I think with Viz, you have different translators & adaptors , so it's hard to live up to fans' expectations & what not cause of dealing with not only SJ properties, but a bunch of other titles as well. With Viz it's usually a hit or miss, depending on the translator &/or adaptor, or "assholes" as you may say.

At this point in the series, cussing seems to stop entirely, whereas "Bastard" "Ass" "Damn" and "Hell" were all used frequently before.
I've always wondered why they all just stood there almost 'shaking' their fists at him in a kind of "Why I oughta!" kind of way!

Makes sense now.

Damn, edits just piss me off. Companies have to stop worrying about parents reactions. American parents need to do some damn parenting as opposed to blaming things like Manga for the downfall of America's youth.

So kids are allowed to see Babidi get his head sliced off, Yamcha get a hole punched through him, and Freeza get cut in half, but they're not allowed to see a middle finger or innocent nudity?

I can *almost* understand the gun edits because kids can possibly have access to them (at least in the U.S.). Perhaps if parents actually did their jobs properly and weren't so quick to bitch about a damn comic book, we wouldn't have all these pointless edits.

Or that in Volume 1 they leave Goku's junk in, but in Volume 2 they edit out the Black rabbit guys lips. I guess little boy penis is okay but heaven forbid anyone see a "stereotype".

Speaking of junk: Having Goku's penis shown in DB and Gohan's removed in DBZ...

Viz' manga edits are also only in some of the SJ line and Zatch Bell. They didn't add bras to girl Ranma and in Maisson Ikkoku, they left in a couple knocking boots.

True story: I found out that my library has manga that you can take out. The first book that I saw was DragonBall vol. 4. So I picked it up, read through it and got up to Namu's fight against that woman. As you know, he is about to hit her and she pretends that she's afraid and lands a few cheap shots. Namu gets serious and hits her, ending the match.

Something missing? Yeah! Unless I'm going crazy, they removed the pages where the woman is stripping (they actually ripped out two pages). The moral of this story is that the edits can be much worse and no, I wasn't looking forward to that scene in particular..

It was pretty much a miss appearently. Viz has the ability to release an unedited version yet they refuse to. Not a very good way to appeal to fans. So yes they're pretty much being assholes about it. They see the potential the younger audience has for the series and they edit it for more money. Its not the fact that they edit it that pisses me off its the fact that they don't give an unedited version. I don't want to sound mean about it but basically Viz is now saying fuck the fans, so I say fuck them.

There might actaully be more Viz edits in rereleases then we think. For instance, in the reprint of volume one of Dragon Ball, they change Bulma's use of the word "panties" to "undies". So it's imoral to say panties, but showing a girl's naked ass is okay? I don't know about other volumes, because it's the only one I have both versions of.

This thread is making me really hate my two volumes of manga I just bought.

Why must every release of anything Dragonball ever have to fucked up in some ridiculous way that just seems to make no sense?? Or something like that... I'm tired...

Haha, RAW Kanzenban of Dragonball + good scanlators = non half-assed Dragonball manga release! I kinda know Japanese and have the Kanzenban... (^_~)

Which ones did you get? Besides, if you got the earlier bigger ones with the 13up label on it, they're ok. The changes are so minor, if you never saw the Japanese versions, you'd never know. Besides, some of them are just minor translation differences that some people disagree on.

I got Volume 1 for both Dragonball and Dragonball Z. And they're the latest releases, with the "White Box" logo's on the spine.

It was a Barnes and Noble, the first one I've seen since some time last summer, and I saw the manga section and just completely forgot the whole spine logo issue. I don't think they had the bigger volumes though; I guess those would be too old?

Weird it all is... Viz is a funny one.
I think the "half-translation" is the weird one...

The only way for you to win is to be completely fluent in Japanese, own the dragonboxes, and both the tankoubon and the Kanzenban, or be Akira Toriyama himself.. What are wrong with your releases again? The Barnes and Noble near me have the unedited versions..I think.

I forgot to mention in my last post, they also put bubbles while Bulma's in the shower to cover up Bulma's "naughty parts".

If you're referring to her frontal parts, that's covered unedited too.
