Where did all the talking animals go?

In Dragonball, the world was filled with animals that could talk and act like humans yet by Dragonball Z they all disappeared except for Oolong, Puar, Karin and Master Roshi's turtle. Where did all the talking animals go?

Actually, the talking animals were still present during DragonBall Z, the only difference is that they are not shown as frequently.

Shenlong and Porunga would still be considered talking animals, would they? o__O

EDIT: That one earlier DBZ episode where Gohan deals with those rogue kids; Wasn't there an animal kid in that group?
