DragonBall Z Filler Release?

Post by Zeroplus » Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:59 pm

Just wondered if anyone would rather have all the filer taken out of the future dvd releases or have an option where you could skip over the scene where there was filer, like a 'manga content filer-skip mode' like the marathon mode found in the re-mastered FUNi dvds?

Not sure how that would work out actually. Wouldn't there be some sort of problem with the Japanese track? Maybe some synch or editing issues?

I wouldn't want to skip all the filler. The filler scenes in the Saiyajin Saga pad things out nicely without making a mess of anything. While I do class the manga as being the ultimate version of DB, I'm not opposed to good filler. The only filler I would like to (and do) skip is the Garlic Jr. arc.

Well it's true that in some cases filler is needed to help pan out the story, and sometimes it is quite humorous, Goku and Piccolo getting their drivers license anyone? But honestly a lot of the filler is just throw away crap anyways, which I wouldn't miss.

I wouldn't be surprised if FUNimation gathered all of the filler, made some boxsets and called it "The DBZ That Should Have Never Existed!"[/lameness]

Fast forward past the parts you don't want to see. :)

I think you can program most DVD players to play only certain Titles and Chapters, kind of like a playlist. If the scenes were properly delimited it'd be possible to do this without creating a new DVD, though it'd be an exhaustive process.

Otherwise, you'd have to create a new DVD with a different/alternate play structure. It wouldn't necessarily mean chopping anything up, and could work very much like the Marathon and Story Mode features.

Not counting the Garlic Jr., Afterlife Tournament, and those arcs in between the Baba and 22nd Budokai, Everyone's revival and 23rd Budokai and last 5-6 eps of DB, it wouldn't work that well.

What's the point? Even I, the former hardass manga purist, thinks that one should just read the Manga if you only want to see...what's in the Manga. The art is better anyway 94% of the time. The only anime I would want to see following just the Manga exactly would be a redone "Ultimate DBZ" Anime. Alas, not likely to happen.

What's with all this "removing filler" segments resonating in these forums nowadays. Unlike some (& as much as I am a manga purist when it comes to DB), I actually like the filler in Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z. Some of the filler episodes pre-Vegeta arriving earth was some of the best stuff I've seen. It really delves a lot into Gohan's character. How about when Gohan spends time with Goku before the Cell Games ? Really nice stuff there. Don't get me wrong I know there's a good share of bad filler as well. Though if there's anything I dislike the most in Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z is the fact they extend the fights longer than they should be. Now that's annoying.

If we didn't have filler then well we'd be able to watch Dragonball in like 3 hours.

I'm surprised to actually see anyone defending the episodes about Gohan making friends with dinosaurs, robots and orphans. So... damn... repetitive.

I thought those were a waste of time as well.

How so? I thought it was nice to see something a little different prior the aftermath of the Saiyans arriving on Earth. I'd have to say I find your statement pretty ironic in the sense that Dragon Ball did set the basis for what is the Shonen archtype: fighting, fighting, fighting, training, etc., Now that's repetitive (but enjoyable nonetheless). I can see what you're saying, but it doesn't compensate for much when well...you'd probably end up with more stretched-out episodes of Goku & friends....fighting....& staring.

The robot episode is a classic and one of my favourites in the entire series. Have you seen it in Japanese?

I love the series as is. I wouldn't change anything.

(Besides, with DVDs, you can friggin' fast-forward anyway.)

What's the point in taking out the filler?

To make the series go by faster and more like the Manga.

The series will never be exactly like the manga no matter how much filler skipping one does, because as we both know, it's more an adaptation than straight carbon-copy. I mean, are you gonna cut out Dodoria killing Kargo and make it look like Freeza does it when he blows up a distant mountain? Gonna make crucial cuts to the Trunks special because Toei wanted Trunks' transformation more dramatic (which works better with the anime)? Or when Vegeta's transported from Namek to Earth, are we gonna fast-forward his brief encounter with Freeza and SSJ Goku to showing it looking like he's just blasting another mountain while he's moved? Hell, I haven't even brought up the SSJ2 differences. I sometimes wish some of you guys (I know you do at least, Duo) would consider the manga and anime as two separate canon/universes rather than the anime as a carbon-copy with removable filler, because it won't work that way IMO. We can all blame Toei for that.

I guess it depends on what filler is. I usually like filler episodes where the writers think of new stories/content that doesn't contradict the main storyline. I can understand in taking out the filler that occurs/interferes with the main storyline, like Vegeta seeing Goku as a Super Saiyan or fighting Gohan on Planet Earth prior Namek's destruction. Also just the generally tedious staring contests & fight drags that the series is infamous for.
