Goku's harsh words to Gohan

Goku's harsh words to Gohan

Post by Anonymous Friend » Tue Mar 06, 2007 12:35 am

I was watch my copy of the newly released set. I tend to watch many of my programs with the closed caption or sub-titles on. So, while listening to the dub but reading the sub-titles I happen to see Goku some rather strong term with his son, trying to tell him to fight against Vegeta. I also saw Krillin calling Gohan a stupid twit at one point.

My question: Is this something that happens to Gohan when he starts acting like a pansy or is this the only time?

I actually noticed that too, but I paid it no attention because I thought it was a mistranslation or I was reading the wrong subtitle track. I was watching Spain's DVD's. Both Krillin and Goku seemed to be really angry at Gohan for being afraid, calling him "estupido" which means stupid, obviously. I think I even remember Krillin going as far as calling Gohan "mierda", which means shit.

That's what I first thought but everyone says the the dude who translates for FUNi has his stuff together and is probably the only good thing FUNi has going for itself.

Yea Steve Simmons. He posts as Daimao on this very forum, and was even in one of the podcasts. Sounds like a cool guy.

I'm not sure who does the translations for Spain, and that's only because I've been too damn lazy to check. If I remember when I get back home I'll dig around those DVD's.

Well, Goku and Piccolo did call him a coward because he was too busy being afraid to fight.

Yeah, Gohan gets chewed out a bit for freezing up. Had it coming.

I was surprised at this as well, Goku called Gohan a "jackass" when he wouldn't fight Vegeta. Was that a closest thing to it in English thing, or did Goku really call his son a jackass for not wanting to fight?

I mean I trust Simmons and everything, but that really took me by surprise.
Er.... No.

I'm assuming that was バカヤロー (bakayarou), because that's usually translated into "dumbass", "jackass", "moron", or "damned fool" by Mr. Simmons, if I remember correctly. Yeah, it's not a nice word to say to someone, in the least. :)

Besides, Goku is mountain-folk. He has some semblance of manners, but he's no Mr. Dad.

I think Goku had some "heated" words with Gohan when he went SSJ on Namek and told Gohan to leave. Or was that a fansub translation? I forget.

They weren't all that "harsh" as they were said in a harsh tone.

It was just a little strange to me to have Goku cursing out his son.

Well, it was either curse out your kid, or the Earth is destroyed, so...

I saw the ENTIRE season, with the episode, but I don't remember hearing Goku FORCING Gohan to fight Vegeta, just Piccolo.

My mom has cursed me out something fierce on many many occasions. Up until now I've only seen and heard the Dub dialog. This is the first time I've ever read Mr. Simmons' dialog.

The Dub always did shy away from Goku's harshness to Gohan. The Movie 9 dialogue is rather...pathetic.

One of my favorite bits of dialogue is this scene. It stresses the urgency of the whole scene, and it sort of infers that Goku knows that Gohan is incredibly strong and is frustrated when he sees how afraid he is.

The dub, however, makes him the loving dad. Bah.

Could you give me an idea of what he says? I don't have the Funi release of movie 9.

Goku: "Wake up...the world is depending on you, Gohan. Believe in yourself, son, unleash your true power. It's the only way..."

Gohan: "I'm my Father's SONNNNN!!"

I believe that's how it went.

That pansie deserves it. He almost let everyone down even in the Cell games. :x
