I think the biggest problem is time. With the human characters you watched as they got replaced gradually and this happened the first time you watched the show. But it's been years since most people first watched dragonBall. Characters like Gohan and Piccolo defined the series to many of us because they were a big part of the ssries when it ended. They were still there on the many repeated watches we did also. Time and repeated watches have cemented the idea of them being defining parts of the show. You could argue the merchandise really has kept coming, along with the video games which feature a wide variety of characters. 2. Goku's ridiculous and exaggerated "I WANT TO FIGHT!!!! TRAIN!!!" act is obviously fake.

4. Goku let Vegeta and Frieza escape so that they could destroy Earth. Not like he gave a fuck.

The entire series he was portrayed as a guy with good intentions who ends up with bad results. I could definitely see Goku in an antagonistic role, but evil?
