While I do like all of the above answers, maybe it's super-existential and it doesn't actually exist in reality at all until it's summoned...? If nobody calls Kinto'un, is there a Kinto'un?

I kind of imagine it sort of just goes really high in the sky and follows the energy of Goku so that when/if he calls it will be there.

Call me crazy but it resembles the clouds around Snake Way... which if it is those clouds, then maybe Goku ate it by accident? But then again, Goten used it later on so I don't know if that theory holds well.

The bigger question is 'does the nimbus have sentience?' If so then it is aware of its actions and could it be pure of heart?
