Whoa! They actually didn't even get the facts straight about the rumour itself! In all the claims I've ever read about AF's authenticity, never have the idiots purporting it said it was created by Toriyama. They just outdid those said idiots!

Something for Mike and Julian to muse over, from an I'm (this sorta relates to April Fool); screen names been censored.

B-kun: Wanna see something really random?

Monkey: yes

B-kun: (I showed her a pic of the Vegeta finger puppet.)
The syrup has been secured.
All your IHOP are belong to us.
The tuxedos have spoken of the tulips.

B-kun: From a DBZ April Fool.

Monkey: the tulips got a restraining order on the tuxedos

lmfao, that joke was great.... since I can't read Japanese or knew anything about what Japanese commercials looked like, I really thought it was real until I saw the "NOTE: THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE." line.

Kind of a late response here but I think yall did a great job, I loved it :D

Temporarily banned (for changing avatar to an even more ridiculously huge avatar after being told not to and having it removed, and for the grammar of a three year old). I'll decide when I feel like removing this ban. Please no talk of this particular ban in this thread, since it's dedicated to a specific section of the site.

About AF, though, any reliable news as to what started it? A doujinshi or coverpage image for a fanfic?

Oh my bad: the 00ber cool underground fanime that FUNimation doesn't want you to know about because they can't distribute it in South Carolina. Proof: JUST LOOK AT HOW LONG IT TOOK TO RELEASE "The Lost DBGT Episodes"!! I TOLD YOU IT'S A CONSPIRACY~~~~!

Late

Post by Ben Plante » Sat May 08, 2004 9:11 am

Once again, completely late to comment on this having just joined, but I lurved the prank. I knew, despite VegEX's claims of no prank, that I'd have something waiting for me. When I first saw the DBAF thing, I thought to myself, 'Come on... he's not even trying this year'. Then I continued reading, and watched the faux-commercial.

I just have two words. Absolute brilliance. Great job Mike. You most definitely tried very VERY hard this year. I might have bought it myself if I wasn't on guard. Great work. 8)

To increase the fascination within the drama, should the search for a new partner begin? If so, then head to the east. You will definitely meet the one who is waiting for you."

I don't see what the big deal about the commercial was myself. It was all scenes cropped from Z. I'll admit the pic almost had me for a second though (as I saw it a day late so I didn't make the connection. :P ). Of course I'm not saying a lot of work didn't go into or anything like that, just that it was useless on me.

**Sees a new AF fanart** OMG IT IS REAL!!!

The animation in the commercial had very little to do with the impact I was shooting for (unless you're familiar with Japanese commercials, in which case there's a little bit of parody going on, just in terms of style).

The commercial was all about the audio. I went crazy getting voice samples of all the seiyuu from scenes in other anime that had no background music or sound effects, and then attempting to place it all together to form a coherent-SOUNDING conversation (just in terms of tone and response time in the sentences). Also, I tried to match up just enough of what was actually being said with what I told you was being said; lining up just enough basic Japanese words would be enough to fool some of the wanna-be-otaku.

So yeah. That was the point and "deal" with the commercial ^^;;.

No no: I got that. I'm just saying that the visual aspect ended up making it a dead give away for a gag. A great gag, that resembled japanese commercials really well, but an obvious give away of a gag. All the 10 year-olds out there got caught because of the visual/audio mix like you wanted, but all the THREE year-olds should have been able to see the visual as a giveaway of this being a fun joke. But everybody was hooked into being 100% convinced there was a DBAF coming out until you updated a few days later saying it was a prank.

Meh. I'll just shut up. I can't seem to find a way of saying this without it coming off all "U STUUPUHD!1 IT SUXX0R3D~~~~11". :P

Something just occured to me after watching the "commercial" again. Supposedly future Trunks takes his time machine back to the past (present?). Why did you choose this for the plot, and did it have anything with Gen's hilariouse GT remark?

It was mostly the convenience of great sounding stereo audio tracks I could swipe from Utena for Trunks quotes. Combine that with brand-new artwork of Trunks from the flash game thingie on Jumpland, and it just worked out nicely.

How long are you going to cash in on this and keep the sticky and Quick Announcements link? It's mid-June, now. ^^

Okay, so it's mainly that I can't stand seeing so many stickies on a forum...
