Yeah, the tracing isn't perfect. In fact, episode 5 has a lot of good examples of how iffy it can turn out when not handled well. Check out the slightly hazy line art in these scenes:

Way too smoothed out compared to what it should be.

I'm not gonna lie, I actually like Yamamuro's Black art.

It's obviously not perfect, but I like it more than a lot of his other recent stuff, though the top face in the face sheet looks pretty emotionless. His Trunks is okay too, but his Mai art is weird.

I liked those shots. Something about the variance in line thickness speaks to me.

I like them, too.

I'm just talking about how the line-work isn't crisp. The smoothing is too high so it looks like it was drawn with a soft brush in Photoshop or something.

Just a weird inconsistency with the rest of the episode.

The absence of the plastic-looking and "shiny" aspect of Yamamuro's design for Goku Black make a world of difference.

Not sure why people dislike the highlights. The uniform black looks too cartoony and lazy. It looks like someone drew the outline and just used the fill function in paint.

I only dislike the way they apply them. The lack of a correct light source and the big rectangles of white they put on faces are very distracting.

Yeah, I really hate those, I don't know when they started but I know they where on GT and also I think I saw them on the animated scenes of Chrono Trigger but I don't really know when those scenes were made.
I'm happy they aren't using those white triangles a lot in the series because they are horrible.

Well.. here in this shot of Goku SSJ3 they certainly used hightlights if i'm not wrong
Image
But certainly here the hightlights are well applied, I guess...

Those aren't really highlights though. The brightest color on his face is just about his normal skin color.

Goku Black has so far been the most well designed and consistently on model character in Dragon Ball Super, without a doubt. I can't think of one instance were he appeared off-model, even in the slightest.

They'res probably a wonky far away shot out there but when it matters he always looks so good!!!

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

I suppose this isn't technically 100% relevant to Super, but I think it has its place here.

As I'm sure you've probably ascertained from my incessant pining over the man, Naoki Tate is of course my favourite animator, and his work on Super has received a lot of praise from me over the past year.

I spent a good part of today going through his work on Z and picking out some screenshots that I thought some of you might be interested in. It definitely helps you see his style develop into what it is today.
Image
Note that he worked under Shimanuki so you'll see quite a lot of his traits seeping into the above drawings. Regardless, he's still very easy to spot.

It's interesting to see that his work on the original Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans is the most reminiscent of his current work. It's funny, even Naotoshi Shida who didn't develop his signature style until over a decade later is easily recognisable in this special.

But yes, it's really cool to see how Tate these days retains many of his traits from back in the day, except you're now seeing it broken down into simpler, and in some cases, more exaggerated designs than before -- with a dash of Yamamuro, too.
Image
Those trademark thick eyebrows certainly haven't gone anywhere. I also absolutely adore that he's one of the few animators who still draws the characters with longer faces. Really awesome stuff.

Anyway, just a fun little time-waster. Hope it helps you recognise his work better across both shows.

I like those thick eyebrows too. It really fits the style of Dragon Ball. Thanks for sharing that! He might be my favorite too (if I got into it to tell them apart).

Oh shit, Ajay! When did you become a mod? I just noticed.

Naoki Tate is definitely my favourite animator in Super. Something about the way Tate animates feels so Hosoda-esque. His cut in Episode 26 with Goku and Freeza was so good. I also love what he brought to Episode 38. From small details like Vegeta falling on the ground to Goku jumping around Hit, trying to find a way to counter Hit's Time-Leap and attack him while he's open. Considering Super's tight time constraints that animators are given to create an episode, it's pretty incredible to see an episode like 38 with that much great animation. Tate definitely Tate'd that time.

It sucks that a lot of fans of the series don't like his work due to his off-model art.

Seeing that makes me think Naoki Tate would be better as a key animator than a supervisor.

I really love his job in Super, love tose fluid scenes he makes but If I have to choose my favourite, I'd say Karasawa Yuichi, all of his episodes were really really great, on-model and also fluid, I enjoy his fights, the last one (Goku vs Black) was a little short but was so good, it's a shame that Tate and Karasawa don't do their episodes alone like Yashima
