Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Gokuu in ep 56 was written really well. He was in character, showed concern when Vegeta got stabbed and went full power right from the get-go which indicates he is taking this seriously.
So, what do you guys think has serious Gokuu the Gokuu everyone has been waiting to see back? (NOTE: next ep is Toshio though so he might become a retard again)

Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Why can people not accept that Goku from Super is a mix of Dragonball & Dragonball Z ??
Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
We all hope he is. I definitely think he is. Remember guys we all complained about the complete lack of blood, the lack of tension and the lack of some dark stories. We got all three. Now we might also finally get Goku being completely serious.

Goku got pretty serious after Vegeta got stabbed and went down with little to no effort from Black, even his voice got serious when he told Trunks to "stand back" having low expectations from Goku in the NEP tho, since its the guy that enjoys making Goku a retard is the one handling it.

What else would he be?Lujin_16 wrote:Why can people not accept that Goku from Super is a mix of Dragonball & Dragonball Z ??
Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
I think he meant in terms of attitude or character traits. But to answer the Lujin's question, the reason people don't "accept" Goku in Super is because not everyone sees him as a mix of his traits from DB and Z like you do. I certainly don't. There are traits I believe have been there since that time in the franchise. They've just been overblown a bit to the point of severe annoyance, in my opinion. And to answer the original topic question, yes, it does seem that Gokuu will be getting a little bit serious in the next episode or so. Hopefully, we'll see the Nyoi-bo pop upLordCrumb wrote:What else would he be?Lujin_16 wrote:Why can people not accept that Goku from Super is a mix of Dragonball & Dragonball Z ??

To be honest I think Toei is driving the ship again. This is how they initially wrote the BOG movie until Toriyama completely changed it. Toei knows what sales as far as DBZ fans are concerned.emperior wrote:We all hope he is. I definitely think he is. Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Because people would like a Goku that is a continuation from Z, not someone who regressed, perhaps.Lujin_16 wrote:Why can people not accept that Goku from Super is a mix of Dragonball & Dragonball Z ??
Anyway, Goku was written well because it's King Ryu who wrote the episode. He's the only person on Super who can write anything worth a damn and, more importantly, the only one who can write Goku well.

Goku is always serious when he needs to be.
He was serious against Beerus both times, in ROF since he knew Freeza came back, against Frost and Hit in the tournament, against Zamasu, and both times against Black.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I disagree. The Pokemon guy who wrote most of the first episodes of the Future Trunks arc is really good. Also, Goku hasn't regress at all. Things just haven't been serious enough for Goku to take it seriously and we already know that Toriyama didn't like how Goku came out in the Z anime.Doctor. wrote:Because people would like a Goku that is a continuation from Z, not someone who regressed, perhaps.Lujin_16 wrote:Why can people not accept that Goku from Super is a mix of Dragonball & Dragonball Z ??

Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Not at all. Look back at Goku vs Frieza, or Goku confronting the androids, or the moment Cell snapped Piccolo's neck, or SSJ4 Goku vs Bebi, or that instance Cell eradicated that army, or any of the movies. That serious Goku has been sealed away forever.
Episode 56 still had a goofy Goku exhibiting silly facial expressions as Black turned SSJR, undercutting the drama by making dimwitted remarks to Black (though, to be fair, I can see me enjoying Schemmel acting this scene out since he'd sound less like a child), and smirking immediately after Vegeta was stabbed, instead of the cold hard frown he exhibited when he first met Perfect Cell or confronted Frieza as a SSJ.
Super's Goku can get serious, don't get me wrong, but there's always a restriction in the writing that keeps him from maintaining any level of anger for more than like 5 seconds. The emphasis is strongly on his lack of intelligence and light-hearted nature. It's like the show is scared of exploring other emotions of the character.

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super
Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
I'm actually with fadeddreams5 on this. I mean, story-wise, yes, Goku is serious.
But we haven't once seen the stoic indignation Toriyama trotted out for some of the manga's most iconic moments. No quiet rage like he displays when facing Piccolo Daimao, or arriving on the battlefield against Freeza, or as he requests Cell not kill anyone before the tournament and attempts to feel out his power. Even GT included these moments, some with nearly iconic imagery of their own.
It's a failure of the series that I think is completely fair to call out. At this point in the story, Goku has every reason to display the temperament he does in those scenes, but it hasn't been portrayed on screen yet. Not the end of the world, but it is a detriment to the character and our appreciation of the stakes.
Not that Goku needs to be angry all the time, but he used to have a bit more versatility, both in the hands of his original author and a previous era's Toei. And it led to some visual highlights.

Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Agreed. Also, let's not forget when Goku arrived in Saiyan arc to confront Vegeta and Nappa. The guy literally gave Nappa a blow for each and every one of his dead comrades. Seeing him seemingly not care at all about Future Bulma dying and the future being screwed cuts off any sympathy I had for him. If he doesn't care, why should we?fadeddreams5 wrote:Not at all. Re: Has Gokuu finally gotten serious?
Well Goku can be serious and funny.
However, he is no idiot.
He knows that when the stakes are not high, the doesn't have to act all serious, and he also enjoys a good fight.
With Beerus it was pretty obvious that Goku was having a "test of power" match and not a fight to the death.
With Frieza he was literally training.
In the tournament he explained how his life won't change if his planet goes to another universe.
This is the first serious arc for Goku. Black is no joke and certainly he is not a martial artist. He is a killer.
That doesn't mean that if Goku beats him, he will kill him. He will probably give him a second chance because that's his character.
Goku in general is immature. He is irresponsible and has his priorities (fight and train). However, he never let's people down.

I really fear ep 57 as if i'm not wrong (please correct me if i am), it'll be a Toshio episode, maybe there'll be no problem as it seems like it's going to be a fighting focused episode. For me as long as the right writer is working (like King Ryu), Goku's characterisation is good

But that is the Future. Aside from Trunks Goku has no ties there, he didn't know future Bulma, his Bulma is still here aive and well. It is hard to care for someone you didn't know.Bansho64 wrote:Agreed. Also, let's not forget when Goku arrived in Saiyan arc to confront Vegeta and Nappa. Maybe if in Toriyama's script Goku was serious while fighting, Toshio will have to change for once and not make Goku look like an idiot, i mean, in the preview he looks serious, if i didn't know that this was going to be a Toshio's episode, i would have thought that it would be King Ryu's.SansrivaaL wrote:Goku got pretty serious after Vegeta got stabbed and went down with little to no effort from Black, even his voice got serious when he told Trunks to "stand back" having low expectations from Goku in the NEP tho, since its the guy that enjoys making Goku a retard is the one handling it.
Come on Toshio, Goku is in danger, Trunks is in danger, Vegeta is in a terrible state and both Black and Zamasu are strong, DON'T YOU DARE TO FUCK IT UP!!!!!!!!!!

This isn't true, Goku displayed rage in the F arc, something he didn't do in the movie.Cipher wrote:But we haven't once seen the stoic indignation Toriyama trotted out for some of the manga's most iconic moments.
