I figured he was in those games because he was brand-spankin' new in the U.S. at the time.

I know he's one of the more popular movie villains, but he isn't exactly competing against a lot of Mr. Personalities.

He's an easy choice for movie villains in other media. I meant I don't see a lot of people saying, "Man, you know who's one of my favorite characters? Coola."
*Raises hand up* Congrats, you met one. Well, to be fair he's one of my favorite villains.

I'm with you. Next to Fusion Reborn, Cooler's Revenge (M5) is my favorite Z movie. And Cooler is my favorite movie villain besides Janemba

Well both characters have pretty great designs.

I liked Cooler more than Freeza as a kid since he appeared cooler than him (yes I went there). This is because of the original funimation English dub where Freeza had that chain smoking grandma voice while Cooler had a suave, mature sounding voice which made him sound more intimidating and in control than Freeza.

Also his transformation is great, I love the mask that he gets over him mouth, hell I even like his meta-cooler design and the fact that he actually proved to be a challenge for a super saiyan unlike Freeza.

As for Broly what he is is actually pretty unique and has never been done in the series since. Having a super saiyan as an enemy. All this time in Dragon Ball all the super saiyans we'd come across have been good guys, to have this turned on it's head and have an insane legendary super saiyan as an antagonist was a interesting to see and stuck with fans.

I remember being told that DBZ Movie 5 was pretty popular at the time. Coola was popular enough to get another movie otherwise Toei would have forgotten about him like they do with the other movie villains before him. He is also a alt for Freeza in the Japanese version of Budokai 2, so it's not like he was added in the recent video games at the time because of the US market.

I don't understand the Broly love. I always thought he was one of the worst movie villains. As far as big, buff DBZ movie characters go, I always preferred Bojack because at least he had a whole pirate crew with him.

Cooler is just better than Freeza in every way - more likable personality, better design, better dub voice. I also preferred Cooler's Armored Squadron to the Ginyu Force. Cooler's crew was more appealing because the had just enough camp to be funny but not so campy to the point where I couldn't take them seriously as enemies like was the case with the Ginyu Force. Sauza Blade is still one of the best techniques to come from a DBZ movie.

I respect Cooler for knowing instant transmission. It was a small but epic moment:

Goku: You like that one huh? Its called instant transmission.

Cooler: I know...its one of my favorite techniques!
Currently watching: My Hero Academia

Last watched: Akame Ga Kill, Hokuto No Ken, Hokuto No Ken 2, Hunter X Hunter

Thats a dub line most likely. (I say that as a dub fan)

But on topic I'm of the unpopular opinion that Freeza should've died on Namek, and then Cold instead should have went to Earth with Cooler which then plays out the same as in canon (being dispatched by Trunks and Goku after a good fight)

It was in the original language. It had different phrasing, but I recall it well enough. I dislike the movie itself, but that was one of the more memorable scenes.

Oh really? I always thought that line was a bit thrown in while watching the dub so I just thought it was wrong. My bad then!

Well, considering I rarely watch the movies with the English dub, I'm certain that was said. If I'm proven wrong, then I'll blame the English dub. :) If I had to make a guess, it went something like:
Coola: "What did you do?"
Goku: "Something I call Instantaneous Movement."
Coola: "What, you can do it, too?"
Goku: "!!"
That isn't exact by any stretch of the imagination, but you get the idea.

Where did Cooler learn instant transmission?

I presume he learned it the same way Goku did: The Yardrats taught him. I don't think it's too much of a stretch. The Ginyu Special Corps had a space pod set for Yardrat themselves. I think it's fair to assume that it was a well known planet, like Namek was, from that information.

Hm, you mean the Coola information? I'm merely theorizing with what we have. If you mean the space pod tidbit, well that's provided by Vegeta when Goku explains he doesn't know how he got to Yardrat. He just hit every button until it flew off to its preset destination.

Since they aren't canon anyway I've never watched the movies in original language. The Japanese one is cool too though and has the same end result of Cooler knowing IT.

It always bothered me noone else really tried to learn. I mean geeze you'd never be late again if nothing else.

Cooler is the only one of the movie villains that had an arc and a motivation beyond "I want to destroy everything just because I can." He wanted to avenge his brother not because he loved him but because he wanted to prove that he was better than him. Even though we never see them together we get a very clear idea of the type of relationship he had with Freeza and makes perfect sense given everything we know about this family.

He also had the chance to kill Baby Goku but didn't because he didn't want to clean up his brother's mess which ultimately was a fatal mistake on his part, something he realizes as he is dying(the first time). There's a poetic irony to his story which IMO makes him the most interesting of the movie villains(until Beerus at least).

Metal Cooler kind of sucks, though.
