I just want to point out the fact that Zamasu is the only kaioshin without black eyes.... I think. Haha

Does the name "zamasu" mean anything?

And I feel it's a bit early to appreciate the character when he has just debuted.
"Don't take pleasure in destruction!" / "I will not let you destroy my world!"
A true hero goes beyond not the limits of power, but the limits that divide countries and people.

"Zamasu" is an archaic Japanese verb meaning "to be".

"Gowasu" is another word for "to be", also.

Name puns are fun.

Will reserve judgement on the character since we have laughably little information - I like the direction so far, though.

Side point: do you think the dub will still call Kaioshin "supreme Kai"? Basically "Supreme World" which makes no sense...

I hope the stupid arbitrary name changes get better as the dub faithfulness improves a la DBKai... Maybe it'll be better if they ever dub the Boo arc or Super.

Buu Kai is already dubbed. It has other reasons than that for not airing. I think the Dragon Ball Kai section would be able to explain this further.
Also, I believe it would be the Sacred World of the Kais.

What? "Kaioshin"? Pretty sure it's:
"Kai" - world
"o" - king
"shin" - core, true or similar

no?

Oh, sorry, I thought you were talking about the Kaioshin Realm, not the Supreme Kai himself. Must have misread. My bad.
I thought Shin in Kaioshin meant God, though.

It might. I've read "god" and "core" as translations. I'm not a japanese speaker, so I'm no authority. I know enough to know know that "supreme Kai" isn't close, though.

In this case, the kanji being used for "shin" is indeed "god". "Core" or "true" would derive from a different kanji that can also be pronounced "shin".

Zamasu appreciation...while I can agree with the sentiment that it's a bit premature, I also feel myself being instantly drawn to this character. We've seen plenty of the bad-guy-turns-good scenario in Dragon Ball, but not someone turning bad, as far as I can recall. Really enjoying his descent into an "all mortals are scum!" mentality. There's still a good amount of mystery surrounding him and how he's involved in the creation of Black. It could all go to shit if things aren't explained well, but at this point I'm optimistic and eager to find out more about Black and Zamasu, both of whom are shaping up to be much more interesting characters than they have any right to be (I mean, come on, another pussy Kaioushin and an evil Gokuu? Totally sounds like lame fanfiction, right? :P )

-Bump into this thread 2 months later-

I will take a part of my comment in another thread:
Zamasu is an amazing villain and I don't know how Toriyama/Toei will top this. I'm loving his Narcissism too.
He's also the first one to murder Goku. Both times Goku died (against Raditz and Cell) before was because he decided to sacrifice himself.
In the Future he died because of his heart disease, but in that timeline Zamasu was the one to give him the final blow. And to make it darker the last thing FT Bulma, Chichi and Goten from that timeline saw, was the body of her best friend/husband/dad killing them. That is terribly dark, when you think about it!
I'm loving his character more and more. There are more things I could say about him, but let's leave it to the final judgment.
So far, Toriyama/Toei still didn't drop the ball and he became my second favourite villain from this franchise, right behind Freeza-sama.

Let's see if he keeps that spot.

Zamasu is not the best thing in super, but is really cool. Among the new characters, for now it is definitely the best after Beerus, Whis and Hit.

I agree with you in that Zamasu is the first villain whom we've seen to have a bona fide justification for becoming a murderous psychopath. He's very sadistic in the process for no explicable reason whatsoever, but it's still a step up compared to the one-dimensional "evil for nothing" characters who existed all throughout the original manga. I actually questioned if I was watching Dragon Ball for a moment when Zamasu and Black got into that philosophical debate with Trunks over right & wrong. Hopefully this level of storytelling doesn't evaporate when the arc finishes because the series does surprisingly well with the older macabre atmosphere in spite of its overall whimsical simplicity. Zamasu is very similar to what I think Beerus could have been with a more serious perspective taken of what his actions entail.

Let's be serious, Zamasu is about as developed as this guy:

Truth be told, this guy actually has better reasoning for his motives. Zamasu wants humans dead just cause...

I still like Black though... who's Zamasu... so... appreciation? =D

Not just cause, he was really doubtful, not not murderous when he first appeared, he voiced his concerns as to "Why humans need to be protected" then he slowly developed his murderous intent until he finally said "Evil must be punished". So, yeah, that's development, atleast on dbz villain standards.

Not to mention all 3 Zamasu emcompass everything about him, he's an entity thousands of times more dangerous, misterious and interesting than anything before him.

Honestly, I feel the character lacks substance and is pretty bland. I mean, you can say the same about every DBZ villain, but this one is supposed to be complex. Frieza's presence in the Namek saga made him more interesting. Cell's hunt for the androids made him more interesting too.

He didn't really develop much either. Goku's existence just kind of made him take action he already wanted to the minute he appears on-screen for the first time. This is reinforced in the latest episode, where he's quick to join Black. If he was merely concerned at first, he wouldn't have quickly shook hands with Black and hugged him. He was an evil, conniving linear villain from the start.

I like the character, but I feel he's wasted potential too.

Besides Boros accepting Saitama as his sensei, I don't remember the word "development" existing in One Punch Man.
