More series based on Journey to the West!

Post by bkev » Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:52 am

Yup, apparently Journey to the West is a popular thing to copy in Japan.

Thoughts?? Sorry if this is common knowledge (spell?) or not dragonball-pertaining enough for this forum.

Yeah I've personally known about Saiyuki for a while. It's pretty good, their Son Goku reminds me of Dragon Ball's Goku at times (But most of the time not). But to be honest the feel of the show is entirely diffrent. Its got the comedy and the action, but its a bit more ofa sarcastic humor edge. The focus is more on the Monk Genjo Sanzo then anything else. If you're looking for more Journey to the West inspired stuff, its a great fun time. But if you're main interest is Dragon Ball related, you may want to reconsider or view a friends copy first.

I tried the first volume of this sometime last summer I think..it was alright but I didn't particularly care for it. The book did have loads of information when it came to the extras in the back though.
On hiatus.

The Goku from that series doesn't really look like the Goku from DBZ,neither does any of the other characters.
I think everybody should know that the Internet is serious business.

You didn't know about Saiyuki? I love that series, I think it's great.
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

Saiyuki, heard of it, seen it on televison but the only bad thing is, they left the story on a cliffhanger. And here is another series based on Journey to the West, I say this sticks closest to the story. I like this one.

There's a second season. Saiyuki Reload.

"Journey to the Extreme". Much love for that Manga. It's darker and more mature than Dragonball, for sure, and is much more driven by the 4 main characters than anything else. I've been really into it lately and I enjoy the series a lot, but it doesn't have the same universal appeal as Dragonball. I'd almost compare it to Final Fantasy VII but it doesn't reel you in like that either...

But yeah, neither Saiyuki nor Dragonball are close enough to the actual Journey to the West to have the characters resemble eachother. Saiyuki is probably closer though.

I heard about this. In fact, I have seen a few of the Saiyuki Reload episodes on my Digital Cable channel that sometimes airs anime shows. I kinda figured that it would be connected to Dragonball, since one of the main characters is "Son Goku".

I seen the whole thing, even Reload, and yes it ended in a cliffhanger.

Well, no one was saying this was recent. It was just something that we could discuss.
Last I checked DragonBall isn't recent and we still talk about it...

Good thing it's a trilogy. "Saiyuki Reload Gunlock" is already pretty far in. The Manga, however, is split up differently. Can be mildly confusing.

Ah my mistake. Sorry about that I haven't seen Reload so I assumed.

Journey to the West has been around for centuries. Its like the Grimm fairytales or the Hans Christian Anderson stories over here. Theyve been copied thousands of times.

I've really enjoyed the Saiyuki series so far, and it's going to be coming out for a while with the new Saiyuki Burial OVA coming out next month. It's a really awesome show and it's very character driven. It's different from a lot of the crap that's out there right now, in a good way. I recommend the manga though, because the anime does have some fillers that are pretty unbearable. Although, the second half of the first Saiyuki series is all completely filler, but it the story was written by Minekura, so it's not like your typical filler. It's actually better than some of the canon stuff. Check it out if you have the time.

Capcom's "SonSon" is based off of it as well.

Yeah, I remember her/him as well. That character had the cloud, pole, and even went oozaru as one of the specials. Unless I'm confusing this with something else, I'm pretty sure SonSon turned people into food and ate them.
