement over 3, but I just find it hard to believe that they were unable to start the episode until May 17th because they didn't have character designs. Even if that Character sheet wasn't actually finished until that date they could have still had some sketches from Yamamuro to work off of or even Toriyama's own drawning. I just find it hard to believe that they didn't have any character sheets until May 17th and they got everything on that day. I think that date is either just when those were printed for Anime Expo or what Yamamuro put the final touches on them, but not when they were handed to the animators.

Ah no, he worked on hundreds of episode; you can see his full credits here - http://www.animatorscorner.com/staff_profile/1582

It's just that Sakugabooru only accepts exceptional clips, which Shida only really had the chance to deliver on the movies.

Oh, and by the way, the kanji reads "Last modified" next to those dates on the character sheets, so there's no reason to believe they only had x amount of time for those episodes. More likely the rough designs were done way further back and those designs were just finalised for that date. Doubt it's anything significant. Could literally mean any aspect of that image.

So like I thought, that's just when he put the final touches on them, they likely had earlier versions to work off of before hand.

Wow thanks for the information, now I can't wait to see what Shida will do seeing as he has worked on many DB, DBZ and DBGT episodes.

One might think, but it all depends on whether or not the producer or production desk don't screw the saving grace up.

No, it's entirely possible. Shingeki no Kyojin Episode #7 was put together in just one month. Episode #24 only had a month and a half total, too. The fact that Tate Naoki and Higashide Futoshi keep popping up after so few episodes is because there are so few animators available to finish episodes in such a short time.

Episode 24 of super? Why did it look like shit then? Unless you're taking about Shingeki

Yes, but #7 of Attack on Titan involved four external companies for KA, and six more for 2nd KA. And well... #24 speaks for itself.

#47 of Super was a bog standard episode. No outsourcing at all and a perfectly reasonable staff size.

While it's certainly possible to complete an episode in such little time, there's no indication that that was the case with that episode. Everything points to the contrary, in fact.

Don't get me wrong, the schedule isn't in a good place, but regarding those sheets and that episode? Nah. There's nothing particularly out of the ordinary there.

The episodes after that? Sure.

I wouldnt consider Shida to be on-model. He has a different Shading Style from other animators, and exaggerates characters differently. he also gives them his own mouths, and even eye shape.

In other words he, like Naoki Tate does his own things with the character sheets.

Only Animators from Toei that I find do this a metric ton are Shida, Tate, and Tomita. (who often gets mistaken for Shida by a lot of OP fans.)

Trying to have a healthy discussion with them is a lost cause and not worth your time, because they just don't accept anything that isn't bashing Super.

I was really trying not to do this in this thread, but you had to come in here with your baseless post.
His post is certainly not baseless.
It's really the whole "nostalgia goggles" that got to me. The sentiment that people can't enjoy Super because they have this warped view of how amazing Dragonball Z was due to nostalgia is utter bullshit. Quite frankly, it's the other way around.
Anime Kitten wrote:saiyanvegetable:
Should I mention again that Super being "mediocre" is opinion only?

I didn't think so. Er, don't mind me. :?

I'm not going to discuss why it's mediocre in this thread, but this also another cancerous school of thought on this forum. It's not an "opinion", it's a fact - if you don't think so then you have a very limited understanding of storytelling, character building, production, and a lot of other narrative and production related concepts. And usually that comes down to lack of maturity or taste. (maturity in the sense that you have not been exposed good pieces of work or haven't had time to refine your tastes)

For instance, it can be your opinion that Beethoven and Bach are not for you, and you don't enjoy them. But to say that "they suck" or to take one of their symphonies and tell me its mediocre shows you have no basic understanding of music theory & composition and therefore your "opinion" really has no value whatsoever because you are basing it off of a place of ignorance.

To call Super mediocre, especially when set against the bar that its predecessor set as well as the bar that has been set by modern anime productions, is a vast understatement. If you don't understand this I encourage you to go out and explore other mediums of entertainment and expose yourself to works that are really good at tying in all the elements of the craft together to produce a solid piece of work.

Can you personally enjoy Super? Sure. But it's still a horrible show and I'd immedietely question your tastes. DBZ wasn't a masterpiece by any means, but let's not kid around here - it had a lot of things going for it in terms of a lot of elements that the craft of storytelling through a weekly animation series requires. But in terms of preference I'd absolutely understand why people would hate it and would never in a million years herald it as the holy grail of Anime/Manga. Super on the other hand, hasn't had any redeeming value or merit outside of maybe half an episode stitched together throughout the entire series. So no, it's not an opinion. But keep watching if you like - it worked for Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls. The only merit here is watching an obviously talented team keep a series alive on what seems to be a shoestring schedule and draconian supervisor who's either stopped giving a shit or just went senile.

I pretty much agree with saiyanvegetable. Not the best attitude tho.

And now on topic, so excited to see what Shida's going to do. His cut in BoG is the best in all of modern Dragon Ball.
