Lost original Broadcast Audio?

Post by orangebrick94 » Tue Jul 26, 2016 9:49 am

According to the Lost Media Wiki Dragonball and Dragonball Z has never had it's original audio used on Home Video releases due to Toei wiping out the audio masters, which would explain the low mono sound for the Japanese language Track. According to the Wiki A lot of people have the audio uploaded to Youtube and have different comparisons comparing the two versions. What I was wondering was does anybody else have any more info on this topic? I find incredibly intriguing. Forgive me if there is already a thread about this.

Ooft, yeah. There's been quite a lot of conversation about this over the years. If you pop "Broadcast Audio" into the forum's search bar, you'll find a number of threads detailing the specifics in great detail.

The basic rundown is something like this:
  • Toei discards master tapes due to space concerns and home video not really being a big thing in Japan back then.
  • Fans learn of this and begin tracking down VHS recordings from the original broadcast.
  • Fans like Kei17 of this forum manage to accumulate the entire run of DB, Z, and GT, and offer it up to Toei in hopes of release.
  • Toei says they're not interested.
  • The audio is then offered to Chris Sabat of FUNimation who agrees to take it, but can't promise the company will be allowed to use it.
As it currently stands, I don't believe the audio was ever sent to Sabat in the end, so it's all at a total stand still.

A little fun fact: it does appear that Toei still has the original audio for GT as it was broadcast on Animax in its full glory not that long ago. For some strange reason it was never used on their Dragon Box release, though.

You can find bits and pieces of the audio online from back when broadcast audio owners were more than happy to share things in confidence. Unfortunately, the fact that the audio is out there is also a big reason as to why it isn't being handed out anymore. The idea is that companies are probably not going to be interested in taking audio that's been featured in numerous illegal releases online. It's all kept behind closed doors as negotiations with various companies continue.

I only mention that because it's become a bit of a trend for some users to find out about the existence of the audio, only to then hound the owners for copies of the recordings. Definitely not the best thing to do.
