Super Supervisors - Ep #2 - Naoki Tate

Probably the biggest video project I've ever completed. The timeline was ridiculous!

Took me 13 hours of straight editing yesterday to get it done. Gathering all the relevant examples took forever.

I hope it was worth it! Kinda dreading the comments...
If this doesn't clear some unwarranted Tate hate (esp for ep 5) then nothing will.

Honestly most of 55 looked pretty good, but I'm trying to figure something out and I'd love it if you chimed in Ajay. Toma is listed as the first supervisor and the first animator and the majority of the episode looks like this, and honestly this all looks pretty great, definitely the best that Toma has been since his return. However, there are two distinct(not so great) styles that look similar to a few shots in episode 50 and I don't know who they are. The first is the second most common style in episode 55, this, it has very strange eyes and a weird roundness, this style reminded me of a few similar shots from episode 50 like this one. The second supervisor on both episodes 50 and 55 is Takamura Kaoru, which leads me to believe this style is his. The next style has really bad noses, but luckily was only present for a short time, and that style was this one, which reminds me somewhat of this from 50. Obivously it's not exact, in this shot the neck is thinner, the eyes rounder at the bottom and the nose has a curve, but the angle of the nose reminded me of this third style from 55. Outside of Higashide and the second supervisor only 2 animators on this episode that also worked on 50 where, Hong Beom-seok and Kato Yoshitaka. I'm kinda tempted to skim through the other episodes these two have worked on to see if I can find anything similar. There was also one other animator on this episode, but he didn't work on episode 50, so maybe he was responsible for the third style if it wasn't one of the other two.

Partly random but can any share some pans from Super involving SSG/SSGSS or Goku and Vegeta in there "F" outfits?

(Figured I'd ask in this thread instead of resurrecting the old pan thread from last year).

-Episode 55-

Looks like they change the colors for Kaioshin's world scenes now. Every scene in there looks brighter.
I thought it was something they only did for Universe 10 Kaioshin's world to make it feel different, but doesn't seem to be that way. Strange...

-Episode 56-

Next week is the definition of Hype. Everything looks so beautiful!
With all the time Tate had, I expect something memorable.

FT Trunks running with his sword towards Black while he's descending the skies in episode 47, is by far one of my favourite fight scenes in Super.
The sense of perspective in that scene was mind blowing.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

This is Tate, so I wouldn't base anything on that shot. Remind me to look into these properly at some point down the line; I'm a little burnt out on analysing styles after working on that video. I will absolutely answer this properly at some point (probably tomorrow)! Wes is pretty in tune with Toma's style, so it might be worth asking him in the mean time. He did a whole video on him, so he probably has a better idea than me. Main traits I remember are pointy chins and sharp angles everywhere.

Heh, they weren't that bad. Made a conscious decision not to make any pronunciations too forced, since really, these videos are supposed to appeal to a wide audience, and I'd rather not disrupt that idea with "Hoh-soh-dah" instead of my beautiful shitty accent's "Hoe-suh-dah".

Glad you liked it though!

I you sure that's Tate? It looks a lot dumpier than Tate's work to me. Also I don't know who Wes is.

GREAT job! You clearly put a lot of effort into this video, and it was sure worth it. Will use this video as a reply to a lot of people for sure.

I'm Wes. :P I might do a little research myself to see if I can help out the search, but I can at least confirm that a lot of the episode is definitely Toma, and pretty much all of the better images ArchedThunder linked to look like him. I'm not sure who the other styles would be, but they do look different to me. Some of them could be rushed Toma, but you're definitely right that the noses look too small and off to be his.

Yeah, 100%. It's the one dialogue cut he did in the episode. Here's the rest of the Tate drawings from the scene:

Hey, my Kanzenshuu name is weird to me now too. :P

Not to go too off topic, but this drawing of Vegeta is really lovely despite being able to tell that it's a little rushed.

Harry price on twitter posted these. Same thing happened on episode #53, which came after break.Minor changes of course, but the breaks do help to add more polish or detail to things/final touches.

Stellar once again.

Not watching much anime, it's a shame to see how good Tate's cuts in other projects look compared to his work in Super. His later One Piece material is incredible. He's already my favorite supervisor on Super, and has created some incredible cuts for it, but it's a shame to see how much better he could be under different conditions (better schedule, better character models).

It was also nice to get a timeline of his work that so clearly highlighted his different periods and influences. I would never have connected his current work to the cuts from Z you included, which -- while certainly nicer than average -- didn't much deviate from the norm nor feature the most fluid movement of the series. Goku vs. Hit and Goku vs. Freeza are some of my favorite bits of animation in the franchise, though unfortunately they're hardly representative of the series as a whole.

At any rate, keep being the best Dragon Ball content on YouTube. Your videos are the only ones I've ever seen on it that provide information I couldn't get from Kanzenshuu alone.

Wow Ajay. I was expecting to be bored half way but I watched the whole video. It was incredible.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Not very good animated, aside of some scenes like Zamasu and the babarian and Goku's visit to Zeno-sama's place, but man, the storyboard of this episode was beautiful. It made it a lot easier to watch.

Also, am I the only one who loved this expression/face of Vegeta and the way he look the entire place just with his eyes?
Image
Idk, maybe is not something amazing, but that "what is happening" face got me off guard and I loved it. It gives a mysterious thing to the scene.

NEP looks awesome!! Let's hope for the best.

This one felt like toward the end they just said "You know what? fuck it! Let's just work on the next one and make that shit pretty AF"

Like WoW there were some broadcast episode 5 tier faces and art there. and they barely moved too. talk about not pretty. In the end though, it was a fine episode.

I just realized that Yashima is going to have a ridiculous number of weeks for his next episode compared to what he usually gets. Anyone wanna guess who will be doing the next couple episodes after 57?
I'ma guess;
58-Onishi
59-Yashima
60-Ishikawa
61-Shimanuki
Who knows though, maybe we'll see someone new handle an episode or even one of the secondary supervisors step up. It'd be awesome if Hakamada Yuuji supervised an episode, the last animation he did in general, not just Dragon Ball, was in episode 46.
