Has the series ever had good guys who become bad?
The Dragonball franchise has several villains who wind up becoming good. Piccolo, Vegeta, Tenshinhan, Buu, 17 and 18, the Pilaf gang, etc.
But have we ever had someone who started as a good guy but then turned evil? I'm trying to think back to everything in the franchise history but I'm drawing a blank. Would you like to see this as a nice change of pace for the series?

Crane Hermit turned to assassination style martial arts after witnessing Mutaito die for his sealing of Piccolo Daimao. He and Turtle Hermit practiced for morally sound reasons before that tragedy. It perverted what he taught to his own students as well. They went on, primarily Tenshinhan, to stain the name of established philosophies for selfish motives.

Yeah, Zamasu.
Re: Has the series ever had good guys who become bad?
We have, but never in a really heart tugging or good way. Never saw Crane Hermit's decent, so we pretty much could have always taken him as bad. Vegeta never really fully settled into a good guy until around the conclusion of the Boo arc, so I don't feel Majin Vegeta really had that much of an impact. It's typical Vegeta really. Zamasu is really the closest to this, and even then I feel they didn't go all the way with it. Would have been amazing if he was introduced sooner, so we could slowly see his fall. I never really saw the good he has done, so I kinda just shrug at his change.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Zamasu may be the first for this kind of villain. Interesting.

Honestly, I think such a theme (good guys becoming bad) is too complex and/or mature for something like Dragon Ball to handle.
But, I have not seen newer stuff like Super and such, so something like that may have appeared already and I don't (yet) know.

It's not a complex theme at all, Dragon Ball handled it pretty well with Majin Vegeta even though Vegeta wasn't completely good yet.Bagginses wrote:Honestly, I think such a theme (good guys becoming bad) is too complex and/or mature for something like Dragon Ball to handle.

Not really, the idea of a good guy becoming a bad guy isn't complex, the way its executed in the story itself is what would make it complex or not. The series has had bad guys becoming good and it wasn't done in a complicated way it was done in a way that anyone could understand.Bagginses wrote:Honestly, I think such a theme (good guys becoming bad) is too complex and/or mature for something like Dragon Ball to handle.

Oh, so that was what the other user meant when he/she said ''Majin Vegeta''? They should have wrote only Vegeta then.Doctor. wrote:It's not a complex theme at all, Dragon Ball handled it pretty well with Majin Vegeta even though Vegeta wasn't completely good yet.Bagginses wrote:Honestly, I think such a theme (good guys becoming bad) is too complex and/or mature for something like Dragon Ball to handle.

Read above, I forgot about Vegeta turning Majin in the Buu arc.Deathbringer wrote:Not really, the idea of a good guy becoming a bad guy isn't complex, the way its executed in the story itself is what would make it complex or not. When I said complex in that post I don't mean like incomprehensible I just mean complex enough to the point where young children wouldn't properly understand, everything in Dragon Ball can be undrstood by children is what I mean. For an example of a good guy becoming a bad guy done in a fully expanded upon complex way look at Walter White from Breaking Bad or maybe Griffith from Berserk.ABED wrote:What do you consider complex?Deathbringer wrote:Not really, the idea of a good guy becoming a bad guy isn't complex, the way its executed in the story itself is what would make it complex or not. Zamasu was introduced as neutral. For me he doesn't fit the bill. If one's in the middle of the spectrum then it's just a case of leaning towards one side or the other. Going from good to bad and vice-versa, it's about radically changing one's morals and perspective.Doctor. wrote:Yeah, Zamasu.
Unless what OP means by good guys is the lack of evil acts, meaning any random citizen would fill the criteria, lacking a criminal record.

While the stories were complex, Walter's motivations were very simple - he was insecure and blamed everyone else for his shortcomings in life. When he thought he was going to die, it gave him an excuse to finally get what he felt he deserved out of life. When I said complex in that post I don't mean like incomprehensible I just mean complex enough to the point where young children wouldn't properly understand, everything in Dragon Ball can be undrstood by children is what I mean. Vegeta's motives are similarly simple - he's insecure. He wants to be the best and wants to lord it over everyone. He's a classist and Goku screws with that world view as well as Vegeta's self esteem. I like that Vegeta takes some steps forward and steps back. That feels very real to me.

It's filler, but the previous God of Earth was apparently a good guy yet was evil in the Garlic Jr. Saga.
