That's understandable, it's the same style, but far more on model.

Maybe Goku and Vegeta play Rock Paper Scissors on who gets to fight Black and Goku loses.
I thought that at first too, but we know Goku is the one to fight Black.

I can't believe I forgot Goku was gonna fight that fast. :D

But I wonder if these breaks actually help the schedule for upcoming episodes. I know that in the episode with Zamasu vs Goku they did up the brightness in some scenes and change a hand, do these breaks give them actual time to polish and give more extravagant looking animation? All I can remember looking better is the coloring in some scenes.

I would assume the improvements brought on by these weeks off wouldn't be immediately felt and instead would just improve the schedule for future episodes. I wouldn't be surprised if the episodes immediately following a break were finished during the week off and the animators just moved on to their next thing instead of working on it an extra week. I'm not really basing that on anything, but none of the episodes after a break have felt like they had an extra week of animation, in fact in the most recent two breaks it was the second episode after the break that seemed like they had more time (episodes 36 and 54).

Losing a game of janken is the only scenario I can picture leading to that image.

Unless Goku gets a good look at Black's hands and is shocked to realize they have identical fingerprints!

Ouch, what happened to his neck? For some reason this feels really painful to me.

Looks normal to me, shading is a bit odd, but everything is drawn pretty normally.
Man I'm really excited for next week's episode, from the outside it really seems like everything is aligning for it to be the best looking episode of Super yet. Hopefully in this large amount of weeks since his last episode Tate was actually able to work on the episode and wasn't just sitting on his hands waiting for a storyboard. It'll be interesting to see what Manabe brings to the episode as well.
I'm honestly surprised that Toei hasn't snatched Manabe up as a regular supervisor yet, he isn't currently doing any supervising on any other shows.

I hope this next episode coming up has the potential to be one of the best animated DB episodes. Because there will probably be only a little bit of fighting, I think that most effort will be put into the transformation. It feels like a lot of factors are lining up nicely, so I hope something special happens.

Today's episode ends with them in the future, so I imagine most of the second half of next week's episode will be action with the first half being set up.

Out of boredom I decided to try to make a few more edits to the shot from the NEP that bothered me.

If you open them in separate tabs, you can see that Goku's cheek (our right) was adjusted.

I see, I also noticed near the end of the right eye brow has been covered with hair

Do you mean in both, or just in the third picture?

This episode was strange, the parts that looked good looked really good and the rest looked really weird and it kept going back and forth.

But holy shit that NEP, it looked awesome! I hope Fuji TV's website has a full version of it!

Episode 55

Image

Animation Supervisors:
Seizo Toma & Kaoru Takamura

Key Animators:
Toma Seizo Horii Nobuo Higashide Futoshi Hong Beom-seok Kato Yoshitaka TAP

2nd Key Animator
Mura Shuntaro Tu Yeong-chaek A-Line

--

Pretty bad looking, but expected considering who was behind it. Seemed like even the key animators they were given were pretty horrendous, too. You know, aside from our man Higashide! I swear Kitano provided uncredited KA on this episode?!

That said, we saw the return of Toma's thick line-art, so that was nice. The storyboard was also fantastic, and pretty much carried the visuals in spite of the animation.
