Dragon Ball Movies different english dubs

Post by ATEMVEGETA » Wed Aug 24, 2016 6:21 am

As in my previous thread, I would like to discuss the many different Eng dubs released for the Dragon Ball (Z, GT) Movies. With "different dubs" I mean either different voice actors, or alternate lines, ot cut scenes, or even different background music. So here it goes:

Dragon Ball
*AB Groupe: DB Movies 1-3
*Harmony Gold: DB Movies: 1, 3
*BLT: DB Movie 1
*Speedy: DB Movies 2,3
*FUNimation: DB Movies 1-4 (Remastered DVDs)

Dragon Ball Z
*AB Groupe: DBZ Movies 1-9 + 2 Specials
*Creative Products Corporation: DBZ Movies: 5,6,10,11
*Saban: DBZ Movie 3 (split into 3 episodes)
*Prioneer: DBZ Movies 1-2 (edited) + DBZ Movies 1-3 (uncut)
*Speedy: DBZ Movies 1-13
*FUNimation: DBZ Movies 1-13 (Remastered DVDs)

Dragon Ball GT
*AB Groupe: DBGT Special
*FUNimation: DBGT Special (Remastered DVDs)

Are there more beside those? Am I forgeting something? FUNimation released all the movies in the Remastered DVDs right? DB Movie 4 was released by FUNimation's remastered DVDs only? :S

Nobody's been able to find Speedy dubs for Bardock and Trunks.

Dragon Ball movies 2-4 were released just as the Z movies were released years ago, and there was also a 3-pack boxset released in 2005. The only way prior to 2010 to watch movie 1 was the "Saga of Goku" set, but it was dub only and edited, just like the episodes. FUNimation went back and re-released them all in a pack, just like you said.

@RoarkVegeta
You mean that FUNimation released both an edited version and an uncut version of DB Movie 1? (They released also an uncut version of the DB episodes?)

There is not yet proof of that VCD actually containing a Speedy dub. The current theory is that it includes the Funimation dub, much like their VCD for DB Movie 1 had the BLT Productions dub. That may or may not be the case since it's only a theory, but until I see it appear on YouTube or elsewhere, I'm standing by my statement.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

The history of the first 13 episodes of DB episodes 1-13 and movie 1 is a crazy one, to be quite honest. A quick breakdown:

1995: Edited episodes of episodes 1-13 air on TV, dubbed by BLT (which I usually just call the Ocean group), music by Shuki Levy, etc, etc. FUNimation skipped to Z shortly thereafter, these were released on DVD in 2000, I would imagine earlier for VHS but I don't have the dates in front of me. These episodes and movie were sub-licensed by Kidmark/Trimark/Lionsgate Films. The "Saga of Goku" set that I mentioned earlier contains episodes 1-13 and movie 1, dub only, edited.

1998: Some people don't know this, but the first thing FUNimation released on their own was Dragon Ball movie 2 on VHS, using the more well-known cast from Season 3 onwards and came to DVD years later in that box-set I mentioned in my last post.

2001: FUNimation goes back and dubs episodes 14-153 and movies 3 and 4 of the original Dragon Ball. Slowly but surely, they come out on DVD, hybrid and uncut.

2004: Madman Entertainment in Australia releases their own Saga of Goku set, very similar to the other DB sets, in which has 1-13 dub/sub, but the old dub version of movie 1.

2009: A listing on Wal-mart pops up for Dragon Ball Season One, it eventually comes out, and the entire series is released this way, uncut, dub/sub.

2010: FUNimation releases movie 1 on it's own, dub/sub, uncut, redubbed.

It's a bit confusing, I know. And I may have gotten some info wrong there. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Information on BLT Productions is scarce, but from what i've gathered, they were some small production company that had nothing to do with Ocean. And the replacement music was done by a guy called Peter Berring (who presumably worked for BLT), not Levy, who only did music for shows Saban were affiliated with.

The BLT dub. Ok with this!

So, here we have FUNImation's Movie 2 uncut, right?.....

....and here the rest of the DB+Movies francise (except Movie 1 and episodes 1-13)! (Uncut)

As far as I know, Australian DVDs contain FUNimation's dub. Right?

Episodes 1-13 uncut! The rest are the same dub as the previous, correct?
RoarkVegeta wrote:2010: FUNimation releases movie 1 on it's own, dub/sub, uncut, redubbed.
And Movie 1 uncut as well!

@clutchins
You are right! History of Trunks must have FUNi's dub as well.

Shoot, you're right. I was thinking Levy did the original DB as well, my bad! Thanks.

Funimation's uncut dub of DB episodes 1-13 may have been completed in 2001, but just went unreleased until 2004 and could only be released in Australia at the time.

Between that time however, they went back at some point and reverted the name of Pilaf's dog minion from Xiao to Shuu to be consistant with the later episodes.

Funimation was not able to release these episodes uncut in the US until 2010, because of a rights-dispute with Lionsgate who had inherited them from a prior deal.

Are there any edited db episodes? (Except the first 13 ones released by BLT)?

Also, did FUNimation released Movies 1 edited as well, and then they released it uncut?

Yes, there were some edited VHS released if I recall correctly, those are very difficult to find now. They went from the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai up until the beginning of the 22nd and stopped, as VHS was essentially dead at that point.

The whole series aired edited on Toonami in the US. Funimation stopped releasing the edited version on VHS starting with the King Piccolo saga.

Movie 1 was only released edited in the US by Trimark. When their rights lapsed and Funimation got the license, they released the uncut version on DVD.

I have a Movie 1 with the Oolong- Master Roshi scene cut, and it's not the BLT Movie. Is this the Trimark version? How can I confirm it?

The Blt and Trimark version are one and the same. It's one of the only two dubs in any language that replaces the music of DB Movie 1 (the other is the Latino version of the Harmony Gold dub, due to the dubbers only having the English audio instead of the M&E track.

Four English dubs of DB 1 are known to exist, three using a script that is mostly the same. Harmony Gold, Funi/BLT, and Funi In-House on the one category, and AB Groupe/"Big Green" on the other. Of those four, only Funi/BLT has replacement music. If scenes have been cut, but there is no replacement audio, you aren't watching an official release, but probably a vhs recording of either big green or harmony gold dub.

I see! So besides the Gold Harmony and the AB dub only the BLT and the latest uncut FUNimation dub of Movie 1 exist!

I fixed the first post! Thanks you!
